"TO HIS COY MISTRESS" : A LOVE POEM BY ANDREW MARVELL - ENGLAND 1681

"TO HIS COY MISTRESS" : A LOVE POEM BY ANDREW MARVELL - ENGLAND 1681

Had we but world enough and time,

This coyness, lady, were no crime.

We would sit down, and think which way

To walk, and pass our long love’s day.

Thou by the Indian Ganges’ side

Shouldst rubies find; I by the tide

Of Humber would complain. I would

Love you ten years before the flood,

And you should, if you please, refuse

Till the conversion of the Jews.

My vegetable love should grow

Vaster than empires and more slow;

An hundred years should go to praise

Thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze;

Two hundred to adore each breast,

But thirty thousand to the rest;

An age at least to every part,

And the last age should show your heart.

For, lady, you deserve this state,

Nor would I love at lower rate.

But at my back I always hear

Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near;

And yonder all before us lie

Deserts of vast eternity.

Thy beauty shall no more be found;

Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound

My echoing song; then worms shall try

That long-preserved virginity,

And your quaint honour turn to dust,

And into ashes all my lust;

The grave’s a fine and private place,

But none, I think, do there embrace.

Now therefore, while the youthful hue

Sits on thy skin like morning dew,

And while thy willing soul transpires

At every pore with instant fires,

Now let us sport us while we may,

And now, like amorous birds of prey,

Rather at once our time devour

Than languish in his slow-chapped power

Let us roll all our strength and all

Our sweetness up into one ball,

And tear our pleasures with rough strife

Through the iron gates of life:

Thus, though we cannot make our sun

Stand still, yet we will make him run.

Missy here!

The term Mistress was used the way we use the term 'girlfriend'
and didn't necessarily mean a woman who was kept, or even a lover - though possible.
Simply the woman this poem was written for was not the man's lawfully wedded wife.

A LITTLE PRESENT FOR NO SPECIAL REASON - YOU WERE THINKING OF THEM WHILE AWAY

If you started dating someone, giving them an expensive gift may be inappropriate. If you spend too much, such as on jewelry with precious stones, they may even feel obliged to reject the gift.  The key here is to gift a person you want to warm up a romance with by choosing something nice that shows that you were thinking of them while away - out of town - on a vacation - on business. Have it in a box with some tissue and a simple ribbon. No need to go crazy on wrapping and bows. It's a little something - a flirt.

I like things you can buy at museum stores.  A book on an artist they like...  A scarf... a plastic dinosaur?  Please no postcards or tiny boxes of chocolate.

FUNNY VALENTINES

There are many kinds of Valentines you can send. Flirting is not serious.  So send a FUNNY Valentine.  This lets a person know you're interested but doesn't put pressure on them.  And the best way to avoid making them feel pressured is to give them a Valentine like you would when you were in grade school. If you can, choose a vintage valentine from when they themselves were in grade school, which will have a tinge of sentimental value.  (Got that?  If they were born in 1960, aim for 1965 - 1968!) Luckily there are Valentines all over the Internet that you can print out in color.

How will he or she know if you just gave them the Valentine because you're giving them out to all your friends.  They don't.  Which is good.

DANCING IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO WHISPER

Seek out the places in your area that hold dances. Slow dances. Not loud discos or parties. Perhaps a country club?  You don't need to be a champion in ballroom to hold on to someone - not too tight - not to close - but close enough for you to smell their scent and they, yours.  Dancing close gives you the opportunity to make eye contact, and you should.  Take this opportunity to whisper some sweet words.  "You smell good."  "You look so handsome/beautiful tonight." "I'm having a good time. I'm so glad you invited me!"  "I want to stay a while longer, but I'm looking forward to going home." "Save the last dance for me!"

Compliments such as these can get you everywhere.

THE SHORT BUT SWEET MASH NOTE

A mash note is not a love letter, it's just a note.

You do not have to be in love.  You do have to have a crush.

You might slip someone one of these:

Or...

Think of three things you honestly like about a person.

Then write something that is true, something like this:

I like your easy laugh,  that sparkle in your eyes.  When are you going to ask me out?

You can fold your note up like you did in junior high. You can put it in a tiny envelope spritzed with your cologne or perfume. The main thing is to pass it off to the person you're flirting with. Be brave. There must be some way to do that without anyone noticing?

What's this? They will think as they unfold...

FLIRTING 101 : MISTRESS MANIFESTO'S FLIRTING ISSUE

Yes, my romantic readers, this month we are going to explore FLIRTING. I'll start out by admitting to you that I love to flirt!  Flirting can be fun and that's the best way to take it, as fun, to not read too much into it. Of course, it depends on what you say or what you do, what you're communicating with your flirt. Flirting can be just the thing that gets you noticed, signals to someone that you are interested, or that can lead to ROMANCE.  If you're in a relationship, it can keep the spark alive.

If you are already in a relationship, well, don't stop flirting.  If you've never flirted - start.

Everyone wants to feel noticed, beautiful, special.

This month is going to be full of information on flirting.

I'll have some good ideas for you.

It's up to you to follow through.

Let me know what happens!

HE FORGETS HER BIRTHDAY and VALENTINES BUT IS GENEROUS FOR NO GOOD REASON : SHOULD SHE BE CONCERNED? : QUESTIONS FOR MISSY

QUESTION FOR MISSY

Missy,

I've been having an affair with a married man for almost two years. I'm upset because he forgets my birthday and he forgets Valentine's Day.  When we first met, my birthday was a couple weeks away.  I told him about it because he called wanting to meet up and I said I had birthday plans with my friends. I didn't expect a gift so early on. This year however, I was in tears. "Michael" is generous otherwise. He has shown up with flowers for no good reason.  He sometimes brings me a gift from his travels. Am I wrong to expect a special gift for these special days? My friends say if he was at all serious about me there is no way he would forget like this.

Mandy

Alabama

ANSWER FROM MISSY

Mandy,

Through the years I've met many a wife who has an "unromantic " husband who also fails to acknowledge their special days forgetting, ignoring, or not prioritizing their birthday, anniversary, or Valentine's Day. These men are hardworking and otherwise financially supportive. They are good men without any sentimentality. One woman told me that when her father bought her mother a new frying pan as a birthday gift, she was so mad she got in the car and kept driving, not snapping out of her funk until she found herself in Vegas! She stayed there a couple days before returning.  Did he do better the next year?  No!

I personally want to be honored on special days, so it would be difficult for me to deal with such a person.  I'm the type who goes shopping for a little something for a man and has it wrapped and set aside in case he gifts me, not wanting to be caught without a gift to give as well. So, check in with yourself on your personal tolerance and if this is an issue for you, break with him.

Do you expect expensive gifts?

I personally do not think expensive gifts are appropriate for early or not serious relationships.  What do you mean by serious?  Do you have gift-giving and receiving tied in with how serious he is about you? Do you expect him to leave his wife for you? Have you talked about it?

Here is what I think you need to do.  Call a time out on this relationship.  Get busy with your life as an unmarried woman. There is no reason to be especially loyal, faithful, or obligated to wait around when the other person has a wife, unless you want to share a man, and many women do, for a while. You can date.  You might meet someone better to your liking.

Next time your birthday comes around, treat yourself to a couple days out of town with your friends.

If he finds he misses you and can't live without you, it's time for him to declare himself and take action.

I wish you the best, Mandy!

PERFECT GIFTS FOR THE SWEETHEART MISTRESS

Here is my 2021 Guide to the Perfect Gift For the Sweetheart Mistress

If it should be gift-wrapped, try to do it  yourself.

If she is traditional, flowers, chocolates, and loving cards will do. Try to provide beautiful and expensive ones, and give her favorites, if you know what they are. The language of roses is that yellow is for friendship, pink is for affection, and red is for romantic love - the deeper the love the deeper the color.  But you know, roses have thorns and aren't the symbol of love for no reason, so consider a bouquet of flowers with no thorns, flowers that have a scent.  Avoid those scentless long stemmed roses. Cut flowers from your own garden or pick them from the fields - that is, if you are sure you aren't picking in an ecology sensitive area.

Music, in sound of music in these days of downloads, is not so adjustable but some old style stereo-systems that play vinyl are amazing, so avoid the tinny player and give her a sound system. Excellent earphones are also be a happy gift.  Caution: Please don't gift anyone music that has trashy or abusive to women lyrics. If you must error, error on the Old School side. The Temptations, for instance.

An upgrade of her cell phone, especially if hers is more than two years old.

Jewelry.  There are only two kinds of rings gifted.  Friendship rings which can be or include semiprecious stones and be outsized, or proposal rings.  Therefore, I think it best, if you are not intending to marry this other person just yet, to avoid the gifting of rings.  However, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, are good romantic gifts.  Birthstone jewelry is for birthdays.  However rubys and amethysts, all white, clear, and pink and gold toned jewelry is perfect for the season and the Valentine's Day.  So if you have the money, a pink diamond set in pink gold can be terrific. Consider her first initial.

Create original poetry, even if it is silly and rhymes.  Sign it "Your Secret Admirer."

Covid-19 restrictions have made things difficult on those who are not partnered and living in, but, depending on your situation, a special delivery that is not U.S. Mail, UPS, Amazon, or any other usual service, can be a wonderful surprise.  If there is a good place to safely leave it, ask a friend to take over a crystal vase of flowers and leave them on her porch or take over a sumptuous meal ordered from a good restaurant.

Avoid gift cards.  Giving one communicates that you have no idea what a person might like because you've spent no time getting to know them.

Here's hoping that next year is not so restrictive!

PLATONIC LOVE? ARE YOU IN A PLATONIC LOVE RELATIONSHIP?

Image result for public domain lesbian valentinesSLATE: HUMAN INTEREST: ORIGINS OF PLATONIC LOVE  by Juliet Lapidos

EXCERPTS:
The Florentine scholar Marsilo Ficino coined the term armor platonicus (Latin for "Platonic Love") in the 15th century.  He had in mind Plato's Symposium, in which Socrates describes a possible ascent from base desire to high-minded contemplation - a "ladder"? with love for a beautiful person at the bottom, and love of Beauty itself at the top.  (Step by step: Love of a beautiful body, love for all beautiful bodies, love for the beauty of laws, love for the beauty of knowledge, and the love of Beauty itself).  Fincini Christianized the concept, interpreting the final Beauty as a reference to God.  He further asserted that true lovers are drawn to each other's divine souls" The passion of a lover is not quenched by the mere touch or sight of a body," he wrote, "for it does not desire this or that body, but desires the splendor of the divine light shining through bodies, and is amazed and awed by it."

MALE FEMALE MASCULINE FEMININE HETEROSEXUAL HOMOSEXUAL BISEXUAL TRANSSEXUAL : MORE LABELS THAN EVER

This Valentine month here at Mistress Manifesto BlogSpot, I pause a bit from the more usual Mistress of the Month format to look at a special topic... gender and sexuality.

Do you have a Valentine who isn't heterosexual?

There are more ways to label yourself - and others - than ever. You no longer have to be or choose male or female, heterosexual (straight) or homosexual (gay) or bisexual (excited by both male and female persons) or pansexual (whomever turns you on.) There are MANY labels to describe how you experience yourself in your body and what turns you on and one of those does not include the body.

In keeping my promise to myself and my readers, there won't be anything pornographic in my posts or links. Should I receive comments, I hope some of you will have some suggestions for Mistress of the Month (or Mantress of the Month, a term I came up with for Kept Men) who are in relationships less conventional that the Classic Mistress. Do you know of someone who is perhaps Transgender and being Kept?  (Send me links to books, articles, media...)

Is it possible that the reason Mistresses of the female heterosexual variety are the most known is because as women not fitting a traditional role they are the most scandalous?  Is this a sexist bias?

I want to help you explore these gender and sexuality possibilities because they open up the definition of Mistress; when I hear of a Woman Keeping a Man, which is rarely compared to a Man Keeping a Woman, it's almost always a heterosexual relationship and with that come notions such as traditional roles and "role reversals."

I've known of Older Gay Men Keeping Much Younger Gay men but there seems not to be many publications on that topic. Is that because it's more common in the gay world and being gay is more scandalous than being Kept?

I find labels only useful when you're seeking one and then only temporarily. Labels can be like a diagnosis. People can be self limiting using labels because once you declare yourself, you're still dealing with other people's expectations and stereotypes. So is claiming to be Pansexual a best option?

An example of how labeling can hurt your psychology? I was introduced to a friend's boyfriend and instead of saying his name and what he does for a living, he said "I'm HIV."  Not I have HIV but AM!  This diagnosis was no doubt life-changing for the man, but he was and is so much more!  OK, those two declared themselves gay long before they were involved with each other.

I never knew what to think of another couple because the more masculine person, genetically male, kept saying he was NOT gay though he was involved with another man who declared he WAS gay for years. Perhaps Bisexual might have been a more realistic assumption for him because he once had a girlfriend?  Does that leave the option open that before you die you might find a woman attractive?

I'm more of an advocate for your personal privacy about your sexuality than not at a time when people are confusing being Candid with being Honest and Honestly with Transparency and so many people have made themselves public figures in a desire to be popular or famous who aren't even celebrities. I still think it's none of the business of your employer, for instance, what you do sexually or with whom. It's not professional to be talking about your personal sexual adventures or the details of your relationships at work or in your profession.  (The time to mention your commitment to your boss is upon your engagement (if it's in the papers) or by invitation to your wedding when you might have to change insurance.  Until then, don't take anyone on a date to the office party!)  I guess I still think there are situations were Coming Out is not a good idea. After all, you might change your mind or have an experience you never thought you would.

To research for this month I encountered lots of information on the internet that I want to share with you.  I'll also try to have some fun with this topic and give my opinions.  After all, we can't always be serious.
