  Virginia's father worked for Mar-a-Lago and got her an interview and introduced her to Donald Trump himself. Trump asked her if she babysat and got her some work with nearby residents who had children. Her day job at the luxe resort was at the spa where professional massage therapists worked. Though she was not in the massage therapy rooms to witness, this lead to her interest in becoming a massage therapist herself. As she wrote on page 62, "For the first time in my life, I allowed a flicker of hope to build inside me."

 "Then, one steaming hot day some weeks before my seventeenth birthday, I was walking toward the Mar-a-Lago spa, on my way to work, when a car slowed behind me. I wish I could say that I sensed that something evil was tracking me, but as I headed into the building I had no inkling of the danger I was in." ...

In the car following Virginia was Ghislaine Maxwell, who worked with Jeffrey Epstein, and her driver.

" ...this was an apex predator - as greedy and demanding on the inside as she appeared to be beautiful, posed, and self assured on the outside. Again, I wish I could say that I saw through Maxwell's polished facade - that, like a horse, I intuited the immense threat she posed to me.  Instead my first impression of Maxwell was the same one I formed when I greeted any well-heeled Mar-a-Lago guest. I'd be lucky, I thought, if I could grow up to be anything like her. "

Virginia was reading a library book on massage while at a reception desk when Ghislaine showed up.

Excerpt page 67 : "Suddenly I look up from my book to see a striking woman with short dark hair striding toward me.

"Hello," the woman says warmly. She looks to be in her late thirties, and her British accept reminds me of Mary Poppins. I couldn't tell you which designers she's wearing, but I bet her purse cost more than my dad's truck. The woman extends her manicured hand for me to shake ..."

Maxwell convinced Virginia that she should come meet a wealthy man - a math genius -a  man who she says likes to "help people" and who lives a couple miles away - that very night. Virginia said she had to get her father's permission first and in the end, her father drove her over for the interview, with Ghislaine assuring her father that they would get Jenna, as Virginia was then called, home safe. (!) The interview, which turned out to be a demonstration by Ghislaine on how to massage Jeffrey, included him questioning her about her sexual experience and ended with unexpected sexual encounter in which both Ghislaine and Jeffrey Epstein were sexual with Virginia. She complied.

Excerpt page 73 : "A familiar emptiness flooded me. Just minutes before, I had arrived at Epstein's mansion hoping that I was turning a corner. Now I knew I was right back where I'd worked so hard not to be. How many times had I put my faith in someone, only to be hurt and humiliated. But this time the disappointment was excruciating. I blamed myself. "Is sex all anyone will ever want from me?" a voice inside me shrieked, as another harsher voice chided: "Yes, you idiot. You knew that already." I tasted the tang of adrenaline in my mouth, and I could feel my brain begin to shut down. My body couldn't escape from this room, but my mind couldn't bear to stay, so it put me on a kind of autopilot" submissive and determined to survive.

Excerpt page 82 ; ..."How about you quit your job at Mar-a-Lago," he said, :and work for me full time?" Unsure what to say, I admitted I was worn out from pulling double shifts each day - the first at the spa - the second at El Brillo Way. Epstein nodded. He wanted to make things easier on me, he said.  But he had a few conditions. As his employee, I would be at his beck and call, day and night. No exceptions. When he said, "Jump" my response would have to be, "How high?"

Virginia would quit her spa job and high school to work for Epstein. He gave her money, cash, after she had given service. He also let her know that he had a photo of her younger brother and where he went to school. The threat was that if she told anyone what went on - if she went to the authorities or betrayed Jeffrey, her younger brother would be hurt.

OPINION BY MISSY : I TANGLE WITH THE TERMINOLOGY : DEFINING MISTRESS

Through my Coronavirus-19 shut down experience, I've spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos and reading articles on the internet surround the issue of legal prostitution. The name ALICE LITTLE kept coming up as she has reportedly in recent years been the highest earning prostitute known. Little's earnings are reflected in massive tax payments because she is a legal prostitute in the state of Nevada. She hints at the ownership of horses, investment property, and paying so much in taxes that she's sort of funding the county. It's said that Alice Little has made millions. She is a well spoken and intelligent woman who also has been an advocate for prostitution remaining legal in Nevada. She has sued to reopen the brothels closed due to Covid.

As Alice Little, who is four foot eight or nine inches tall and likely uses the stage name Alice Little, states, she is sometimes thought of or called a courtesan, but the wording that the state of Nevada uses on the licensing is prostitute.  I watched a number of her videos in which she exhibits great enthusiasm for her profession as well as "sex worker" knowledge, some of which she openly shares in an attempt to show how friendly she is, tease potential customers, and normalize prostitution. In one of the videos, which seemed to be a recording of a talk show in which she was the guest and the host or moderator asked a number of good questions, Alice said the difference between a Mistress and a Courtesan is that a Courtesan "services" many but a Mistress only "services" one person.  

Ouch!  I do not agree with her definition.

One of the things we do here at Mistress Manifesto BlogSpot is consider definitions as we try to understand what being a Mistress means in the 21st Century.  Although often the word Kept is used for men and women who do not earn their own money, that would also define stay at home wives and husbands - those who do and do not have children - who are dependent on someone else for food, shelter, clothing, and a whole lot more.  I have to say that by suggesting that a Mistress is "servicing" a man, that the relationship is just another way a man pays for sex, turned me off and is inaccurate.

Reviewing the many Mistresses, Courtesans, and others profiled here at Mistress Manifesto BlogSpot, I can say there is plenty of evidence that there is a difference between them and Prostitutes. So maybe it's just Alice Little's prostitute mentality and she doesn't see that Mistresses have relationships with men they are not married to and that Courtesan's may too, but Mistresses choose their relationships. 

Relationships.

Basically, I agree with Nevada definition of Alice and her cohorts who live in brothels awaiting customers who pay for sex as prostitutes. I think applying the Courtesan label to herself is Alice's attempt to up her reputation because she charges so much and might be "choosing" only those customers who can afford her negotiated fees.

Earlier in this blog, I suggested that Courtesan describes a woman who, be it that she has one or many, chooses who she will have in her life, be it pure romance or just sex, or something inclusive of both. She has men vying for her company and she does well enough to reject those she is not interested in. Historically Courtesans want the rich life but that doesn't stop them from loving who they love or sharing their riches, including sometimes supporting lovers. Some spurn men who can't afford gifts such as jewelry, fine art, and houses but that used to be saving for a rainy day because there was no retirement. There wasn't a menu of "parties" with rates listed. Nor is the Courtesan hidden away in a bordello. She is out and about with her friends and companions.

Genuinely positive and warm feelings, even love, can exist between a Courtesan and her favorites. That's why Pamela Digby Churchill Harriman, was called The Courtesan of the Century. For many years before she married, she made it her life's work to make wonderful homes for her men, entertaining, dressing beautifully and being an interesting companion, and she stayed friendly with them even as they were breaking with her. This lifelong habit of having a generous spirit resulted in her becoming a fund raiser for the Democratic party. I would never confuse Pamela with a prostitute.

Let's ask these questions: Is a legal wife just "servicing" her husband, so she'll have a man father her children, live with her, maybe have difficulty getting out of a relationship with her, and support her financially?  

Does a woman who is living in a polygamous lifestyle and sharing a man knowingly with other women and who is willing to have as many children as is possible such as the Sister Wives  just "servicing" him?

I realize that most wives today also earn income, and today's Mistresses usually also earn some - or all - of their own income at regular jobs or have careers, but until fairly recently, certainly in the last couple centuries, most wives were totally dependent on their husbands for the financial support. To this day some women are resistant to marriage if a man cannot or will not do this for them. Women who were not married were vulnerable to being preyed upon.

Another "test" of a relationship is this: Would Alice Little or any of the other women who work at the legal brothel still arrange to see a man if they knew they would not be paid?  What if he paid many times and then showed up broke? My guess is no.

I can't ask "What if he pays for companionship and does not have sex?" because that does happen, however, the most modern of services now offered on a prostitute's menu is "the girlfriend experience." This is the paid for time the prostitute spends on a "date" such as going out to dinner, or as Alice Little says, seeing the sights, even going into Vegas (where prostitution is illegal), having fun and getting to know one another better. In my opinion the "Girlfriend Experience" is probably the most time consuming and expensive fantasy experience a customer can buy and much easier on the prostitute though she has to be an excellent actress to offer all that to one stranger after another. The so called Girlfriend Experience further blurs the line between what is or is not a relationship and is closer to the Escort Experience, which also, it is said, may not result in sexuality each and every time, but in which the escort is also said to provide companionship. Question again is if the woman who got paid by the hour, day, weekend, or week as an Escort or a Girlfriend will see that person if no money is paid.

Now flip this around and look at dating for women who expect not to have sex or feel at all obligated to have sex with someone, just because he paid for a movie or dinner or some other activity. He probably did pay because he did the asking and he has a higher income: more women with higher incomes are paying for dates as well as Keeping men. 

Dating one or several men, just taking one's time to get the know someone before having a serious commitment and waiting until then is not just Old Fashioned. It's recommended by many dating coaches as the best way to find someone to marry.

No one I know wants to accept a date, especially when she has just met someone, if she thinks or she feels sex with the man will be obligatory payment for a night out. No one I know wants to have a flirtation or simply be curious about another person and accept an invitation to meet with that person socially if they think or feel sex will be expected as payment. I know women who are in love with men who have, from the start, paid for every date but are not yet sexual with them.

I'm with the State of Nevada. When you go to a brothel, which is a place to have sex, legal or not, you are paying for sex with a prostitute, a woman who has sex with many men and/or women for payment, and that is the point, though for one reason or another sex may not happen.

One more thing: one of Alice Little's videos suggests that the fantasy of being with three uniformed "school girls" is certainly possible at the brothel. I don't know for how many more years she will appear youthful enough to play at being a schoolgirl. Because she is so short and has a girl-next-door face it's easy to imagine her in a school girl uniform.  I'm not comfortable that this pedophile's fantasy may be normalizing pedophilia.

Does this kind of "party" embolden a pedophile?

VALTESSE'S COURTESAN'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS MEN and SEX

I listened to Catherine Hewitt's book as an audio book
right on my cell phone, downloaded with Overdrive.

Chapter 6 of The Mistress of Paris, gives a very detailed account of the gradations of sex work in France that so very many women relied upon to support themselves and their families. 

Poverty was the qualification.  In this era without the contraception and safe sex options that we have today, illegitimate children were also common, and yet, having an illegitimate child could disqualify a woman from marriage. Sexual harassment was also common. And so our Mistress of the Month, Courtesan Valtesse de la Bigne, decided that if she was going to be a whore, she would become the best of them, and here is what we learn:

Though said to have hardened her heart early after the disappointment of having fallen in love and given birth to two daughters with a man who would not marry her, Valtesse, who had been prostituting herself since a teenager, put men into three categories.

The first category was the ESCORT.  The escort was a man who she could go out with, be seen with, enjoy herself with, but she did not allow herself to have sex with him or him to have sex with her.  (I wonder if some of these men were gay.  I also wonder how firm she was about allowing a man who was her escort to advance to being her lover!)

The second category was the men who PAID.  Be it the price for an hour, a night, a weekend, or perhaps a trade of gifts, that included jewelry, clothing, objects of art, paintings, houses, hotels, or a country estate crammed with valuables, she was careful to always have others waiting for a chance to be her everything when she was through with a man or he was through with her.

The third category may surprise some of you.  These were the lovers she took who were not rich men, men she was attracted to, by her CHOICE.  Some had some money, some did not, but offered her opportunities or introductions in art, literature, and diplomacy. Some she just liked

According to the book she was also ready to have sex at all times and could have sex with no foreplay.  (Though to me this seems more the forte of the street prostitute.  Why else spend a fortune on a bed (which is now in a museum) and to set the stage for seduction?)

She probably lost count of the men she had been sexual with. 

By maintaining these categories, Valtesse had friendships of her own choosing and it could be said the majority of the men in her life fell into the first or third.

COMTESSE VALTESSE DE LA BIGNE : 18th CENTURY PARISIAN SEX WORKER to COURTESAN to MISTRESS

She believed men were not to be relied upon... Catherine Hewitt's book is a dazzling biography with descriptive details that help the reader imagine...

Our Mistress of the Month is Comtesse Valtesse de la Bigne (1848-1910), a woman of 19th century France who it could be said slept her way up - intelligently.  A strength of author Catherine Hewitt's book is the way she clearly explains the reality of sex work as a common option for women alone in the world, especially a woman with a child ; i.e. her mother turned to sex work too.  Within the culture, as is the case now, there were those who started at the bottom and worked their way up, though perhaps very few made it into Mistresshood (generally, dedicated to one man) and so Valtesse was exceptional, beginning with her bright blue eyed - red haired beauty, but also because she was an astute observer and made a point of learning how those who were successful did it.  She knew she would have to rise quickly and cover her tracks.

Hewitt gives us a historical perspective of that time and place, citified Paris, France, when sex work was extremely common.  The girl and her mother from Normandy blended into the impoverished culture of women alone with limited prospects of employment because they were women. She also ads to our understanding when we try to define Mistress versus Courtesan versus Sex Worker.  We can talk forever about how much choice is involved in each and every circumstance.  (Perhaps the only legal prostitution option currently in the United States is the legal brothels of Nevada and so there is the most  choice?)

Make no mistake about it, Valtesse took a lot of abuse early on, participated in acts she would rather forget, but somehow endured it, and became calculating and cold hearted in her need to never experience that level of poverty again and to not let her feelings get in the way.  As she rose she had more say about who she would or would not have sex with. Her mother also understood when her teenage daughter brought men home to have sex for money, though maintaining one's beauty, having fine jewelry and clothing to wear, being taken out and being seen in restaurants and theaters (from stage to audience), and setting aside money for one's future, were all part of an ambitious plan to never look back.

Evidence of her success includes being the subject of a painting by Edouard Manet and being the inspiration for the writer Emile Zola who wrote the novel Nana about her, which was considered scandalous.  She was rumored to have seduced the future King Edward VII and Napoleon III.  She eventually managed to pass herself off as a Comtesse - nobility.  The secret that the title of this book eludes to is her background.  Valtesse knew how to spin the P.R. and market herself, and remained somehow elusive and mysterious.  It was up to the author to tell her tale authentically.

In 1864 the teenager found herself in love and pregnant.  She would have two daughters, one born unwell who would not live into adulthood, and the other who she paid her mother to raise.  That she was a mother was a closely held secret until, at a time when she was at the height of her popularity and beginning to be open with her opinions, counter criticisms, and to write her own story, she learned that her own mother, who had brought six children into the world without marriage, might be raising her daughter to begin the life of a prostitute.  Like some other extremely wealthy courtesans, Valtesse did not want her daughter to follow her into the business.  A dramatic court case kept the French public enthralled with daily coverage in the newspapers.

Valtesse went through a number of wealthy men who were so crazy about her that some of them were rumored to be ruined financially.  She acquired more than jewels and fine dresses, but great wealth.

Her first man who is credited with raising her up out of the low level sex work was a married theatre owner named Offenbach, a man with five children and a devotion to his wife, who put her on stage. During this period it was Courtesan Cora Pearl (our Mistress of the Month in July 2012, called The English Rose of Paris) who she wanted to emulate.  But when War broke out Valtesse was one of those who fled Paris in 1870 for Nice.  By the time she returned to Paris she and Cora Pearl were side by side. Valtesse knew that being a courtesan offered her the ultimate independence a woman of her time and place could achieve but to persevere she needed to not ignore society, but become part of it. 

Done with the theatre owner and any hopes of a vibrant career on the stage, her first truly incredibly wealthy man was a Polish Prince Lubormirsky.

Lubormirsky owned great estates in Poland, Austria, and France. He was so generous to her that some speculated she left him broke - or well at least ended his cash flow.  They were public as a couple and in the newspapers.  But, one thing we must admire about this woman is that she knew when she needed to move on, be it that a man was running out of money or that he no longer found her fascinating, and she did so to an American General who was living in France.  She'd always had a thing for men in military uniforms. He spent very approximately (the conversion to American dollars goes from French money to British first) half a million dollars in six months.  He put an apartment in her name.  (I know some of you who are reading this can only wish for that!)  But she thought, what just an apartment?  By 1873 she had moved on to another Polish Prince.  At the time the police estimated that Valtesse had acquired thus far in her career about 3 million English pounds.  Now associating with nobility, this was when she changed her name to seem even more aristocratic.  After the war people weren't checking other people's credentials quite so much.  She said she was from an ancient noble family of Normandy.  And about this time, she began to wear clothes that gave her a masculine effect to balls.

It was the Prince de Sagan who provided her money to have a country house.  Comtesse Valtesse de la Bigne, may have come from nothing and nowhere, but her house had only the finest in furniture and art.  She became an art collector and had affairs with painters.  She was a voracious reader and began to also associate with literary authors.  The book "Nana" was based on her and everyone knew it, even though the author said otherwise, and became a best stller.  She was angry with him and countered it with her own book about herself.

As for sex, stick with me this month, as I will reiterate what I learned from reading this book about this courtesans' attitude about sex - and men.  Just in case  you want to follow in her footsteps!
