NEW YORK TIMES : 1971 RELEASE OF DR. BERNARD FINCH

 Aug. 18, 1971

Excerpt:  SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 17 (AP) — Dr. R. 13ernard Finch was ordered released on pa role today, from a life term In the slaying of his wife. Approached about jobs in Missouri, Nebraska and Maryland. The Missouri offer was from a small rural community that wanted him to operate a small hospital and clinic.

His sweetheart at the time of the slaying Carole Tregoff, was paroled in 1969 from the same sentence.

The eight-member California Adult Authority granted the once-wealthy Finch parole in his second bid for freedom since he entered prison 10 years after three sensational trials.  he will be released December 5.

Excerpt: Henry Kerr, chairman of the Adult Authority Board, said that Finch had been approached about jobs in Missouri, Nebraska, and Maryland. The Missouri offer was from a small rural community that wanted him to operate a small hospital and clinic.

Finch's medical license was revoked in California. It can be reinstated by another state, Mr. Kerr said...

NATHANIEL BRANDEN - BARBARA BRANDEN - FRANK O'CONNOR OBITUARIES

NY TIMES OBIT FOR NATHANIEL  2014: entitled Nathaniel Branden, a Partner in Love and Business with Ayn Rand, Dies at 84, I think that's a rather brave title.

As a note Branden was married four times.

Ayn Rand exited him from her will, and she said she would destroy him.  She said she would stop the publication of his boo, The Psychology of Self Esteem.  In 1968 she let it be known that she had broken with Nathaniel. Barbara, Nathaniel's wife began to think that Ayn's mental health was deteriorating.  Rand accused of both Barbara and Nathaniel

NY TIMES OBIT FOR BARBARA 2013 : entitled Barbara Branden, Biographer of Ayne Rand, Dies at 84.

Excerpt:  Ms. Branden and her former husband, Nathaniel Branden, were at the center of Ms. Rand's inner circle during its heyday in the 1950's and '60s. a following that included future scholars and economists, most notably Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, who went on to shape the conservative Republican and libertarian movements.

NEW YORK TIME OBIT FOR FRANK 1979 : entitled Charles Francis O'Connor, Artist, Husband of Ayn Rand

Excerpt: Every hero was modeled after him," Miss Rand said.  "I sometimes took an entire monologue from him and slipped it into my book.  When I couldn't think of a title for one of my novels, he did.  He told the whole story in two words.:  Mr. O'Connor's two word title was "Atlas Shrugged."

NEW YORK TIMES OBIT FOR AYN 1982

Excerpt: Miss Rand was perhaps best known for her novels "The Fountainhead" of 1943, for which she wrote the screenplay when it was turned into a movie with Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal, and "Atlas Shrugged," published in 1957.  From the 1960's on, she increasingly devoted herself to expouinding her views more directly, in such books as "The Virtue of Selfishness" (1965) and "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal." (1966)

She also served as editor of The Objectivist, a monthly journal, from 1962-1971 and wrote The Ayn Rand Letter from 1971-1976.  Her philosophy of objectivism holds that only individual ability and effort account for real achievement and that laissez-faire capitalism provides the optimal environment for talent.  her view of selfishness as a virtue and altruism as a vice as a reversal of the traditional Judeo-Christian ethic.

Though the posts this month have focused on Lady Idina Sackville's sexuality, which she expressed without regards to the vows of traditional marriage, and her participation in the Happy Valley Set in the Highlands of Kenya in the 1920's - 1940's, perhaps the fact that she was THE LIFE OF THE PARTY has been neglected. This article has as a picture a copy of one of the articles that made the papers, in which her scandalous life was followed, "Love Failures of the Countess." as well as photos of her sons and some of the Happy Valley Set. DELPHINE IS TRIUMPHANT and HAS A FIRST MEETING WITH EMERITUS KING ALBERT II and QUEEN PAO

Delphine Boel is now PRINCESS DELPHINE of BELGIUM (Delphine Michele Anne Marie Ghislaine de Saxe-Cobourg)  Because of her mother's rank in the aristocracy of Belgium she was already considered to be of nobility.  The article linked to below is about all being forgiven after years of denial and court battle.

Her daughter is now Princess Josephine and her son is now Prince Oscar.

A statement jointly issued by Princess Delphine, King Albert II, 86, and Queen Paola, 83, said their meeting had opened a new chapter "full of emotion, understanding and , also, hope."

I note that Delphine, who was born in 1968, was seventeen when her mother told her that King Albert II was her birth father.  Until then her mother told her that he was a best friend.

PATRICIA KENNEALY MORRISON HAS MOVED ON INTO THE NEXT WORLD

Excerpt: In the late 1960's, originally as Patricia Kenely (she later changed the spelling of her last name and, in 1979 added Morrison), she was a writer for and then editor of Jazz & Pop, a small but well-regarded magazine. She interviewed Morrison in 1969, and when they shook hands there was "a visible shower of bright blue sparks flying in all directions," she wrote in a 1992 memoir, "Strange Days" My Life With and Without Jim Morrison."  They soon became romantically involved.

Ms. Kennealy-Morrison practiced Celtic paganism; on her Facebook page she described herself as "Author, ex-rock critic, Dame Templar, Celtic witch, ex-go-go dancer, Lizard Queen, Not in that order." ("Lizard Queen" was a reference to a line from a Jim Morrison poem, in which he wrote, "I am the Lizard King.") In 1970 she and Morrison exchanged vows in a "handfasting ceremony" that involved drops of their own blood.

 

ROLLING STONE OBIT FOR PATRICIA KENNEALY MORRISON

Excerpt:  Patricia Kennealy-Morrison - the one-time rock journalist and partner of Doors singer Jim Morrison - died July 23rd at the age of 75.

"To all of you who have supported our beloved Lizard Queen, I wanted to let you know that she passed this morning," Kennealy-Morrison's Lizard Queen Press - the company she founded to release her fiction work - wrote on Facebook at the time. "To say we are all reeling from the news is an understatement. We will miss our friend very, very much. She was a beautiful soul, a talented writer, and a loving and wonderful friend."

Missy here:  The love triangle of Doors singer and poet Jim Morrison with Patricia Kennealy and Pamela Courson was featured here at Mistress Manifesto BlogSpot and remains one of the most popular posts for the month March 2014.

Although there is reason to believe Morrison had other women in his life through these relationships, the situation was and is confused because while PAMELA called herself his wife, he didn't always live with her, preferring a motel room at times even when in Los Angeles - the same city, though he financially supported her. But there was no legal marriage. And with PATRICIA, Morrison participated in a Pagan Hand Fasting ceremony, which is also not a legal marriage - or was not at that time and place. (Today in California such ceremonies followed by a civil marriage or registration are.) This ceremony which is the tradition in her religion was very important to Patricia. She was financially independent of Morrison.  

When he died in Paris, Pamela was there. Her family declared her his wife and went after his estate which is something else which I think might be questionable today with so many people experimenting with living together without legal marriage. At the time far fewer people did so and Pamela's family were almost, in my opinion, redeeming her reputation by declaring her Jim's common law wife. Today living together for seven straight years is usually considered a common law marriage, with faithfulness and loyalty known in the community. 

The controversy is still in play, which is one of the reasons my posts about Patricia and Pamela are so popular.  So much so that at one point I actually took the whole month done, hoping other deserving Mistresses would get hits instead.

The Barbizon Hotel was the foundation for independent life of many women who came to New York to start careers in writing, editing, modeling and acting, beginning in the Flapper era and continuing into the 1980s. CAROLE MALLORY ON MISTRESSES IN THE PRESS TODAY

EXCERPT: “I don't like the way mistresses are being maligned in the press today,” said Carole Mallory, her voice indignant as she looked up from her salad at Gallagher’s Steak House on West 52nd Street, where she and Norman Mailer frequently dined during their eight-year affair that began in 1983. At the time, Mr. Mailer was married to his sixth wife, Norris Church Mailer; Ms. Mallory’s affair with the writer is the subject of her new book, “Loving Mailer.”

Ms. Mallory was talking about Tiger Woods’s mistresses, and how they have been portrayed as oversexed sirens who lured the married sports idol onto the rocks of deceit. “You have to understand with these famous men, they go after women, yet the press likes to make it appear that the women went after him,” said Ms. Mallory, 68, who might be considered an authority on the subject.

A note by Missy: I personally don't think of mistresses as affairs and so I don't know that any of the women that the press incorrectly called mistresses that he was involved with actually were.  Therefore my own use of the word would probably not agree with Carole Mallory's use!  Also in her book she speaks of a 9 year relationship and the author of this article writes an 8 year affair.

Corbett, an editor said,"I agree that “mistress” has a somewhat old-fashioned tone to it that isn’t ideal (though I don’t accept the argument that it necessarily implies a financial arrangement; it doesn’t. First definition from American Heritage: “A woman who has a continuing sexual relationship with a man who is married to someone else.”

Missy here!  I'm editing the long piece that I had posted in Pages that discusses what I think about the use of the term.  Let's just say here briefly that I do not think adultery is necessary to the definition, and I do think that the Classic Mistress is Kept - or at least well cared for beyond her own earnings, but that most women who are Mistresses today do have or earn some of their own income - and should!

It begins "Ruth Kligman, an abstract painter who for decades seemed to know everyone and be everywhere in the art world and who was the lone survivor of the 1956 car crash that killed Jackson Pollock, her lover at the time, died Monday at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was 80 and lived in Manhattan..."


Ruth was an artist herself, and I find that women in the arts are never as well represented in galleries or museums as men artists. I have met a number of men with aspirations in the arts and music who have been or are kept, at least for a time. They may not be married, their keeper may not be married, but they are financed, introduced to people who can help them, and generally supported in other ways. None of these men has seemed to be the least bit apologetic or insecure. They seem to feel that their talent deserves support. - Missy
