This month is dedicated to  MONICA LEWINSKY - A Survivor Who Is Moving Forward and Still Evolving.

In March 2012 I dedicated a month to Monica with my introductory post title GET OFF THE BACK OF MONICA LEWINSKY - Why Not Blame President Bill Clinton? I elected Monica to MISTRESS MANIFESTO here because it just was never fair that she took the brunt of the revelation that she had an affair with the President William Jefferson Clinton and she has suffered criticism and blame for years since. She was never a Mistress, and she isn't the first woman to have an affair with a married man, but is one of the few who became part of history - 20th Century history - because of it.

Some of the issues for all of us that come up with the scandal that hurt her, beginning when she was just twenty-four years old, include women's sexuality, power-over (an authority figure with responsibilities taking advantage of an underling), and the betrayal of a "friend" (Linda Tripp) pretending to have our best interest in mind - and pretending to be a person who one can confide in - and have that information used against us.

It is now 2025, Monica is much older (51ish) and wiser than when she was an intelligent college girl who was hired to be a White House Intern, and who had the possibility of a dazzling future career ahead of her. She has had to find her way through one obstacle after another. Monica is still evolving.

Monica Lewinsky figures in here at Mistress Manifesto though she has never been a Mistress or a Courtesan, as one of the women who I consider Dynamic. Her youthful affair with the then President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton, made her infamous, though she was a much younger intern and he was, well, he was the President in the Oval Office and the boss.  I have long advocated for Monica, who has suffered for it. So I was happy to hear that she has a modeling gig.

Westerners who were raised in Christianity are told that there is one chance for eternal life and it's this life.  Millions of Westerners, including some who consider themselves to be Christian, have decided that reincarnation  - many lives - makes more sense. Many religions in the past and present do believe in reincarnation and also Karma - the idea that you reap what you sow.  Many people believe that when they bring special talents, skills, or an expertise into this life it's because of their past life accomplishments.  It's not easy to reconcile a special talent for war with spirituality for me, but General George Smith Patton believed he himself was reincarnated as a military strategist ... a genius at war.

ABORTION AS A HUMAN RIGHT : OPINION by MISSY

I'm for CHOICE of ABORTION. It's a choice very many women have made, sometimes under pressure from the man, or family, or simply economic pressure, sometimes because the woman herself knew she was not up to carrying, birthing, or raising another human being to adulthood, at least not based on what she knew of her life at the time. I'm for choice of abortion because of rape and incest, especially of women and girls who are unable to make their own choices due to age, innocence or ignorance, or because they are of low intelligence, or some other factor. Because of sex trafficking and abduction. Because a pregnancy should never be a punishment for being the victim of predators or violence.

I'm for planning - to not have children at all - to the number and spacing of wanted children; however I know that contraception, even the pill, is not 100% guaranteed. I've met those women who got pregnant despite using contraception. A friend of mine has a cousin who had three children and got her tubes tied and still got pregnant again...They joked about the fertility of her family.

I've seen the photos of aborted fetus.  I've seen the photo of a woman who was left to bleed to death in a hotel room where an illegal abortion had been performed on her. I know she had to have been desperate.  Men are almost always involved in the impregnation, if not the decision. Men who do not want a child have been known to assume that the woman would abort if she got pregnant or to hand her cash to go have it done. 

Yet, as difficult as it is to admit, there are so many children who were born unwanted, children whose parents cannot provide for them, children whose parents are irresponsible, so we also must ask ourselves about the pain that person experiences growing up in such circumstances.

It's still complicated and difficult. Yet, I've met those who said an abortion was an easy decision if not an easy experience.

One young woman who is on the pill after having been raped by a stranger, showed me her contraceptive pills as well as the abortion pills she was sent home with from a clinic, telling me she had been advised to take them immediately should she have unprotected sex -wanted or unwanted - again.  (This I wondered about. It seemed excessive to me.) Abortion pills causing an early miscarriage taken at home are not without pain, but apparently not as dangerous as waiting and having a surgical procedure. They became available in the year 2000.  I do wonder what hormones given for any condition including menopause do to the body.  The longer the wait for any form of abortion, the more dangerous it is.

I believe that today everyone but those who intend pregnancy, cooperatively, should be using protection, to not only avoid pregnancy, but SIDS, including HIV, herpes, and chlamydia. This in itself should significantly cut down on the numbers of people having to face THE CHOICE. I'm sure that drinking or drugging to the point where you have a 'what the hell' attitude about unprotected sex is stupidity - if you're smart enough to be stupid. So I question how often the need for abortion started with an unwillingness or inability to obtain and use contraception.

What I think people are reacting to is that in the years since the 1973 Roe Versus Wade decision, medical science has improved to the point where surgery can be done on a fetus before birth.  Babies who were once doomed because they were born just so premature are being kept alive and eventually thrive. So the question of when conscious and viable life begins is there.  As a result, I think there may be some determination that abortion past a certain point in fetal development be illegal.  However, that illegality will once again push such surgeries into the hands of those who do so illegally and dangerously.  (Along with the medical doctors with training who have provided abortions for those who can afford it all along.)

My understanding is that the Supreme Court was considering not banning abortion, but moving that decision from a federal decision back to the individual states' decision. It would be much more difficult for the states to return that decision back to the Supreme Court.

Update June 24, 2022  My understanding is now that the Supreme Court of the United States did overturn abortion and that did automatically end abortion in states where there was a "trigger" response.  I was unaware that states had this in place.  Looking at the map, I'm glad to see that states along the West Coast and some in what we call New England, still provide.  However I will post in another place about this.

Maybe we'll have to rely on some stereotypes here, especially because both Great Britain and the United States are ethnically diverse. I think that means culturally diverse and then there are class issues to consider. However, after reading around the subject I think I can give you 21st Century Foxes a few clues!

British men will seem more reserved than American men, more mannered and formal in general. They are less likely to get too touchy feely when you dance slowly with them. You may need to tone down your exuberance though because all your enthusiasm can come off as trying too hard and even fake. (I'm a little suspicious of over exuberance myself.)

Which leads to that more alcohol is consumed. Expect you'll both have at least one drink on a date. It's used to bust through the formality and without it he may not warm up and tell you how he feels. (Careful though because alcoholism isn't easy to overcome.)

British men are more concerned with grooming and might more often fall into the MetroSexual category in your way of thinking, with men in Britain making more effort with their hair and nails and, reportedly, even plucking their brows. (Cool! if to get rid of the bushy haywire but not so if too pencil thin.) British men are more likely to be clean, neat, and smell good. (What's that aftershave you're wearing?)

He doesn't think he needs his parent's approval. (But if he's young, never married, and rich, he will want them to like you, believe me.)

If he asks you out, he doesn't want to be friends. You might want to meet him for coffee or lunch just to check him out but he wants to go out at night. If you want to check him out attempt to go out in groups or do group activities to check him out. (I'm all for the afternoon dates and slow to get to know you so this would be difficult for me.)

If it helps you any, if you go out with him twice he thinks you're his girlfriend. That can quickly get complicated because he may think you keeping your options open is actually "cheating!" (I don't like this at all!)

Dates can be No Big Deal activities. Don't expect the limo ride to an expensive restaurant any time soon. Unfortunately sex can also be No Big Deal.  (I'm good with the first and not at all good with the last.)

You need to be introduced (and on-line meeting can usually suffice) as they are not going to approach you, a stranger, in public, just because you happen to see each other out  somewhere. (Luckily, with such good manners, being out with your mutual friend, you will be.)

Don't go down a list of questions in order to quickly profile or "know" another person. It's rude.(I agree!)

A confusion of expectations since Old Fashioned gender roles are desirable yet British men want to "Go Dutch" and split the costs of the dates?! (This one is crazy making to me. I think whomever asks the other person on a date should plan it and pay for it. I would not recognize the plan as a date.  I pay for my self when out with friends.)

More forgiveness if your date doesn't go so well. Loose the car in the carpark? Drink a little too much and throw up? I have no idea just how far forgiveness can go. (If it's being kind hearted and less demanding because we're all human, Great. Unfortunately, I've ignored too many red flags in my life.)

MARY PINCHOT MEYER : WAS SHE THE PRESIDENT'S TRUE SOUL MATE? WAS SHE ASSASSINATED BY THE C.I.A?

(October 14, 1920 to October 12, 1964)

Like other women in the life of promiscuous womanizer John Fitzgerald Kennedy, before and during his marriage and his Presidency of the United States in the early 1960's, Mary Pinchot - Meyer knew she was involved in an affair with a married man. The comparison of her to other known Mistresses of J.F.K. stops there.

Unlike Judith Campbell Exner or Mimi Alford, two other of his Mistresses who have been featured over the last couple months here at Mistress Manifesto BlogSpot, Mary came from J.F.K's. same set of people - preppies.  She associated with people who went to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the best women's colleges called "The Seven Sisters." She was "age appropriate" being only about three years younger than he.  They first met at a 1936 prep school dance, when she was fifteen. Like him she had grown up in a wealthy eastern seaboard family with social clout.  She'd been a debutant and expected to marry well. She had married well, mothered three sons, and divorced within that set, to a man named Cord Meyer, a World War II veteran and hero, like J.F.K. who'd come home injured. Often the men served in World War II and joined the CIA like Cord.  She was considered to be well off, not in need of his money.

But wait.  As conservative as all these people seemed to be, there is also the possibility that they considered themselves sophisticates with a rather "European" mentality when it came to having sexual adventures. The men had World War II macho but were they really wife swappers?  It's possible that Mary and the President were kind of like secret hippies, trying marijuana and a hallucigen - some say L.S.D. other psychedelic mushrooms, together.

So much will never be known.

But hey, have you ever seen the television drama series called Mad Men?  Because that was the era, pre-hippies, when even gentleman tried L.S.D.  Some people smoked pot or cigarettes at work, especially creatives.  L.S.D. was used in psychiatric offices as a mind expander. According to author Peter Janney, whose book is the prime reference for this month's posts on Mary Pinchot Meyer, our Mistress of the Month, she knew L.S.D. guru Timothy Leary - this was before it was illegal.  He was a professor at Harvard ; J.F.K's school. She went up there to talk to him about it.  Was turning public officials on to hallucinogenic trips the latest craze among her set?

He came back into her life socially in the late 1950's. Some say a genuine friendship turned into a flirtation and then into an affair.

Maybe what was really radical, so to speak, was that Mary, with her sons off to college and living apart from her ex, was getting involved in the movement for world peace.  She may have influenced J.F.K. to get the United States out of possible war in Viet Nam,  to sign nuclear treaties, to end the Cold War with Russia. If only he had lived.

Only a handful of people knew she was the President's Mistress and many think he really was going to divorce Jackie and marry Mary, his soul mate. This included her sister Tony and her husband, Ben. Or so she thought.

As part of the Georgetown elite, many of their friends and neighbors, people who came to her funeral after she was murdered shortly before her 44th birthday, were likely spies.  Her murderer might have been there among the mourners.  Was someone just angry because she had an affair - say an ex husband or someone getting revenge for Jackie's sake?  according to one interview of author Janney that I listened to, on his death bed Cord Meyer, her ex husband said the same people who killed J.F.K. killed Mary.

Peter Janney, who wrote a book called Mary's Mosaic, calls it, assassinated, just like J.F.K. had been eleven months before! One bullet at close range to the brain, the next to the heart. A professional job, maybe even with a plan to find a dupe who could be accused of murder.

What did she know? Was she set up? Who could be so heartless? Her murder remains unsolved just like Nicole Brown Simpson's is. 

What could have caused this attractive and idealistic woman, who had become an artist, a painter whose work had been exhibited at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, to be murdered on a walking path near a canal, a path she walked daily for exercise after a morning of painting in her garage studio over at her sister's house.

Though a love letter from the President asking her to show up where he was going was found years later, and went up for auction, during their affair Mary showed up at White House dinners with a man named William Walton, who had run J.F.K. Presidential campaign for New York, as her companion. She signed in to the log.  She wasn't brought in through a back way.

Her sister Tony was married to Ben Bradlee, an important newsman. They too had dined at the White House with Jack and Jackie Kennedy. They knew there was supposed to be a secret diary about the affair and so hours after Mary's body was identified, they went to her house and then her art studio looking for it.  Each time they encountered a man named James Jesus Angleton, who had managed to enter before them or was trying to pick the locks.  Serious business.  Mary had said that she got the feeling at times that someone had been in her house when she was gone. This man was the chief of the C.I.A. Counterintelligence from 1954-1975.  

The diary may still exist today. A small artists diary with a few notes that had been found was turned over to Egleton.  Some say, no that was not the diary full of details about the affair.  It may have been burned by Toni and Ben.

Repeatedly I've read that this particular affair was the serious one that could have lead to marriage, if and when Jack divorced Jackie.

This month we'll learn more about this interesting woman who didn't deserve the fate she got.

TEASER:  But the French make an intriguing point for keeping "life partner" and "best friend" reserved for separate people.  For one, they know that mystery is a good thing in a relationship. They don't go to the bathroom with the door open and they don't feel the need to tell their partner everything (Of course, this is different than keeping secrets, which is never okay, even in the French person's modern relationship.) They don't have to do everything together, and prefer to have at least some separate interests, friends, and routines.

The French don't really "date: as we think of it in the US.  In fact, they don't even have a word in the French language for a date. The closest equivalent would be rendez-vouz, which can also describe anything from a doctor's appointment to grabbing a coffee with a friend. A rendez-vouz galant (a romantic encounter) is old fashioned, a little too intense, and rarely used People meet potential partners in groups and social settings, rather than at one on one dinners.

Even when it comes time to spend one on one, they'd opt for a casual stroll or to go to a museum; anything that avoids that awkward first-date experience we all know well, which feels more like an awkward job interview than meeting a potential romantic partner.  Once this "dating" occurs, it's pretty much assumed to be exclusive, no need to have "the talk" because exclusivity is implied.  One on one is a serious step...

SWEET REUNION

MISSY LeHAND LEAVES THIS WORLD

Missy LeHand was sent away to try and regain her health, which she never did, and she died weeks shy of her 48th birthday. Her grave says she was "utterly selfless in her devotion to duty" (that is, not her devotion to FDR). There was a Catholic Mass in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to which the White House sent patriotic red and white flowers with blue ribbon to cover her casket. Though dismissed from her job because she could no longer do it, the Roosevelts paid her medical bills to the end.

To her funeral came First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as well as Joseph P. Kennedy, one of her successful Irish-American friends.

On March 28th, 1945 a military cargo ship was named the USS Marguerite LeHand in her honor.
