KARIN STANFORD is Mistress of the Month for May 2011!

She's Jesse Jackson (Sr.)'s ex, with whom he has a daughter, Ashley. Karin has gone after child support and been fairly quoted in the news, though she says it was the FEDS who outed them.

Jesse Jackson is one of those Christian Ministers who has a lifestyle that's barely conservative, a charismatic man, and one who had Presidential ambitions. It was he who counseled then President of the United States, Bill Clinton, when Bill got caught lying about Monica Lewinsky. It just may be that because of his affair with Karin, Jesse had to give up on a White House Future.

Karin says she has "no regrets," and thinks of their daughter as a miracle child, born in 2000. Karin started life over as a professor of Pan-African Studies and Politics - at California State College, Northridge, in Los Angeles California, and is the author of a book titled "Cancer Survivors, Breaking the Silence - Inspirational Stories of Black Cancer Survivors", as well as other books.

Like many modern mistresses, she is an educated woman, who could support herself well, without a man's help. Never the less, love and awe of a man, led her to being a mistress, at least for a time in her life. 

UPDATE AUGUST 2013: Karin, if we count hits only, is probably the most popular mistress I've written about. A recent comment about what would have happened if a CONSERVATIVE Public Figure had been involved with Karin intrigues me. As recent new information comes out about Monica Lewinsky and President William Clinton comes out, I think that in fact there have been many politicians linked with women other than their wives. Some of these mostly men are Republicans, some are Democrats. Some of these men have suffered for it, even if it only appeared they had an affair, or it was discovered they had many affairs, and some have fathered children in long term adultery. Consider Gary Hart. However, defining who is a mistress these days is complicated by the general lack of marriage, couples who lived together, people who have an alternative lifestyle such as living in deliberate polygamy or living with more than one lover all in the same household. I don't dwell on those who have affairs but not RELATIONSHIPS, and where there is a child there is usually a RELATIONSHIP.

THERE ARE TIMES WHEN I AM SO PROUD OF OTHER WOMEN AND TODAY IS ONE OF THEM : CONTACT YOUR POLITICIANS : EPSTEIN FILES TRANSPARENCY ACT

Among the things I admire about these women is the mention of other women who are not believed and may not be able to speak out or get justice in other countries, who don't speak English, from Russia, Ukraine, and other countries, women who were also sex trafficked by or for Jeffrey Epstein. These women have courage and they ask that others come forward if they too were abused and/or trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein - Ghislaine Maxwell - or others we have not heard about. There are hundreds of women who have been silent or silenced.

In this blog, MISTRESS MANIFESTO, we explore some women who were no doubt raped, sexually exploited, some who made the best of their situation in their place and time when, overall, women had little to no opportunity to have education, careers, or opportunities for independence - even marriage could rarely be avoided. We would not know about most of them if it were not for literature, that they or someone else thought they were interesting and important enough to write about. 

Overall, life has improved for women, but there are still many who find themselves in situations they can't easily get out of, if at all.

Choice has expanded in Western culture, but it always rests in truth - information. There are so many situations in life were a person not only feels powerless, they are powerless.

As some of these women have stated they were fourteen years old, or sixteen years old, when they went to give "massage" to a rich older man who made it sexual abuse, intimidated them, and told them they had to bring other women to him. This is one of the reasons I suggest that it's probably not a good idea to consider becoming a Mistress until one has lived a while, completed an education, started a career, and explored one's own sexuality with consensual partners.

As we all know, Monica Lewinsky knew President William Jefferson Clinton was married.  His wife has been the very high profile Hillary Clinton, a lawyer, and a First Lady who would also run for President of the United States some years later. Of course, so did the President know he was married. And Monica was not married, and much younger, and crazy for Bill. He was in position of power. She was not.

But ah, what about those of you who just met someone, have been dating a little while, maybe have already started having sex, and have feelings for that someone, but their personal life is a mystery? They are not wearing a wedding band so you may think that person is free to be with you. 

I'm convinced that the way into being a Mistress for most Western 21st century women is just that; first you fall, then you find out. After all, there's a better chance than ever that you're going to earn money of your own and have independence unthinkable in previous generations. Unlike many of the women profiled here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO, who had little choice in life, you probably don't need to survive by being a Courtesan. What happens if you're already involved when he tells you or you find out he's partnered? Maybe you've fallen for him. Well, you don't want to let go. Some men do know that your attachment to them will make it difficult for you to break off with them and that's how they seduce. Let's not blame the men totally though. Some women who are married find themselves attracted to and involved with a man and don't tell the whole truth right away either.  (And yes, I'm aware I'm writing this in hetero context but it happens in homosexual relationships too.) Also, you may be innocent, inexperienced, or naive. You want to start out trusting people and being open to love. (Me too!)

It can be confusing also because many 21st century women know that there is no commitment until the two of you agree which means someone has to suggest it and you have to talk about it. Until that agreement, made of Choice, you know that this other person may very well be "dating around" or "sleeping around." So when he doesn't call for a few days, or seems to want to see you last minute rather than make a plan, you may not automatically think that it's because he's partnered.

By the way, I can't easily define promiscuity. Let's talk basics. Do you know his real name, or where he lives? Where he works? You should know some basic information like that and, if you don't, you may be having sex with a stranger. All of this means that it's best to get to know someone better before you get involved. Don't get picked up. Even if you meet someone at a party and feel wildly attracted to them, don't leave the party with them. I have come to understand that use of drugs or alcohol can blur your ability to make Choices in the moment, which can lead to devastating consequences. Moderation is advised.  It also helps to have a best friend along so you can be supportive to each other in any situation that might come up.

Married, Living Together, Domestic Partnership - same difference.  Or in a steady, committed relationship but not living together.

If he is ...

He may call you or text you last minute to ask you to meet with him. (How many women is he juggling?)

He may suggest you provide your own transportation to the meet up. (Providing your own transportation can be a positive though, especially in early stages of getting to know someone.) Maybe he doesn't want to be seen in your area?

He may call or text you for a hook up or want a friends with benefits arrangement. (If you read this blog, you know I oppose these arrangements. You only have so much libidinal energy.)

He may have local sex with you in places other than his place or yours, such as in the office or a motel, or out in nature, as if he is seizing the moment and thinks this is exciting.

He may have you waiting for his call or for him to make time or show up. (Mistresses often do a lot of waiting for visits and such and if you decide to be a Mistress, consider that you should continue having a separate life.)

He may cancel, show up late, or leave early. (He's got other responsibilities.)

He may give you his business card and suggest you call him at work, avoiding giving a personal phone number. 

He may suggest it's best if he calls you or demand you not call him.

He may excuse himself to make a quick call often enough for you to be suspicious. Can they really not do without him being on-call for business?

He may want to come over to your place and hang out there rather than take you out in public.

He may see you but only have time for sex, even though you had more of a plan.

He may want to go places where you will not meet up with his friends or family or partner - nor yours!

He may avoid Friday or Saturday "date nights" routinely. (Meeting up with a new person for coffee or lunch during the day can be a good way to get to know them.)

He may ask you to meet him out of town or for a vacation.

He may avoid seeing you on holidays. (He's gone for that three day weekend...)

He may gift you or celebrate your birthday or Valentine's day early but not be available on those days.

He may say he is going out of town on business or traveling but will be back in touch.

He may use his work as a reason or excuse for why he's busy or been out of touch.

He may introduce you as his coworker or secretary or assistant when you are not.

He may not talk about his partner at all, as if he or she doesn't exist. 

He may say that he and his partner are friends or together to raise their children. (If they are legally divorced, this is ideal for the children, so -)

He may say, "You didn't ask" when you say he did not tell you he had a partner. (Not telling is also a way of being dishonest.) 

These behaviors are ones in which the person is avoiding tell you that they have a partner or someone else in their life. Deception and evasiveness is lying. However, you can't expect anyone to tell you everything there is to know about them quickly, so - All of these behaviors can be about dating more than one person when no promises of faithfulness or loyalty or commitment has been made rather than being married too.

More tricky:

He may take off his wedding band and not be wearing it when he goes out seeking another lover.

He may use his children as an excuse for where he is. (Of course you want him to have a relationship with them!)

He throws any receipts - such as for restaurant meals - gifts for you - or the hotel room away rather than risk taking them home.

You do get to meet some of his friends or business partners or others "in the know" about his personal life, basically people who will not out him or will accept you. Who are the women they are with?

I have tremendous concern about the spreading of venereal diseases including HIV/AIDS because these impact your health and all relationships you have now and in the future. If you're not using protection to avoid STD's you may also be risking pregnancy you have not planned on. Wanting to remain healthy is a best reason for being cautious.

In 2014, she wrote a viral essay for Vanity Fair titled "Shame and Survival." The next year, she did a blockbuster TED Talk called "The Price of Shame." In 2021, she served as a producer on the Ryan Murphy series American Crime Story: Impeachment - willing to relive the worst year of her life in exchange for a chance to have a say in how it was told.

Finally, people were ready to really hear her side. MONICA LEWINSKY : A SURVIVOR WHO IS MOVING FORWARD and STILL EVOLVING

This month is dedicated to  MONICA LEWINSKY - A Survivor Who Is Moving Forward and Still Evolving.

In March 2012 I dedicated a month to Monica with my introductory post title GET OFF THE BACK OF MONICA LEWINSKY - Why Not Blame President Bill Clinton? I elected Monica to MISTRESS MANIFESTO here because it just was never fair that she took the brunt of the revelation that she had an affair with the President William Jefferson Clinton and she has suffered criticism and blame for years since. She was never a Mistress, and she isn't the first woman to have an affair with a married man, but is one of the few who became part of history - 20th Century history - because of it.

Some of the issues for all of us that come up with the scandal that hurt her, beginning when she was just twenty-four years old, include women's sexuality, power-over (an authority figure with responsibilities taking advantage of an underling), and the betrayal of a "friend" (Linda Tripp) pretending to have our best interest in mind - and pretending to be a person who one can confide in - and have that information used against us.

It is now 2025, Monica is much older (51ish) and wiser than when she was an intelligent college girl who was hired to be a White House Intern, and who had the possibility of a dazzling future career ahead of her. She has had to find her way through one obstacle after another. Monica is still evolving.

MONICA LEWINSKY MODELS SOPHISTICATED FASHIONS and ADVOCATES FOR VOTING

Monica Lewinsky figures in here at Mistress Manifesto though she has never been a Mistress or a Courtesan, as one of the women who I consider Dynamic. Her youthful affair with the then President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton, made her infamous, though she was a much younger intern and he was, well, he was the President in the Oval Office and the boss.  I have long advocated for Monica, who has suffered for it. So I was happy to hear that she has a modeling gig.

For the rest of her life, despite a marriage that endured, Fanny and her husband would never escape her past completely, kind of like what has happened to Monica Lewinsky, never a prostitute or a mistress or a courtesan, who's brief affair with President William Clinton as a young woman, has made her infamous, though she has lived many years past it.

I suppose the criticism and mockery that Fanny endured also says much about popular culture in Georgian England at the time.  For so many of the elite did buy sex. But as it is today, those selling it rather than those buying it are the ones who pay the highest price.  Missy

OVERALL the FRENCH ATTITUDE about the Monica Lewinsky and President William Jefferson Clinton affair was "Who cares?"

Missy here! I can say that I WISH Americans had the same attitude because if we did MONICA LEWINSKY would not have had (or have) such a horrible time. It was so dishonorable for President William Jefferson Clinton to allow her to take the blame. Bob Hope Golf Classic was a PGA tour staple and was renamed the Humana Challenge in 2012.  Though a Republican and the friend of several Presidents of the United States,  his Desert Classic Series became sponsored by Humana and President William Jefferson Clinton.  He played on hundreds of different courses around the world and golfing was something that his wife Dolores also enjoyed and something they could do together.  At their best, both Bob and Dolores were very good at golf.

In March of 2012 I elected Monica as subject of the month, if not Mistress of the Month, saying everyone needed TO GET OFF HER BACK.  (You may want to bring up all those posts by either going to the archive or using the search feature of this Google Blogger.) 

After all, President William Jefferson Clinton, a known womanizer with a very tolerant wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, was and is still respected. He had the nerve to call a woman he was having sex play with at the White House "that woman" and denied he had sex because he went Old School and decided that sex is only intercourse.

Hillary played Black Madonna and refused to speak to him for some weeks as punishment, while Monica, who was much young, infatuated, sexy, and impressed with the power of the Presidency, has lived a life of suffering for her mistake. 

Like some other women, such as Marilyn Monroe, who are called Mistresses in the Press, Monica was never actually a Mistress to the President or any other man that I know of, but I feel sure that back in the day if she couldn't marry Clinton she would have been happy to be his mistress.  In fact at this point I wish Monica had become some wonderful man's mistress because that would be better for her than what she has experienced which is to be a social outcaste.

In the current Vanity Fair article she confesses to being not suicidal but near suicidal at times over the last years since the scandal that will always have her name attached.  She also is open minded about having a life with another woman if not another man since men have also been a problem.  Intelligent and educated, having gone to London to achieve a Master's degree, she has yet to find a good employer.

One of the lessons of Monica Lewinsky is about trusting another woman/person with your private life secrets, someone who you don't know that well and shouldn't be e-mailing your private information with like someone in the same company or same business, in this case politics. 

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF : MY SHORT LIST OF MISTRESSES EXPANDING ALL THE TIME!

When I started this blog I had a short list of mistresses and most of them were in the Historical Mistress category but as time goes by more and more mistresses emerge in the news, often because they out themselves by writing books or are written about.  After all, most mistresses are in secret relationships, as secret as those who keep the secret.  After all, we aren't ready for polygamy to be legal.  We're still struggling with gays being allowed to marry legally.

One of the discussion issues about Mistresses is defining who is or is not a Mistress.  MOST OF THE WOMEN WHO ARE CALLED MISTRESSES IN THE PRESS are NOT!  Of all of the modern women who have suffered due to this label is Monica Lewinsky, who was simply in an affair with President William Jefferson Clinton when he was in office, though she may have felt love for him that he didn't have for her.  Strangely, it is his denial of her that has set her apart, and possibly made her unmarriagable.  Every adulterer is not a mistress or mister, and not every mistress is an adulterer!

In History many mistresses of Kings and other Aristocrats were married (some would say Married OFF) or acknowledged financially.  It was considered good for the family.  (An example or two is Mary and Ann Bolyn.)  Some men, including husbands (think Camilla Parker Bowles' husband Charlie) were tolerant or delighted that their women were of interest to men with power and those men with power sometimes sent the husband away on some official duty but often rewarded them. 

These days many mistresses are self supporting.
These days some women are keeping men.
These days some women mistress for a time because it suits their time of life, and move on into marriage or singlehood on purpose.

These days when women have more power over their own lives than ever (though not as much as the feminists would idealize) some are choosing to be with men who cannot or will not marry them.

WHY?

I think it comes down to LOVE.

There isn't the benefits of marriage to a mistress that wives can have, and many a wife is staying in a loveless marriage for one reason or another, often financial.  So whose to throw the first stone at another woman who has financial as well as other interests in a relationship?

Earlier in the year I said that I might go a couple months in 2012 without naming a Mistress of the Month and it never happened because there were too many mistresses in the news to ignore.  This month I'll be focusing on the holidays and I hope you will be too!

2012 : MISSY LOOKS BACK ON THIS YEARS POPULAR POSTS AND THINKS AHEAD TO 2013

I'm not going to elect a MISTRESS OF THE MONTH this month.

Not that there aren't more mistresses to write about!

Instead I decided to look at the Google Blogger stats and write about some of the most popular mistresses and posts over the last year! 

This may surprise you, but Jesse Jackson Sr.'s, Karin Stanford (sometimes the spelling of her given name is Karen and sometimes you see her surname as Stafford but I think Stanford is right) seems to be the most popular! 

As for this blog, MISTRESS MANIFESTO, no other mistress seems to have gotten as many hits!  That makes Karen the most popular mistress that I've included in my pantheon.

Next, when it comes to number of hits is a brief mention of BOB HOPE'S GIRLFRIENDS.  (I'll have to do more on that subject in 2013!)

In 2013 I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO HEAR FROM MORE OF YOU and reach deeper into my mail bag!  I'd love to give a few more people advice - or at least my point of view - but I know that so many of you are in the closet about your alternative lifestyle.  I want to respect that, which is why almost all the mistresses I've written about are public, historical, or otherwise documented persons.  I wouldn't out someone just because they wrote to me!

WE ARE STILL TRYING TO DEFINE "MISTRESS!"

We all seem to agree that a mistress is a kept woman who is involved with a married man and who receives substantial financial support from him, but we all know that a person, male or female, whatever their sexuality, can be a mistress (or mantress) without being involved with a married person.  Some mistresses of very wealthy men will never have to work for a living in their lives, others are kept for a short period of time or are self supporting.

Yes, there are just so many different ways to be a mistress. 

Yet there are some people that the media has or does label "mistress" who just never were.  One of those people is Monica Lewinsky, who had an affair with President Bill Clinton while he was in office that appears to have been a one sided love.  (You can read more about Monica by using the Google search feature installed on this blog!  We can't wait to read the book she's working on!)  A mere affair does not make a mistress!

Perhaps more than anything, being a mistress is a mentality, a way of looking at love and life, a choice for some and fate for others!

A few months back I said that MONICA LEWINSKY was not a mistress to President William "Bill" Jefferson Clinton.   No, their relationship was an affair.  Special to her.  Not so special to Clinton who distanced himself calling her "that woman."  Never mind the age difference and the difference in power.

Today the breaking news is that she will be paid $12 Million for her memoir.  I'm happy for Monica.  She paid an unfair price for her affair, one of those being that if she were not a notorious woman she would likely have found love in all the right places by now.  If she is condemned to singlehood or loneliness (and not everyone who is unpartnered is lonely or even looking for a relationship) then at least allow her to be well off for the rest of her life!

Monica was involved with a married man before Bill Clinton. Still was when she met Bill. Pop Psychology would say that a woman who keeps getting involved with "unavailable" men doesn't want love at all. Only problem is there are so many wives that are married to men who are also "unavailable" in another way - emotionally.

Monica Lewinsky and President Bill Clinton : Monica is called a "mistress" often (it's all over the net) because she had an affair with President William Jefferson Clinton, but I'm here to tell you she was NOT a MISTRESS.

No, she was one of Bill's affairs, that's all, though she was a mistress wannabe or a wife wannabe or well, what exactly did Monica want?

She went with her heart. Her heart went for Bill.

Monica Lewinsky? Mistress potential? Not exactly zilch. Beautiful. (Yes she is!) Educated. (Very!) Well spoken. (All that pressure in court.) High IQ. (Smart if not sensible.) High self esteem. (Did have. Now? The reports are not good.)

Monica began her affair with Bill in 1995 when she was hired as an intern at the White House. How many people get to intern there? Few.

She called it sex - 9 times. She was obsessed with him. (Everyone I know who has met him says he has charm and charisma to spare to this day! Seems the only person who hasn't had him charm their pants off is his wife, Hillary. No I didn't vote for her.) Monica was young and ambitious and turned on by power and him.

I don't know if she thought of it this way or not, but she was also competitive. She could not imagine she would have much to loose and it's that innocence that got her in trouble and her innocence that turned him on.

Caught, he said he did not have sex - not if you don't count oral - with that woman. Well, at least he didn't call her a "girl".

A betrayal.

He was saving his butt and the hell with her.

Frankly I don't blame Bill for trying to hide his personal sexual encounters and terms and conditions of his marriage from the world because I think even public figures should have some privacy. (If every CEO in America was held to the same standards the papers would be full of their exploits but they arn't anymore than stars of stage and screen.) Except that his enemies say this, his affair, interfered in the way he conducted business, the business of running the United States of America.

While being turned on by power is a positive for Monica, and she has since this scandal, posed for Vanity Fair Magazine and graduated from THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS, after trying her talents in the New York fashion business, one of the reasons Monica Lewinsky does not have great mistress potential is that she could not keep her relationship a secret and didn't know who to trust. It was too much for her to do so and she told her so called friend and co-worker (a double wammy) Linda Tripp. Monica misjudged the depth of that friendship and Linda turned into the worlds worst friend, secretly taping conversations (entrapment). Well, the rest is history.

To consider her situation more closely, we have to think of HILLARY CLINTON, now Secretary of State, who decided to forgive her husband after playing the Black Madonna for a while. Bill and Hillary are a Power Couple, two people devoted to furthering each other's careers. No doubt Hillary Clinton decided what was important for her career was to stay married. I don't believe for a moment that she doesn't know she married a Womanizer. That's the situation Monica would have had to face no matter how much longer their affair might have gone on.

Instead Monica faced being judged on the world stage. Comedians like David Letterman made fun of her. You would think she was the first woman who ever had an affair with a married man. Monica became infamous and has been challenged by her reputation ever since. The first woman who gave oral sex.

IT'S TIME TO BACK OFF ON MONICA LEWINSKY! No young woman has paid a higher price for a whirl in 20th century history.

Bill and Hillary Clinton should be ashamed of themselves for allowing Monica to go on trial while they keep going to the Big Offices! Here is something mistresses know too: Bill is not the kind of man who keeps a woman, unless it's totally to his advantage.
