I have been thinking about this idea of a Cinderella Fantasy and the thing is, until recently most women expected to be married and have children and not work outside the home for income. It was considered to be the best way to live, perhaps the only way (unless you wanted to join a monastic group or a nunnery) for a decent woman to live, and there was great pressure on women to fulfill the FANTASY that they would get everything they wanted and needed from one person for the rest of their lives and that they could be all to that one man as well. To me that's circa 2021 a Cinderella Fantasy. Cinderella was an abused orphan who married a Prince who took her away from it all and gave her a good life, not only because she was pretty but also because he was looking for someone so special.  When the shoe fits.

LESLIE McRAY was our MISTRESS OF THE MONTH, NOVEMBER 2010

Leslie wrote a book that was published in 1990 called "KEPT WOMEN" subtitle which is now in it's 3rd edition.  She wrote it with Ted Schwartz.

The book is heavily dependent on psychotherapy, and the diagnosis of kept women as being abused children who grow up with a real lack of self esteem and an addiction to the approval of men, usually based on their beauty and sexual prowess.

Yet, I noticed, she said that many of these Mistresses had their own incomes of $30,000 to $100,000 a year. So most of them really didn't need the money, as I see it, and probably had some education or intelligence and the self esteem to be competitive in the work place.

I feel sorry for Leslie that her mistresshood came to what it did and I admire her courage to overcome her past and her own demons to write the book, which does delve into a very dark, scary, aspect of mistressing that some, not all, mistresses experience. This includes sadio-masochism.

Many mistresses apparently "shared and bared" their souls to Leslie, and of course they remain unnamed.

Leslie is also psychology-sure that the whole set up of being kept, by a usually married man, is one in which the man and the mistress are people who cannot keep a commitment (something I personally do not believe is always true either).

Leslie is from a world of beauties who modeled, won contests, and met and were kept by men of international fame. She won something like 70 beauty pageants.

These men who kept Leslie and other women were men with great fortunes - doers - important men. Yet her experience with them was horrible.

She left the mistressing life that caused her so much pain and survived. She is now an active film producer. She has a film on the 9/11 terrorist attack to her credit.

This opera singer came into fame through her exquisite talent. Maria Callas probably met many men who wanted her. But who did she want most? A married man. Ari Onassis. We cannot say that his being married is what kept her interested in conquering him for this frustrated her. Yet, they were a two career couple - both busy.
 
She thought he was "it" and his marriage was besides the point.

CATHERINE WALTERS INTO OLD AGE : WILFRID SCAWEN BLUNT and THE PRINCE OF WALES FIGURE INTO HER SURVIVAL

Perhaps the most surprising thing about courtesan Catherine Walter's story is that ex-lover, poet, and confidant Wilfrid Scawen Blunt figured in it to the end.

After her brief time in Paris, Catherine returned to England.  In the 1880's she featured in the goings on in Mayfair - London, as she had twenty hears earlier when her beauty and horsemanship made her career. She set herself up in a house in 1882 and began writing with Blunt once more, despite the ending of their romance which had been horrible for him. It turns out that she and Wilfrid wrote letters back and forth to each other for forty years.  Perhaps her instincts had been right that he would make for a loyal friend all along.  

At her house in Mayfair, Catherine became the hostess of a salon, which was the more fashionable way to be 'at home' to receive friends on a certain day and hour, as had been the custom. It was because of this salon that she began to be included again in society at least a little bit, as the class structure and notions of womenhood began to change slowly. She held teas on Sunday afternoons, when she knew that men would be able to come and women would generally not be able to. Both Blunt and the Prince of Wales came to visit as did the Prime Minister Gladstone. The women who showed up tended to be artists, writers, and actresses. 

It's not known who all were her 'protectors' were in her years as a courtesan in England, but what is known through Blunt is that in his last visit to her, when he and she were both debilitated with age, she showed him a drawer full of letters which proved that she also had been writing back and forth with the Prince of Wales, who seemed interested also in her welfare. Implied is that possibly the Prince had been one of the men who had once had a relationship with her and provided for her.

Catherine Walters had the gift of making old lovers into friends. (This reminds me of the woman who may be considered the most famous courtesan of the 21st century, Pamela Digby Churchill Harriman who also remained friends with the various men who kept her.)

She kept a friendship with Marquis of Hartington - Spencer Compton Cavendish, now in politics, who had been a man she once wanted to marry, and whose family had provided a liveable, life-long annuity.

However, as she aged she had increasing trouble with her lungs and at one point it was HRH, the Prince of Wales who sent a doctor to attend to her.  In 1889 the cure was the South of France, and months away from cold, rainy London.  Both Hartington and the Prince of Wales came to visit her as she lived in the South of France.  In her mid sixties her health had declined to the point where was in pain and took daily medications. She grew thin and was half deaf and half blind by 1918. She still wrote, using pencil instead of pen, her handwriting difficult to read. In 1920 she had a fatal stroke and died.

EXCERPT: “I understood it would be at the risk of our relationship,” Locke said to the Post, referring to her desire to move away from Eastwood films. “And when I did, that was the beginning of the end.”

By 1989, it was clear the relationship was falling apart, she said. Eastwood was secretly involved with another woman and had two children with her. Meanwhile, Locke claimed that she had had two abortions over the course of their relationship, because Eastwood had told her that he didn’t want more children.

One April day while she was filming Impulse, she returned to their shared home to find that Eastwood had changed the locks and boxed up her clothes, the Post notes. EXCERPT: Ms. Locke made her directorial debut in 1986 with "Ratboy," a somewhat satirical tale of an alien boy with ratlike features.  "In sociological terms, he exists somewhere between E.T. and the Elephant Man, as an innocent alien adrift in an unsympathetic world." Janet Maslin wrote in a largely unfavorable review in The Times.  Ms. Locke also starred in the movie.

After many years off screen, she re-emerged this year in "Ray Meets Helen," a romantic drama, directed by Alan Rudolph, about two lonely late-middle-aged strangers who meet after separately coming into money.

He didn't believe in love and was thrice divorced and he thought relationships with women was all about having money but what a change!  He and his much younger wife is going into a "no divorce" marriage.

I was horrified to read how badly Maria Halpin and Carrie Phillips were treated. Of all of these Lucy Mercer comes closest to being an actual mistress by my way of thinking. Sally Hemmings - Thomas Jefferson could not legally marry her. Kay Summersby had her own job with the army first and had an affair with the married Dwight while his personal driver and assistant but he made no promises to her so I think of it as a wartime romance, and Judith Campbell may have been a party girl who got around, but besides having sex with J.F.K. it doesn't sound like he supported her financially. Only Lucy Mercer sounds to have had an actual long term LOVE AFFAIR with the unhappily but loyally married Roosevelt...

Back in February 2011 - twelve years ago! - here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO, this was the headline for my first post about Alina and in recent weeks she has finally spoken.  Alina says Putin is a nice man and she loves him. That month she was Mistress of the Month and it was dedicated to her.

What happened is that, due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the reporters have all been trying to find out more about Putin's personal life, which he has always kept private. Locating a gorgeous house that displays his wealth, but which he says he does not personally own, Alina was also located.  It appears that she is living on the property in a house of her own, very much the Lover next door. These reports have been all over the Internet, with Daily Mail On Line (Daily Mail UK) perhaps having the scoop.

The rhythmic gymnast is a champion athlete and also quite beautiful. She is also a patriot of Russia. From a womanly point of view, I think it's wonderful that she is happy and has achieved a romantic whirl of a relationship.  However, one always does wonder how much she knows or understands about Russia's destruction of Ukraine and its people.  I would wonder about her as I have wondered about Adolph Hitler's long time mistress Eva Braun.  You see, maybe this is erroneous but Eva has not been considered highly intelligent while Alina Kabaeva (also spelled Kabayeva) is certainly highly intelligent. Yet, far from the warfront in a palace, she may be kept ignorant or devote herself more to the man than the country.

SECRET LETTERS THAT GAVE RISE TO THE SUICIDE EXPLANATION OF MARY VETSERA

Were letters written by Mary Vetsera found in a forgotten bank security box? According to an article in The Journal ie, August 2, 2015, 126 year old letters written by the 17 year old Baroness were found including one to her mother, a suicide note, asking forgiveness.

"Please forgive me for what I've done, I could not resist love."

The Austrian National Library clearly accepted that these letters are authentic. They day the letters had actually been in their archives since 1926. The find contained photos of her family.

Mary wrote that she wanted to be buried next to the 30 year old Prince as if that was his wish.

I personally think that there may have been various schemes involved to change the story, including ones that the young Baroness' family cooperated with. A shocking murder-suicide of aristocratic and royal persons that was world news had to be embarrassing as well as deeply upsetting. 

One of the reasons I think this way is that Mary was never buried next to Prince Rudolf. She was buried and buried again.

According to one of the YouTube videos I watched while researching for this month's posts reported that Mary not only buried and reburied and reburied again but was targeted by grave robbers.

In 1889, upon the bloody scene's discovery, Mary was taken away from the Meyering hunting castle and given a crude burial in a wooden box. That same year her family built her a crypt at the Heiligenkteuz cemetery with a stained glass image of her praying. In 1945 at the end of WWII, Russian soldiers broke in and the vandalizing continued. In 1959 she was put into a new tin coffin. There was another break in 32 years later. The tomb was raided in 1991. In 1992 again. In 1993 another newer coffin was used and the grave secured by filling it in with earth. Her old tin coffin was given to be put on display elsewhere. 

Such morbid curiosity!

THE CROWN PRINCE : MISTRESS MANIFESTO FILM REVIEW

In a retelling of the the vivid story of Mary Vetsera and Crown Prince Rudolf, this film attempts to take us back in time to a period when stability in Europe was in question and Crown Prince Rudolf was a reluctant heir, frankly not suited for the role. The Prince seemed desperate for a life of irresponsibility.

A bad relationship with his father and his parents own unhappy arranged marriage as no good example, and with few Royal women of interest, the Prince pursued the party. He went to houses of prostitution and got VD which wasn't curable. He used morphine, though a doctor supplied it. The family were devout Catholics so he upset them and the bishops by hanging out with the Masons and mixing with commoners. He had a secret romance with a Jewish woman, who didn't know he was a Prince. But, like the Buddha, he also discovered the suffering, the poverty, the orphans in the streets, the fact that there were Greek Catholics and people of other religions in the Empire he was born to rule. He was no longer protected from the realities of the Empire. 

He's a progressive, interested in the new technology of electricity. He had new ideas that were not welcome. When he wasn't in Vienna, he's in Prague. Oddly, using a Jewish pen name, he writes articles that are published in a Jewish newspaper. 

After rejecting five possible matches, he could resist no longer and married Stephanie of Belgium who hadn't even had her period. Stephanie soon grew into a woman who had political opinions and was into her role as an upcoming emperor's wife. He thought of her as just one more society girl. The couple were miserable, especially when he gave her VD that resulted in infertility and there was no longer a reason for their marriage. 

His mother lived a life separate from his father, who had a mistress. She even lived in Godollo, a town in Hungary - part of the Austrian Empire but far away. So the Prince accepted an assignment in the military, as it was hoped this responsibility would give him self discipline and confidence. His father told him to fix his marriage. He wanted an annulment. The couple followed his parent's example and he lived a bachelor's life separate life from his wife.

Despite all this, there were women competing for the Prince and mothers pushing their daughters to become his mistress. The question was and is, did Mary Vetsera really want to be with him or has her life story been rewritten to explain how or why a beautiful young women, who could have had a had good marriage among the nobility, ended up in a suicide pact.

Her love for the Crown Prince may have been played up, so that she appears to have been desperately in love, possessed, enthralled and - utterly hopelessly fatally romantic. The story might have also been invented, I speculate, to get a pushy mother out of trouble or save her reputation. (For, from other sources, I know it appears there was a cover up that her family cooperated with that resulted in her reburial.) Was Mary a murder victim? Was the Prince not just a rebel but mentally ill.

The story goes that Mary, even as a girl, had a crush on him, and her mother ripped up the pictures of him that Mary kept of her idol, when he married to discourage her.

Perhaps there was another woman, a relative, who served as an intermediary between Mary and Rudolf? For in this version of what happened at Meyering, called a hunting lodge but one of his residences and the scene of wild parties, the Prince, who was now shooting up morphine and a very ill addict, not to mention possibly becoming deranged from the complications of VD, only planned to kill himself, but young Mary went to him, desiring to be with her Prince for eternity, the only way they could be together.

Mitzi, the common and more pragmatic Mistress is shown as the only person to be concerned about him to reach out for help. She was rebuffed.

The production appears to have come out of Austria or Germany and is rich with details. Perhaps it's my research that has lead me to more speculation.

A SECRETIVE BERNIE TIEDI : SEXUAL ABUSE AS A CHILD - PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE BY THE WOMAN HE MURDERED

In this article, circa 2016, in Texas Monthly, writer Skip Hollensworth displays his conflicting thoughts and feelings about Bernie Tiedi.  I'm excerpting the points I think are most important.  Missy

Tiedi quickly confessed, stating that he had initially enjoyed being around Nugent until she became "very hateful, " very possessive over my life" and "evil and wicked."  He admitted that he had been fantasizing about hitting her over the head with a bat but had ended up shooting her because he "didn't want her to suffer."

... Toward the end of the trial, he testified that he had loved Nugent even though life with her had been like "being in prison to some degree. . . being smothered"  He said that he'd never actually planned to kill her, despite what he'd said in his confession, and that when he'd done so, he'd felt as if he had watched himself pickup a gun and start firing.

... During her investigation, Cole discovered that among the items police had taken from Tiede's house after his arrest were four books on childhood sexual abuse.  She went to see Tiedi, and he eventually - and reluctantly - told her that he had endured years of molestation as a boy at the hands of an uncle, information that he had never revealed to his original lawyer.

... Cole asked a prominent Houston forensic psychiatrist named Richard Pesikoff to interview Tiede.  Based on their conversation, Pesikoff issued a report concluding that Tiede's "ability to repress and compartmentalize the abusive events from childhood and adolescence was ultimately overwhelmed by the repeated and extensive psychological abuse he suffered from Ms. Nugent."

LA TIMES : SAGA OF THE POLITICAL PARTY GIRLS from 1998

Well written - creatively written - but do I agree with Patt Morrison, an esteemed journalist and television personality circa 1998?  In this article Patt says Monica Lewinsky seems so much less innocent than Judith Campbell Exner was at the same age. Yet, when I talk to older men they tell me that women in the 1950's were more mature than women of the same age in the 1960's.  She also credits Judith with being far more discreet and not telling about her affair with J.F.K. to just anybody.
