Madam Kelly had been a prostitute herself, as young as the age of ten when she started. She became a Madam who made her prostitutes who worked at her brothel go into debt to her by supplying them fabulous clothes and expensive jewelry and she had no mercy in collecting money owed her. Aspiring actresses and other women who were accepted to work there had their chance to earn far more money than they could anywhere else but that was not always the ultimate goal. Some of them became the Mistresses of these powerful men. But to do so, a man had to "hire her out," pay off the clothes, and ultimately pay off the contract the prostitute had with Madam Kelly.

Excerpt page 68 : Emma was beginning to make friends, and she soon found a protector.  Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh, a spoiled young squire, was characterized by gossip columns as the brothel regular "Sire Harry Flagellum" and "The Sporting Lover." Kelly listed him as Baron Harry Flagellum in a daybook for another of her brothels. He had become interested in Emma and asked to take her for a long-term hire at his house, Uppark, to entertain him and his friends  He would have had to shell out a lot of cash to Kelly to cover Emma's "debts" and the madam's loss of earnings, and he had to agree to buy her clothes.  Many girls, after being rented out, became kept mistresses.  Kelly expected to be able to extract an even larger amount when Fetherstonhaugh demanded Emma's ultimate release.

Emma hoped that Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh might be her escape. In her year or so at Kelly's, Emma had found out about glamour and the kind of tricks to tempt a man's passion, and she had also learned to rely on herself and to hide her emotional needs. Her hard, brilliant exterior hid a secret longing for a man to cherish her, who she could believe loved her for herself.

As I read these passages in Kate William's book about Emma Hamilton, and the women at Madam Kelly, though hundreds of years passed to the days of Hollywood Madam, Heidi Fleiss, I'm reminded of Heidi because she bragged at how well paid and beautiful the women who worked for her as prostitutes were. 

Excerpt page 69 : Emma found herself on long-term hire to a stag party set to last the entire summer....  Fifteen year old Miss Lyon was hired to entertain the host and his guests, serve at dinner, dance, and smile.  She meant to work hard, confident that she would persuade Sir Harry to take her as his long-term mistress. 

Sir Harry was only twenty-six years old. He was good looking, a charming bad boy who was not much interested in study but rather drinking and hunting. Some called him effeminate and author Kate Williams uses the term fluffy headed.  He lived beyond his means and troubled his family.  His house was beautiful and rich and his estate workers were industrious.  Emma had her own cottage and exposed to this level of wealth unlike ever before. Servants - more than one hundred - worked tirelessly to keep it up. Though officially she was hired as a Lady's Maid, the other servants found reason to be jealous and resentful of her position.

In order to be more pleasing to Sir Harry, Emma, still called Emma Lyon, learned to ride horses and became an excellent side-saddle equestrian who accompanied him on the hunt.

After the hunt the men would become boisterous and gluttonous. She would dance for them and sing, giving a performance but feeling personally neglected by Harry.

Emma set her sights on an older, poorer man, Charles Greville, second son of Earl of Warwick and MP for Warwick, in the Midlands, who hated hunting, thirty-two, still unmarried, and not the life of any party.

Unfortunately, Emma's boredom with Harry and unhappiness with her life was further complicated by her pregnancy. Sir Harry was the father.

A START IN THE THEATRE : ACTRESS JANE POWELL INFLUENCED THIRTEEN YEAR OLD EMMA HAMILTON TO DRURY LANE : PORTRAIT MODEL EMMA IS HIRED BY THE TEMPLE OF HEALTH

While a servant in London for the Budd's, the thirteen year old Emma Hamilton met another servant - Jane Powell - who wanted to be an actress and would eventually succeed as one; the surname Powell came to her in marriage. Jane had also been fatherless and the two became best friends. Jane's big break in the theatre came after she attracted a rich patron who arranged for her to graduate from the minor roles she had accomplished on her own. Therefor, she, like Mary Lyon, Emma's mother, had the benefit of being a Mistress. The servant girls enjoyed free events such as parades and fairs and the parties that emerged and they were both fired from the Budd's after staying out all night. There was no security at all in being a servant girl. Meanwhile it is likely that Emma had to grow up fast and had probably lost her virginity as a twelve year old.

Excerpt page 39: Thirteen year old Emma already had the energy, beauty, and self-confidence that would carry her far, but such qualities had a darker underside - an addiction to glamour, a hot temper, and a desire to please by winning attention. There was no way that her life of drudgery could continue: she was too pretty and ambitious. On leaving the Budds, equipped only with a few dresses and one or two trinkets from admirers, Emma headed straight for the Drury Lane theater in Covent Garden, the most sensational spectacle in London. 

Emma didn't start as an actress at Drury Lane. She was a dresser, a maid, carried props - a servant for an actress, though she might have been used in a crowd scene or two.

In the eighteenth century in London, it's estimated one woman in eight worked as a prostitute. Prostitutes were part of the party around the theater scene. The price range for sexual services ranged from a few 18th century cents to thousands of dollars. Emma could not have been innocent of this fact. Author Kate William's description of the prostitution scene is one of street and tavern. It's implied that Emma may have been one of them as a teenager. 

Painters also went looking for models and as it turned out, she was considered a perfect English beauty.

Excerpt page 52: ... She was snatched up by the two greatest portrait painters of the time: bitter rivals George Romney and Joshua Reynolds. Sir Joshua, foremost portrait painter of the age and president of the Royal Academy from 1768 to 1782, was well known for hunting in the brothels of Covent Garden for models, and it seems that he found Emma, perhaps before Romney. His Cupid Unfastening the Girdle of Venus shows a dark-haired, pale-skinned model who looks very much like Emma, her bosom exposed, wearing an almost transparent dress, languishing in bed while Cupid unties her sash... .... Emma appears to have modeled for one of Reynold's greatest paintings, Thais.... Thais being the Mistress of Alexander the Great...

The painting was such a sensation that the public demanded to know who the model was and was identified as "Miss Emily"... Emily hardly the typical name for a prostitute, the name implied a higher status. There is a possibility that already she was a Mistress, to Honorable Charles Greville. It was said that she had sat for the painting at his request.

At the time, according to author Kate Williams, modeling was undesirable work and possibly paid worse than prostitution. Artists were not especially kind to models and there were other painters and paintings which looked a lot like Emma. 

As a result of her new found fame of sorts, Emma got a new gig. James Graham, a London entrepreneur, sex therapist, and showman, who believed in "the power of electricity" hired her for his Temple of Health. The spectacle at his townhouse, where people went for a cure, included electrical shocks, fireworks and explosions, music, and, also glamour girls in flimsy white dresses who danced around the treatment bed. Dancing at the temple is something Emma never denied as she did other suggestions once she was a Mistress to aristocratic men. The Temple featured a cure for infertility and Graham is credited with suggesting that a woman needed to orgasm to become pregnant at a time when many women saw sex as dutiful and only for procreation.

The Temple of Health itself attracted not just husbands and wives, but men and their mistresses. It might have become one more place of low paid prostitution. Emma quickly moved on to a brothel, Madame Kelly's, which was London's most exclusive.

SOPHIA BADDELEY: DISCONNECTED FROM THE REALITIES OF SPENDING AND TOOK ON MULTIPLE LOVERS ASIDE OF LORD MELBOURNE

Missy here!  Lord Melbourne continued to be Sophia's keeper, without any legal contract, generous but not obligated, and then slowly withdrew his presence and his money.  Mrs. Steele, who would someday write the memoir for Sophia Baddeley, tried to curb her spending without effect.  Sophia's fame had become a trap, a lifestyle in which she got no rest from her fans' attentions.  She felt hunted. Page 64:  Sophia now had debts of more than 3000 pounds (180,000 pounds at the time the book was published in 2003).  Although she was still besieged by her admirers,it was not obvious even to her that Melbourne's passion was cooling.  To add to her problems, she found that she was pregnant... although she miscarried soon afterwards.  Nonetheless, the frantic pursuit of pleasure continued unabated. 'Our life was such a continued scene of bustle and dissipation,' wrote Mrs. Steele, ' that I wonder how she looked so well,'

Page 66: Money was not the only temptation in Sophia's way.  She was a woman of strong appetites in every respect.  While Lord Melbourne remained her official protector during this period, there was also a continual stream of unofficial lovers - mostly young officers and undergraduates, neither rich nor well connected - to whom Sophia was attracted for her own sake.  Even Mrs. Steele's disapproval could not keep them away entirely. If anything, this evidence of Sophia's view of her own sexuality as a source of pleasure - rather than just as a commodity to be bartered - was the cause of even greater tension between the two women than were the scores of amorous old aristocrats laying siege to her.

Sophia lost Lord Melbourne.  Though she had been loyal to him in turning others away, she had overspent and was deeply in debt and faced selling her diamonds to make minimal payments.  She also caught him paying attention to another Courtesan who he had been with before his neglected marriage.  She returned to the stage after three years absence.  Her reputation and status were in decline and she had still had the shopaholic's addiction to spending and acquiring things. 

Pages 74-75:  Nonetheless, Sophia's status, in some indefinable way, had declined.  Although she was still receiving an extremely handsome salary - 7 pounds per week the following season, in which she opened as Olivia in Twelfth Night - it was by no means the dizzying sum she had commanded at the height of her powers.  Her desertion by Melbourne had left her vulnerable in areas other than merely financial ones.  Imperceptibly, the grayest of grey areas, the infinitely subtle line between a courtesan, with enough glamour and fashionable status to pick and choose her protectors, and a plain woman of the town (available to more or less anyone so long as the price was right), was slowly beginning to shift."

PAINTINGS and MALE FANTASY LEAD TO PUBLICITY and THE LAVISH LIFE OF A COURTESAN

In a chapter on the real lives of London prostitutes, author Barbara White writes that there's a possibility that Fanny Murray, a very young woman, was infected with venereal disease and taking a cure might have used all her resources and ended her as a streetwalker as a choice, rather than debtor's prison. The descriptions of the conditions in which these women lived suggest that there were very many levels of prostitution, and the lowest were also pickpockets and associating with a rough criminal class. If so, she might have had to 'service' 100 to 200 men a day. It's possible, though again White suggests it might also not be true, that she was at one point suicidal.

This is similar to today's abducted young sex slaves who are trafficked.  It's difficult to believe anyone who survives could be well psychologically. 

But in 1745 her luck changed and she met John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwhich, who had lost a very long term mistress he was happy with when she was murdered. He would go on to have another very long term mistress as well but Fanny and John had their moment, and this association brought her up in the world. (Notes from Page 41NaN)

In 1744, the Earl had started The Divan Club for a small group who were travelers to the Ottoman Empire (Turkey), and which was short-lived. Rumors were that it was not a scholarly gentleman's club but a sex club. A bare-breasted painting which might have been of Fanny Murray - or one of her peer prostitutes - decorated the clubhouse. That an artist was commissioned to paint such a portrait is perhaps indicative of the start of a career in which Fanny would cater to the elite, her time as a Courtesan.

This was a time when gentlemen not only memorialized beauties in art work but also by writing poetry about them and even made lists of the most beautiful women in England to share. (Well, they didn't have the Miss America pageant.) Art, poetry, and lists like these served to promote her as desirable. As men with money came around, Fanny's character became judged as less virtuous(!) as it had been assumed. She did not hesitate to purchase fine things for herself.(Notes from Page 51 Nan)

In the search for truth about Fanny Murray, there is much rumor, much fantasy.

Then a man named Harris came up with Harris List, which was like a 18th century database of prostitutes, and somehow he came up with 400 names.  He listed their names, where they could be found, and what their sexual specialties were. (One wonders how he knew all this.)  In 1747, when she was 19, he included Fanny but it's considered a fabrication.  Fanny M was listed as new to the scene and it was also suggested that she would be ideal for a Jewish man, inferred only a Jew could afford all the things she demanded. She had been in London as a prostitute for at least four years at that point. Was he doing her a favor? Harris may have been a pimp with a 'stable' of 100. He claimed his women had to be 'enrolled' and to undergo medical exams to prove they were disease free and so on. He had a 'club' for women in which, supposedly, a hundred enrolled women drank and awaited a good time.

As a Courtesan with enough money to live lavishly, Fanny was finally in position to choose who she would allow into her life and under what terms. Interestingly, she aimed to help those prostitutes who had not been able to avoid the venereal diseases by patronizing a hospital, Lock Hospital near Hyde Park Corner and it was controversial. I first heard about the situation in Canada on YouTube videos - a couple hours in which Richard Syrette featured Shae Invidiata, who started this nonprofit at the age of 18, when she was first exposed to the realities of prostitution in Hawaii.  Based in Ontario, this is the premier nonprofit working to end sex trafficking in Canada but understand - trafficked Canadians are moved out of Canada. Many years into this quest Shae spoke of the terrible reality and frankly and brought tears to my eyes.  It's because of these interviews that I knew that I had to make MISTRESS MANIFESTO BLOGSPOT part of the solution by making my readers aware.

I listened to these YouTube videos of the Interview with Shae that Richard did TWICE. Be prepared to have your heart break. In this interview we learn that there are (at least) 37 million people - the population of Canada - working as slaves in this world. And the traffickers make more than the profits of Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon combined!  In Canada, you might assume that the people trafficked are all women, but they are 80 percent women and girls. There are South East Asians and Europeans trafficked but 87% of the slaves are Canadians.

Why have criminals decided to use other human's bodies instead of running drugs or selling illegal arms?  Because it is more lucrative.  A BODY CAN BE REUSED so  a Trafficked girl or woman will have sex 15-20 times a day, every day.  On ONE such slave, a trafficker makes $250,000-$300,00 a year.  On a stable of 10 to 20 slaves - well, you do the math.  Who is this criminal?  Often it is a 18-22 year old.

A thirteen year old girl can be the victim of a man, 18- 30 years old usually - who starts out pretending to be her boyfriend, wooing her and grooming her.  A Big Lie is that he has a job for her in the city, away from rural poverty.

On the first date he will ask questions to be sure she can be victimized, questions about her family. He will make a girl feel loved and special.  She will sleep with him. Then he'll ask her to sleep with a friend of his too. Or he may tell her that she has to pay him back for all that money he spent on her. He may film her having sex and threaten to show friends, parents, the world.  He will get her on alcohol or drugs to further control her.

BUT THE TRAFFICKED GIRL MAY STILL BE LIVING AT HOME!

There are 50,000 MISSING CHILDREN IN CANADA. 800,000 IN THE UNITED STATES.

Shae Invidiata states that if a body isn't found in a week or so, she feels sure, after working at this cause for 17 years, that the missing person is being trafficked.

Missy here: Many women have only one or two lovers in their entire lives and these are men who love them. Imagine what it is to have more men violating your body in one day than a woman might have lovers she chooses in her entire lifetime.

SEX TRAFFICKING : MORE PEOPLE ARE SEX TRAFFICKED TODAY THEN THERE WERE EVER AFRICAN SLAVES IN AMERICA

Remember when you were a girl? Pubescent? A teenager?  

Innocent. Having crushes. Dreams of romance. Poetry. Love Letters. Diaries. The boy across the classroom. Exchanging glances. Exchanging notes. The Valentines. First love. The hopes and wishes for True Love Forever.

This month I'm featuring a special subject, SEX TRAFFICKING, a form of slavery.  I want my readers to know about this scourge of abuse that is often perpetrated on people below the age of consent, which is 18. Even 14 year olds living with their parents can be trafficked. I'm writing this post having read, listened, and watched on this subject until I felt sick. This month's writing has been the most emotionally draining I've ever experienced as the author of MISTRESS MANIFESTO BLOGSPOT.

I want everyone to have CHOICES and to give consent that is informed with self knowledge and truth. I know sometimes as adults we make choices that are unconventional. Slavery, be it as a laborer or as a prostitute, is as far from choice as you can get.  

Although some women are involved in luring others into slavery, the evil opportunist and user of slaves is usually a man. And there would be no market for human beings to be used in horrible ways, if it were not for mostly men customers. So I have to say it, sometimes I hate men.

Thankfully, there are men's groups who are opposing trafficking.  Because of them, and because we all know good people, we know, no not all men are like this. 

Actually, we need to stop saying and thinking, "All men are alike."

The ideas that all men are beasts without self control, that men must have sex or they will rape, and the hatred behind the abuse of women, must stop.***

And yes, it starts with us being part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

I will be posting links to HELP and I encourage you to do some research as well and find the people and organizations local to you.

Did you know that CALIFORNIA, because of its ethnic diversity, its airports and transportation systems, and it's population, is a prime destination for traffickers to take a child to work, and even to be SOLD and taken to other countries?  Did you know traffickers use DISNEYLAND as a perfect place to pass around children?

I want all my readers who want this abominable criminality to stop to donate to at least one of the organizations I'm profiling this month. I want you to talk to the children you care for and about. I want you to talk to your teens. I want you teachers to get programs going in your schools - have someone come out and talk to your class.

And I want everyone to light a candle - in memory of someone who is being sex trafficked. The people who are turned into slaves won't last long.  It's estimated that most die within 7 years.

This month is my effort to speak up.

Some say she had Jewish heritage.  Someone else pointed out to me that perhaps she was Armenian due to the common Armenian surname Kasperian - or even Russian.  Mizzi was probably a nickname. THE JEFFREY EPSTEIN SEX TRAFFICKING SCANDAL - HOW YOUNG IS TOO YOUNG TO HAVE SEX?

My Dearest Readers,

Like many of you I have been riveted by the breaking news of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.  To reiterate, a multimillionaire financier named Jeffery Epstein - possibly a billionaire - who owned a private island and many properties - and who previously admitted to being a sex offender but had bargained to freedom - died in a jail cell where he awaited trial, having been considered a flight risk. There was a possible suicide attempt or he may have been the victim of attempted murder a couple weeks ago at that facility. There is a question about why no one noticed he was hanging himself this time. The autopsy report has not been revealed as I write this*, but it's likely he committed suicide in that cell rather than go through the trial - which promised to be excruciating and on the world stage - or rat out his friends. 

Brave women, now adults, have come forth to testify against him and this case would not have been opened if it were not for unsealed documents  - thousands of pages - which would implicate many other rich and important men - and of course they deny it. The FBI descended upon the island he owned where some of the underage women - 17, 16, 15, 14... went years ago and where they say they were ordered to have sex with generally much older wealthy men as "sex slaves." Some of these women - and this is how sex trafficking works - were likely recruited by other women for this purpose. The recruiters generally do not tell the whole truth of what will happen to the girls when they find them. They'll lure a high school girl who needs some money into "being nice" to their benefactor. Epstein's private jet was called by those who knew him "The Lolita Express."

Conspiracy theories are abundant, not only in the media and on independent "journalist" YouTube channels, but in the conversations everywhere I go, with President Donald Trump managing to sling Hillary and Bill Clinton - again - with insinuations of involvement. (Jeeze! He already won the election - forget it already!)  One person said it all "stinks to high heaven" and I sure do agree.

At another time I may be able to upload a couple YouTube videos that I feel ought to be on this post. Be aware some videos about this scandal have warnings of Graphic Content - or rated X. I will name a couple that impressed me here: Search for Kimberly Mehlmnan Orczco  "Hidden in Plain Sight" - CBS news.  She's a sex trafficking expert discussing the case.  And the Miami Herald  - "Years Late, Epstein victims discuss the lasting Impact."  (A woman journalist broke the case against the man long ago.)  I also urge you to read the posts here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO BLOGSPOT that are about sex trafficking (and prostitution), using the search feature, or by going through my archives.  

One article I read stated that Epstein told people that the taboo against sex with under the legal age (18) was just a cultural thing.  It IS a cultural thing, but that doesn't make it legal. No doubt about it - at least in my mind - Epstein was a sex addict - and he was empowered by getting away with a lot. Some, if not all, of the people who spent time with him must have known he liked too young women. Was no one at least suspicious?  

Attorneys for the alleged victims want to proceed with suits against other, alive people and Epstein's estate. The French Government is looking in to it. I suspect other governments will follow. Sadly, the involvement of Prince Andrew - once married to Sarah Ferguson - and the media rumors that they may soon remarry - even seems suspicious to me. But being at a party Epstein threw or walking in the park talking to him does not mean Andrew actually was a pedophile. It's possible that Epstein's "girls" were not identified by their real names or ages to all the men they say they had sex with.

It's true that some cultures still practice arranged marriage and child marriage - but not ours, not today. I frankly think no one should marry until they have experienced supporting themselves and living independently from their parents/family for at least a year (and being Kept does not count), but being married at 14 or 16 was legal, generally with parental permission, in the past history of the United States. 

Also, we also all know that some rock stars became notorious for having underage groupies. Are they going to be implicated or called out for this years later? 


SEX TRAFFICKING, being forced into PROSTITUTION, is not the same as MARRIAGE, which is usually a commitment between two people. It's not the same as a woman going after a rock star for a trophy experience. I realize there are a lot of circumstances that beg us to realize how complicated it can get that blur the issue but consider.

Being loved - having your heart in it -  being a sexual adventurer - having a choice - is not the same as taking a job as a masseuse and being raped by someone who you have no relationship with and see as a client. It's not the same to be 14 or 16 and have a boyfriend of the boy next door who goes off to college a couple years before you and who probably comes to your house with your parent's approval to go on dates. (Elvis Presley had Priscilla's parent's permission to go live with him as a school girl. The joke goes he raised her the way he wanted her to be.) Technically if you're under 18 and have a college age boyfriend and have sex with him, your parents can have him charged with statutory rape but who does that?  Obviously teenagers are having sex with other teenagers or we wouldn't be offering contraception and abortion or have so many children born to them. Close ages as is typical with teenagers and young adults in relationships and actual relationships are not the same as having a pimp or being given over to much older - often married - men to have the kind of sex they want to have when they want it.

SEX SLAVES or SEX TRAFFICKED people - be they underage or over the legal age of 18, whatever their gender or sexuality - have NO CHOICE. Don't argue with me that everyone has a choice all the time or that our lives and their outcome are all about what we want to manifest. (Tell that to people who experienced concentration camps under the Nazis!) Their inexperience in life, their fear of what will happen to them if they tell and reach out for help or escape, especially if the person(s) who have them entrapped are powerful, wealthy, and connected, and often their emotional confusion, and the abuse, keep them where they are, alive not well. I believe that there are many people who are not actually ready for relationships or sex though much older than 18, but the law says 18 is the age of adulthood and permission. It's also the age to vote, register for the draft and to be drafted if needed, to drink alcohol, and the age of consent.  

There probably isn't a woman alive who doesn't know someone who has been molested while underage. Molested can mean a variety of activities but lets start with groping as sexual assault. It feels horrible when you get your breasts grabbed or your crouch grabbed as a adult, which has happened to me four times, twice in recent years while just walking down the street, once when I was walking out the door of a dance club, and once when I feel asleep on public transport. (And I was dressed a bit sexy only for the dance club.) I've experienced sexual harassment on interviews. Friends of mine have stories of being date raped, even violently, and yet almost no one filed police complaints and the trial for one friend was a travesty, with her rapist testifying that she needed to be beat up to have orgasms; years of therapy and she's still not able to date. It gets to the point where some people are no longer interested in relationships, in dating, in sex, in men. 

Seriously.

* As of this morning, August 15th, I understand that the coroner is not ready to say Epstein's death was the result of suicide.  Certain neck bones of his are broken, which also happens due to strangling.

*** As of September 25, 2019 though officially considered suicide, there are still those who differ and think Epstein was murdered.  More women have come forth and are giving individual and collective interviews. It has been said that psychiatrists, gynecologists, and others in the medical profession, treated the sex slaves and the numbers of people implicated grows. Shame on them.

It was called Wild West Vices. It didn't mention Lola Montez or a single mistress, but I thought my readers would find it interesting.  It covered sex workers, sex trafficking, sex slaves,  peep shows, casual prostitution, opium dens, cocaine addictions. Cocaine was even put in a popular wine called CoCoWine.

I'm replacing it with the one below, May 2021 which is about Colorado....

PROSTITUTION IN HOLLYWOOD DURING THE MGM - LOUIS B. MAYER ERA

According to E.J. Fleming, author of "THE FIXERS," a book that focuses on M.G.M. during the Louis B. Mayer era, when Edgar "The Bulldog" Mannix and his gentleman sidekick, Lee Strickland, did the cover-ups for the messy personal lives of actors, often due to their affairs, Hollywood had a number of houses of prostitution that were well known. 

Was Hollywood hyper-sexual?  Were the studios tied into these houses of prostitution where many a woman who came to Hollywood to be a star found employment?

Who used these prostitutes?  No doubt some of the regular customers were men in the business, including stars.

In the Chapter called The Golden Age of Trouble, he mentions a few of the more famous houses.

According to Fleming, Madame Billie Bennet ran a Greek Revival style mansion above Sunset that had 14 suites, a restaurant, and a bar.  She looked and spoke like Mae West and the studios lent Mae's actual costumes.  In the basement there was a wardrobe mistress, make-up men and hairdressers!  Her prostitutes were look-alike of actresses so that a John could hire someone who looked like Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Alice Faye, Carol Lombard, Claudette Colbert, Ginger Rogers, or Marlene Dietrich and indulge his fantasy of being with that star.  (Greta Garbo and Katherine Hepburn were never copied.) Some were "surgically enhanced." 

Similarly, there was T and M Studio, where there were "6 month option girls"  which means actresses who were hired for training by a studio and paid for 6 months, a time to prove themselves so their option could be renewed.  Not saying that Marilyn Monroe worked there, but she was one of those girls, and some biographies I've read about her suggest that she did work as a prostitute for a while.  Supposedly Groucho Marx was a regular customer.  

The House of Frances, owned by Lee Francis.  She had been a prostitute herself in  in San Francisco and Reno and then moved to LA where she owned several houses but her biggest was at 8439 Sunset Blvd.  She paid a lot of money to local officials and police, over 40% of her net and allowed the vice squad to "raid," but never arrest anyone.  She kept Russian caviar and French champagne and gave favors to reporters to keep her out of the paper.  By 1930 she bragged that she could satisfy any request and so to satisfy the request of a Middle Easterner she provided 100 blondes, who died all their hair blonde.  The prostitutes made about $1000 a week.  And the Johns were also Joans, such as Jean Harlow who is said to have paid $500 to take a customer home.  In the lobby of the five star hotel, stars like Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable might read the paper and drink coffee, while maybe Errol Flynn went upstairs.
In the late 1930's Madame Frances began refusing to pay bribes and on January 16, 1940 her house was raided, there were dozens of embarrassing arrests, and she was put out of business.

I hate to say this, but a prostitute working for a time in one of these places probably made much more than the option girls, even the starlets who got small part,

Meanwhile, there was a lot of sex, even orgies, for free to the participants.  According to Fleming, Edmund Goulding had a Beverly Hills mansion where movies stars and call girls even worked in choreographed Sadio- Masochistic sessions.  In Louise Brooks' 1978 interview, she mentioned the place.

There are so very many more options in education and employment than these not so distant days, but just recently have actresses begun to complain about sexual harrassment and rape by film studio executives and people employed in the business, and by the way, I believe Corey Feldman about boys being molested by some of them.

CONSIDER THE SLAVE

 This particular poster advertising the sale of Negroes is actually fairly respectful compared to some I've seen.  Notice that the people enslaved are called men, women, boys, girls, and called negroes (a term that some older black people still use for themselves today).
On some slave sale posters, men are called bucks, women are called wenches, and children are called pickininnys, names that distances them from other races, names that emphasis breeding.

As you consider this, consider that "White Slavery,"  also called Sex Slavery or Sex Trafficking, currently involves more girls (and some boys) than ever there were Slaves imported from Africa.

PAID FOR by RACHEL MORAN is DEVASTATING MEMOIR about HER LIFE THROUGH PROSTITUTION

One of the questions I have - we have - here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO BLOGSPOT - is the question of sex for pay and how that may or may not relate to being a Mistress.  I feel that the stereotype of a Mistress is that she is much like a Belle Epoch Courtesan, which is to say, if we consider our Mistress of the Month Valtesse de la Bigne and her 19th century contemporaries as an example, a high class prostitute.  However, this is a stereotype that I do not believe fits the contemporary Mistress who is more likely to have a relationship founded in a love affair with one married man (at least one at a time!) and consider herself to be married to him even if he's legally married to another.  One of the purposes of this blog is to look at the grey areas.  For there is an argument that relationships, including legal marriage that might accommodate a Mistress, are of choice, and that not everyone is a serial monogamist.  While I believe it is true that sexual attraction is a strong reason for becoming Kept, I also do not think that sex keeps a relationship together.  More has to happen and that more is often love.

The word "devastating" in the title of this post, is not hyperbole. I read this one by listening to an e-book and the reading was intense, as was the sophistication of the understanding Rachel Moran came to about herself, her life, and her profession. This woman's testimony will grab your heart and cut it into little pieces, as you read about the terribly impoverished childhood she had in a large family with parents who were both mentally ill.  You can feel that ache.
Listen up, please!
Like so many of today's teenage runaways and street children, Rachel's entry into prostitution was one of survival out of homelessness. She left an intolerable home life (which did not include being molested by her dad).  At fifteen she got a boyfriend, also a homeless person, and well, she saw the logic in becoming a prostitute, which she was by age fifteen, and she says telling men how old she was excited them.  For two years she managed to limit her sexual repertoire with paying men so that she did not have intercourse with them, but you will be riveted to hear of some of the perversions she encountered and complied with, including S and M relationships.  It was dehumanizing and she lost her self worth.
While there are a full range of sexualities to identify with, including asexuality, and some prostitutes are going to, like Valtesse, move forward into being the Mistress of just one man or a wife, Rachel Moran has a mission.  To let the world know that "real men" do not pick up prostitutes, even if they are called "call girls" or "escorts," or "exotic dancers."  She is a brave woman, and she has achieved freedom from her past as best as she can, after years of having her lack of self esteem reinforced through degradation.  Her advocacy against legalization of prostitution, includes the honest of this book, the many interviews she has done, videos ... in 1998 at age 22 she got out of the life.
