DEAREST MADAME by Irma Hunt is an old book published in 1978. And though we find defining who is or isn't a mistress or mantress difficult, since all adulterers are not mistresses and not all mistresses are adulterers (and legal marriage isn't the only way to be married), here is the list as presented by Irma Hunt...

Sally Hemmings - Thomas Jefferson  (This one is controversial via other sources)
Maria Halpin - Grover Cleveland
Carrie Phillips - Warren G. Harding
Lucy Mercer - Franklin Roosevelt

Judith Campbell - John F. Kennedy  (In my opinion Campbell was not a mistress.)

I was horrified to read how badly Maria Halpin and Carrie Phillips were treated. Of all of these Lucy Mercer comes closest to being an actual mistress by my way of thinking. Sally Hemmings - Thomas Jefferson could not legally marry her. Kay Summersby had her own job with the army first and had an affair with the married Dwight while his personal driver and assistant but he made no promises to her so I think of it as a wartime romance, and Judith Campbell may have been a party girl who got around, but besides having sex with J.F.K. it doesn't sound like he supported her financially. Only Lucy Mercer sounds to have had an actual long term LOVE AFFAIR with the unhappily but loyally married Roosevelt...

A mistress should always maintain her independence. That includes keeping friendships with people who you know, not just those who you are friends with because you are part of a couple. Keep in touch with family - even if you cannot disclose your lifestyle to them. An it means having a way of making money enough to support yourself so that you will never be stranded in poverty.

A good mistress ALWAYS plans for her future, using her intelligence to get a career - even if it is part time and flexible - for herself. A good mistress doesn't get so "busy" that she forgets the important people in her life who were there before Him and hopefully will be there after...

Now, I've read this book and I think Sarah is materialistic and very very bitter. We're hoping Sarah will write the book! And here is one of the reasons why! BECAUSE THIS WAY SARAH CAN MAKE SOME MONEY OF HER OWN IN A PROFESSION OUTSIDE MISTRESSING!

Pamela Des Barres, the Queen of the Groupies, has turned her life into a successful creative writing career, why not Sarah?

According to the page 13 report, Gordon, 42, has denied having an affair with Sarah.

That's RIGHT! Just like being a wife and mother used to be and is (for a dwindling number of women in the United States). What we learn from history is that MARRIAGE often had little to nothing to do with LOVE.

People were very pragmatic. And they were perhaps doomed from birth to keep to certain status and occupation. Historical mistresses sometimes rose up from the lower classes, due to beauty or talent or skill or love or fate...

Today, Mistress as a term is used indiscriminately. But part of the problem is that it's too easy to call a woman who is having an affair with a married (or living with someone) man a Mistress, when she is actually a hardworking career woman who doesn't count on him for her support, or even expect expensive gifts.

You must ask yourself just how important material things are to you. Are you truly greedy? Or do you know what having "enough" is? If you want riches, then you must not settle for less, at least not when (or if!) you are young, beautiful, talented, sexy - and educated. At some point in your life though you must decide if you want riches married, or if you can accept riches unmarried but otherwise occupied!

REVISITING POSTS FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF MISTRESS MANIFESTO : THIS SHOULD BE FUN!

This song set the mood for Mistress Manifesto when I started blogging in 2009. 

It seems there are hundreds of novels - if not thousands - which focus on the woman character as a Mistress. Often the woman is overwhelmed with passion for the man but strives to regain her power in the relationship.

When it comes to songs with lyrics that acknowledge adultery, very few.  Even though it seems having an affair with a married person isn't a rare occurrence.

I always hope that those of you who are considering an Alternative Lifestyle will read my blog and that learning about people who have lived it will help you make a Choice.
