A PERFECT 14 is a captivating film.
It focuses on plus size models and the one's profiled and followed a bit are on strong career paths.
First, what does it take to be a "plus size" model? The very word implies fat, and indeed some plus size models are by just about anyone's perception fat, with extra folds of skin. But these successful models simply look like most of us. We are not hanger thin. See a normal woman next to a hanger thin one and you can see the difference. Then you'll say, isn't that other women dangerous skinny?
What's really going on in fashion?
Are designers, male or female, simply unable to create clothing that looks great on humans who are not hanger thin?
Must we really contort ourselves in order to wear clothing? Become ill? Loose our perceptions of reality when we look in a mirror?
Elly Mayday was a plus size model from Canada who eventually died of ovarian cancer at the age of 30 because she was so young when she started having stomach pain (stage 3) that she was misdiagnosed for years. Holding to her dream with ambition she managed to model though she took cancer treatments and eventually had some extreme surgery. So her story is especially touching.
Another model, Kerosene Deluxe, who is profiled here is an alternative model. She is not only a big lady, she is a tattooed and pierced one. She also comes with a unique life story as she was born to a woman who had been a legal prostitute in Europe who married a man who had been a steady customer Europe.
Then there's the Perfect Sized 4 model who is traveling the world, Laura Wells, perhaps the most successful profiled. She is healthy. She is not overly fat - no belly - nor is she overly muscled.
If you're questioning why you are always dieting to loose or maintain weight so that you'll "look good" you might find some inspiration from these models. You might also decide to go ahead and be a model yourself.

YOUR WISH LIST AND YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS ARE NOT SO DIFFERENT
I decided to go just get into the Holiday Season this month and not give it over to a Mistress or Mantress of the month.
Of course I've been considering who I'll be featuring in the coming year!
Oh, I do hope I'll surprise you!
What a year it's been and I do so want to get cozy. I feel like staying indoors and in bed to read good books and watch some movies I've missed. I feel like filling my slow cooker with lots of veggies and some meat - just enough - and making a stew to come home to (have you ever tried pouring a can of beer into a slow cooker stew?), then go out, take a long walk alone in my coat, without money - just an ID and a few bucks in my pocket. Maybe I'll go shopping before the hustle bustle. I feel like maybe a yoga class and later a long hot soak in the tub with some beautiful perfumed bath salts.
I'm getting ready for the New Year too!
I was going through my closet the other day, and putting some things I no longer wear in bags to be donated to charity.
Do you remember when you were a teenager and so sensitive to all the fads? Of course you didn't think of them as fads! You weren't posing! Whatever it was - Preppie - Grunge - Punk - Starlet - you actually were or aspiring to be exactly what your clothing said about you. The music you listened to and the people you dated were part of that time in your life.
Then the years passed, you matured, and you found that there were some things - clothes - people - that you gave away, and yet there are some things - people - that remain classic and dear to you. Finding your own style which will endure with you for years, maybe a favorite hair cut that plays up your best features, a color of lipstick that makes your teeth look brighter and your smile kissable, or a signature perfume that you never seem to tire of, has a comfort to it. (What is your favorite floral bouquet? What's your taste in jewelry?) These are the things that, as gifts, are always appreciated.
(Oh dear, what ever happened to my old friend who was gifted a massive life time supply of Georgio?)
CoCo Chanel said, "Style is being yourself on purpose!"
Of course Style seems to be most about Fashion, things that are most obvious to others when they first see you. At least you hope you can be alluring enough that some people will want to get to know you better because personality counts too!.
Having friends is important. We are all in need of at least one Golden Friend who we can be ourselves with and really talk to and be understood by, someone we can Trust. That isn't as easy as it used to be when we go through so many changes so rapidly. We don't have the leisure we used to have and seem to rush through life, sometimes without reflection. We tend to have friends who are with us only through college, or only while we live in a certain neighborhood, or only while we are married.
The holiday season with all it's distractions may not be the time to do serious soul searching or begin a radical diet, but my guess is that your Wish List and your New Year Resolutions are not so different. It may begin with a Make-Over. It could end with a New You by this time next year.

MIMI SPENCER'S BOOK : "101 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU DIET" IS LUSCIOUS : MUSHROOMS!
Luscious! Doesn't that word make you think of food? I was just reading this book by Mimi Spencer, an award winning UK based fashion and beauty journalist. And it was so very wise and funny! It wasn't just about food sensibility. I was about having a sense about yourself. About what works and just doesn't.
Here is one of so very many passages I'd love to excerpt!
Including the pages entitled THE DOS and DON'TS of SHOES.
The book is C 2009 and published by Rodale.
Missy
On page 117 it says: "Favor mushrooms over meat: A study at John Hopkins Weight Management Center has come to the remarkable conclusion that eating meals made of mushrooms - lasagna, chili, whatever - rather than lean ground beef results in fewer calories being consumed at each meal. Meals made with meat averaged 420 additional calories and 30 additional grams of fat per day. Another study found that if men substitute a 4 ounce portobello mushroom for a 4 ounce grilled hamburger everything they ate a burger over the course of a year, and they didn't change anything else they could have saved more than 18,000 calories and nearly 3,000 grams of fat - the equivalent of 5.3 pounds, or 30 sticks of butter. That is a heck of a lot of fat but, one has to notice, quite a lot of mushrooms too. Perhaps take a modest approach, and make an occasional swap."
