FLORENZ ZIEGFELD HELPED LAUNCH MANY WOMEN'S CAREERS

 

The film came out in 1936 and featured a large and well loved cast of 

characters, in particular the leading men William Powell, Luise Rainer, and actress Myrna Loy.

It suggested the life of Florenz Ziegfeld, 

as a man who womanized, made a fortune but lost it, 

and who helped launch many a showgirl's career.

Ziegfeld girls often went on to pursue modeling, acting, 

and marrying or mistressing rich men.

Several of them have been featured here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO.

When it came to actresses, it was Mary Pickford who established United Artists, along with others. Clara Kimball Young was the next, and by 1916 many actresses had the same idea. They wanted more control over their careers, to expand, and to prosper.

PEGGY HOPKINS JOYCE : SUGAR BABY ICON : SHE ADMITTED TO BEING MATERIALISTIC : WAS THAT THE PROBLEM?

Peggy Hopkins Joyce was and is considered to be the icon of the Gold Digger, a woman who seduces men to marry her, men who have money, is insincere or without love for them, divorces, and then moves on to her next conquest. But it seems to me that the flamboyant Peggy was in her youthful bloom when she succeed to do so and that, although some men do the same, and without apology, few women can get away with it. 

I say that as more than one woman friend of mine has found herself married for money or traded in by her husband/partner when a richer woman wanted him. The ruthlessness of such maneuvers can be heartbreaking.

Peggy was honest about her materialism and perhaps because she projected some humor about it and herself, it wasn't held against her too much. It was part of her personae. She claimed her reputation. Some say she was "The Original Material Girl." Some say she was an inspiration for Marilyn Monroe of Diamonds Are A Girls' Best Friend fame for her depiction of Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Years went by and Peggy went without marriage, and without children, though we have no idea how many men came into her life or left it between marriages or if she ever wanted to be a parent.

Peggy was born in 1893 as Emma Marguerite Upton. She had two marriages later in her life.

Peggy's fifth marriage was to a man named Anthony Easton, an engineer. They married in 1945 and were married until about her sixth marriage in 1953 was to Andrew Glifford Meyers, a retired banker and she died of cancer in 1957 still married to him. I wonder if she ever went by Mrs. Easton or Mrs. Meyers.

THE SKYROCKET : PEGGY HOPKINS JOYCE IN 1926

This was Peggy Hopkins Joyce's first full length movie, as she had done "shorts" before

 and it was intended to launch her movie star career 

and allow her to be know for an accomplishment

 other than meeting, marrying, and divorcing rich men...

It's a rags to riches to rags again story.

According to author Axel Madsen, on page 131-132 of his book, Mickey Neilan had bought the Edendale studio from a bankrupt Harry Garson and Clara Kimball Young for $300,000, 

refurbished it, and with financing from Pat Powers made a movie about Hollywood, called The Skyrocket. The film was "a thinly disguised retelling of Neilan's torrid affair with Gloria Swanson!

I've been the Mistress of a rich wall street broker for a year and a half. He moved me into an apartment six months ago. We aren't getting along. I want to break with him and he probably wants to break with me. I can't afford to move out. Do you think he ought to give me some money and how much?

ANSWER FROM MISSY

Hello Melissa,

Yes, I do think a rich man who has moved a Mistress into an apartment so that she could be there for him and who wishes to break with her should help her.  This is not severance from a job or a pension. It is because you once loved and you both gave it a go to see what might happen next. And when people love each other, they try to ease a break up. He well knows that you cannot afford to move out on your own and what your finances have been and are. It is good and right.

I suggest you have to have 'the talk' with the man and you have to get into it spontaneously, because no one likes to have 'the talk.'  (And yes, you can go to couple's counseling.) 

I think it would be reasonable for him to find another apartment for you that is affordable and pay for about six months of the rent, as well as money for the basics such as utilities and food. Hopefully you will be able to get work and independence by then.  I base that on how long you've been together. If it had been more years, more money.

Often a Mistress experiences an elevation in her lifestyle and it can be difficult to go back to what one came from. Whatever self-improvement or awareness you have obtained through this experience you go forward with!

READING E-BOOKS for MISTRESS MANIFESTO BLOGSPOT

Hello Readers!

In December 2016 I finally decided to try reading by e-book. Basically, I've always been a book lover - a book worm - and one who uses libraries, goes to books sales and bookstores and book fairs. I always seems to have two or three books to read at a time. For this blog I like to read at least one well regarded book before choosing my subject matter such as the Mistress of the Month but sometimes I read books that I reject or two or three or four. I also read magazine articles and news on line, including some old archived articles. Then I'm ready to make a decision and take a position.

I've learned over the last few months that there are some true positives for reading by e-book. One is saving me time, though I still do visit my library and read paper. I check to see if a book I want to read is available as an e-book and sometimes after a chapter or so I decide the books isn't appealing and that saves me borrowing or buying it. Another is that I can use the search in Overdrive (my app) to scan the book before I read it to see if there is much reference to the person or subject that I want to learn about. For instance, more than one mistress featured at MISTRESS MANIFESTO has so been in the shadows that you might have to read a few books to find a mention of her name. I know I can count on the book being mine to read for 21 days reading an e - sometimes renewable several times - before I can take notes. I still take notes by hand - sometimes hundreds of pages. I go back to the bookmarked pages when I'm taking notes to see if I still feel the information on those pages is relevant.

Of course books are the work of writers - authors - and really when I reference a book that's more than a year or two old it's like revaluing the work. I look at this blog as a way to introduce my readers to many of these talented, skilled, ambitious, and determined people who have managed to produce an entire manuscript, market it, get agents, get PR, and then - some of them - do that again. As I understand it, the initial push to market a book is when they make it or break it financially.

As part of the Google Blogger there are stats. I look at these once in a while and see that many people are reading MISTRESS MANIFESTO on their cell phone. Although some of the most popular posts have "legs of their own" and so take dominance when you use the Internet to find the blog or information about someone of interest to you, I encourage you to seek a bit further, read another month, use the archives to see who else might interest you, because truly, many hours are put into each and every subject!

  Daisy Greville loved animals and kept several including a white peacock.

THE BERESFORDS ATTEMPT TO PREVAIL OVER DAISY AND THE PRINCE BUT THEIR WARWICK TITLES WERE SOON RECIEVED : DAISY'S SPENDING IS OUT OF CONTROL

That passionate letter Daisy had once sent to her lover, the married Charles Beresford, continued to cause problems.

In 1891, Charlie Beresford threatened The Prince. If his wife, Mina, Lady Beresford, was not restored to her place in society, he would publish Daisy's letter. He was going to use the 19th century media. Beresford let the prime minister know this too. Would the prime minister tell the Prince what to do or would the Prince tell the prime minster? The prime minster was savvy. He said that the social laws of their class were such that it would not be appropriate for Charlie to disgrace his former mistress by making her affair with the Prince public.  Additionally, one had to consider what it would do to the Princess Alexandra if the public got a whiff of what her husband was up to.  Round and round it went, with Charlie expecting an apology to his wife, her reinstatement, and for Daisy to be banished for one year.

Frances Greville considered divorce but threw that idea out soon enough. She was "the devil he knew." In 1893 Frances Greville became the fifth Earl of Warwick and he and Daisy moved into Warwick Castle.

Excerpt page 201: ... "Daisy agreed to withdraw from court for a short period of time. This really was not much of a penance for Daisy; everybody loved her - with the exception of Mina - and as acknowledged mistress of the Prince of Wales, she could do as she please.  At this stage, Bertie's love for Daisy never faltered. The prince continued to write adoring letters to his "darling Daisywife." and Daisy continued to receive his attentions, recalling in late life that "he had manners and he was very considerate."

Daisy was still in trouble with her husband though. He had taken a decade or more of Daisy's unfaithful behavior at their family home, Easton Lodge. He knew a lot and he felt foolish. It wasn't that the Prince of Wales got the most attention from Daisy all those years, but that she had gone wild and had entertained many lovers there. She had also sold off the contents of Warwick Castle to continuing to finance her extravagant lifestyle!

She threw a party at Christmas time, before they moved into the Castle, in which she spared no expense for the children of their estate. Electric lights blazed, the tree was heavy with gifts. She gave fur-lined coats to servants and bags of toys to the children. Each member of her house party left with silverware and jewels. The Greville estate employed dozens who made their lives - and that of their many guests - comfortable and beautiful.

Excerpt pages 202-203

..."At five o'clock the fifty household servants left their duties in order to arrange themselves on either side of the ballroom, and the village children were ushered in. Behind the children came one hundred outside workmen, gamekeepers, woodman, gardeners, estate artisans, stablemen, and motormen....

Then, after the Grevilles had moved into the castle, Daisy threw another party, and this one was a ball with four hundred guests who wore eighteenth century court dress in the colors white and gold. She dressed as Queen Marie Antoinette. She had the castle remodeled and refurbished it so that the walls were hung with tapestries. Candles and chandeliers illuminated the party and white flowers such as lilies from France perfumed the air. In her way she was trying to make Warwick Castle into the Palace of Versailles for one night.

This party, which was highly criticized in a small newspaper called Clarion would lead to a sort of conversion for Daisy. Her kindness and over the top generosity was in place but she would begin to turn her attention to the poor and become a socialist!

Unlike some of the Royal mistresses we have learned about here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO, Daisy had a tremendous personal estate and was a member of the peerage. Her husband was also rich and they inherited a historic castle. It is unsaid, but it's also likely that the Prince gave her gifts such as jewelry. Perhaps beautiful Daisy simply had no idea what it was to live without, the way all those good people, though employed by her estate, had to.

OTHER BOOKS AUTHORED BY LADY ANNABEL GOLDSMITH (SHE LOVED DOGS!)

 

In this book Lady Annabel Goldsmith wrote about her childhood and growing up in a rich family, and her parents ; her father a liberal Member of Parliament who raised her after her mother died young of cancer. She married Mark Birley at the age of twenty, and had three children by him. She writes about her children, her affair with Sir James Goldsmith, but most of all some of the fascinating people who were part of her social life. You can see by the title that these people were welcomed into her home and friendship. Pelham cottage was the place she lived until she and Sir James Goldsmith finally got married and she moved.

I remember reading Annabel's memoir and she clearly loved dogs. She wrote this book about one of them.

This book is a lot of fun, as Annabel recounts Copper's adventures on the aristocratic social scene as well as the London buses, and well, you know that, like most dog owners, there had to be some premonitions about what this particular dog was up to ...

She contributed to this book, all about the life and death of best friends. Dogs were important to Annabel and her family and her garden at Ormeley Lodge has memorials to some of them.
