Update February 4, 2020 Listened to a recent Interview of Edward Snowden on YouTube in which he was asked about his personal life, which of course includes Lindsey. He called her the love of his life and was entirely honorable in his thankfulness that she had stuck by him through everything. Notable was that he said there wasn't actually a wedding but rather some paperwork was signed. This leads me to think they had a civil union in Russia. He said someday there would be an actual wedding. The one thing I disagree with is his idea that Lindsey had been portrayed as a sexy pole dancer (or stripper) when this was actually a popular form of exercise for women these days. I've seen many images that Lindsey herself designed, posed for, took with a camera, and posted and very many of them are suggestive and playing with sexuality. She has an athletic dancers body but the same photos taken by a more voluptuous figure would undoubtedly be considered even more sexy. - Missy

Update September 17, 2019: In May of 2017 - a little more than two years ago - I elected Lindsay Mills, the beautiful dancer, photographer, blogger, and world traveler, and long time "girlfriend" of Edward Snowden, self exiled in Russia, as an Honorary Mistress of the Month.
*****
Along with the publication of Edward Snowden's new book, called Permanent Record, in interviews Edward called Lindsey his wife. According to reports in The Guardian as well as Russian media - TASS - It turns out they married two years ago - date unknown. Edward says he met Lindsay online when he was 22 years old. He says she is the love of his life. After a courtship of over a decade - interrupted due to his whistle blowing and self imposed exile in Russia - the couple is married. Snowden reportedly lives in Moscow and previously news services reported the lived together - but also that Lindsey was a world traveler - suggesting she was not in Moscow all the time. Before I posted this update I learned that the United States is suing Edward Snowden for the contents of his book are supposed to reveal more secrets. It's my opinion he will never be back in the United States in his lifetime, at least not willingly. I hope he can move on to France or Germany as he once hoped simply because I personally feel I could not live in Russia myself. I also hope he and Lindsay will continue to love one another throughout this lifetime. I'd love to know if she is staying in Russia and if she has applied for citizenship there.
Everyone needs love. And if it were not for the extraordinary and historic scandal attached to Snowden, I'd think of them as having a rather typical techie meets artiste relationship.
To me their relationship proves that Mistresses do sometimes get to marry the men they love. They are not always "homewreckers" nor are they always women used to get through a man's divorce and then thrown to the curb. Though the word Mistress gets used (and misused) to define many kinds of relationships, in particular celebrity driven media tends to out women who've had as little as a one-nighter as "Mistresses," the idea that a woman is only a Mistress if she is involved with a Married Man and that adultery is a component is out. Lindsay's mysterious financial means is and was compelling as is and was her ability to travel with and without Edward.

CO CO CHANEL - NAZI and SPY or SOCIETY WOMAN in LOVE?
*A version of the book is subtitled "Nazi Agent" Was her
"Secret War" to keep her business?
Gabriella "CoCo" Chanel
1882 - 1971
In June of 2011, I elected CoCo Chanel, as Mistress of the Month. Here she is again, this time as a possible spy for Nazi Germany. She grew up in a convent where she'd been left as a child when her mother died by a father who didn't want his children. Her way out of being the equivalent of a foster child who had to make it alone was to sing for her supper, and become a Mistress. Lovers financed her attempts at business, as a hat maker and then as a revolutionary and renown fashion designer who became wealthy from sales of her signature perfume Chanel No. 5 and had over 2500 employees, mostly women, when the Nazis took over Paris. She never had a marriage or children herself, but she was generous to her family, the education of her sister's children. She also is known to have financed men she was interested in, having achieved independence and unusual success "for a woman."
Chanel succeeded through enterprise and creativity, and though she rose up in society to have both the exiled Duke of Windsor and his wife, the Duchess Wallis Simpson, and hero Winston Churchill as friends.
The author of this book, Hal Vaughan, exposes her relationship with spy Baron Hans Gunther Von Dincklage, called Spatz, and we wonder how much did she know. I don't believe she ever forgot what it was to be impoverished, orphaned, or living in the class system that made men choose more suitable well born women as wives. But consider CoCo often said and was quoted as believing that it was essential for a woman to have a man in her life, to be in love, to love. She had many disappointments and heartbreaks before she ever met Spatz, a charming younger man living in the South of France, with a half Jewish wife, who came across as more Upper Crust English than German. She was in her fifties and he in his forties when they became involved.
As you may know from reading my blog, I read every book I feature from cover to cover, and in the last year or so have been reading some books as audio books. Doing so has opened the time I have to read and I especially love it when an author reads their own work. However, I must tell you upfront that this book as an audio book was a total turn off. The woman reader (Why when the author is a man?) had such condemnation of CoCo in her sneering attitude and intonations that I couldn't bear to continue to listen to her. It gave the impression that this "International Best Seller" existed condemn and give an unbalanced account of CoCo. I winced hearing this aggressively negative voice.
I decided to give reading the old fashioned text a try, and found this was a story that built and had much research to it. But I was not swayed to the point that I might think that CoCo should have been tried as a war criminal just because while designing costumes very briefly in Hollywood in 1931 (including Gloria Swanson) that she noticed it was run by Jews.
That Hollywood films were and are made by Jewish people, particular male studio heads was in fact true in her era (and still is dominated by Jewish people), and perhaps this truth spoken is misinterpreted as Anti-Semitism. For if she really were, would she have lent her name? Or is it being implied that she herself was just greedy and irresponsible to her contract? If she was truly anti-Semitic then she probably would have not accepted the commission from a Jewish studio boss. She was paid very well - a million - but didn't need the money. If truly anti-Semetic she probably would not have made a deal on her perfume with a Jewish company in the first place. (Her costumes were not successful and she considered Hollywood too glittery and false.)
Nor do I ever find convincing generalizations that Catholics and Christians were raised to believe that Jews killed Jesus. I never heard that personally from any pulpit or in school or out of the mouth of anyone I knew; some people may have thought that but then they are ignorant of the Roman-occupied culture during Jesus' time.
That she felt ripped off by the Jewish-owned perfume company that made most of the profit on her perfume, is true. She legally battled with them but eventually let them buy her out, so to speak. She might have done so of any business partner. In a 1924 deal to have her perfume produced to meet great demand, she soon felt swindled and spent the next 25 years saying so, but her perfume is what provided her most of her wealth.
What I wanted was the cold hard facts of CoCo's involvement with Nazi's sans the Baron. Can be believe he admitted to her that he was a spy and asked her to work with him? That the Baron was a special man to her as a woman, that's where CoCo may have been played. He was known to be a seducer. He was there in the South of France to infiltrate society that lived there, as did CoCo live some of the time. He was there to report on Naval operations. That was his secret job. Frankly if I knew someone had married a Jewish or half-Jewish woman I would not assume they were a Nazi.
It's also that she may have played him and others with one objective which may sound selfish, but that is to survive as her world crumbled around her, to continue her business that she had to shut down and leave, to keep her employees, to continue to help her family. When she finally got out of Paris before the occupation, her employees mostly having fled to the countryside, people starving and in the streets, in bitter cold without heat, it was to her family that she fled. So what if she could afford a chauffer and a Rolls Royce? Wasn't she just as entitled to be afraid for her life?
And so if we focus on what the author dug up about the Baron, who was no doubt a spy for Nazi Germany, we can start there.
In the 1930's CoCo was worth in today's money about $230 million dollars. In the mid 1930's Adolph Hitler's second in command, Joseph Goebbels - who controlled all media - approved Baron Hans Gunther Von Dincklage as a special attaché to the German Embassy in Paris. French intelligence as well as Swiss intelligence was watching him. He was part of a "cell" of several hundred Nazi intelligence people in France. But intelligence may have been keeping an eye on the Baron while CoCo may have been one of many kept ignorant - at least for a while. The Baron's wealth was not close to hers. He was set up and being paid by Germany.
In Paris the Ritz Hotel became an island of wealth where the elite people moved to live as if there were no war. Chanel lived there as well as having a workspace and apartment across the street from the back door. The author makes the case that Chanel and some of her dear friends were morphine addicts for much of their lives, and that Chanel used the drug due to the depression she felt when yet another man she loved died suddenly - though this is repeated in the book as fact, it didn't seem to be substantiated, however, let's accept it and think "OK she had weaknesses."
During World War I, one tenth of French men died fighting. No one wanted to believe another World War would begin but in 1939 when panic hit Paris, there were no taxis, no telephones, and 4 million French fled south, often on foot, ahead of the German army. By then a lot of people were sorting through garbage cans outside of restaurants to solve their hunger pangs.
Dincklage divorced his wife Maximiliane a few months before the Nuremberg laws of 1934 deprived her of her citizenship. No one knows for sure when Chanel met Dincklage, but he was married then and he did not divorce for CoCo but to be in compliance with the Nazi regime according to the author. She testified when questioned after the war that they knew each other for 25 years.
The political and economic conditions in Europe had people choosing sides, even sides that were not winning. People thought that Communists, Socialists, and Fascists wanted to take over France. Germany and England were not so much considered the enemy but Russians - Bolsheviks - many who were Jewish - were. People feared a Russian Revolution scenario in France. As a friend to the exiled Duke of Windsor, who had given up his Kingship for the woman he loved, his Mistress Wallis Simpson, CoCo had taken to meeting up with them and other friends in Switzerland. Winston Churchill and his son Randolph were also visitors and friends - in England - and in France - and in Switzerland. Hitler promised that he would reinstall the Duke of Windsor as the British King when Germany won the war. The Duke and Duchess went to meet Hitler and famously photographed happily shaking hands. If you are social with such people, who are of a more elite status than you, would you follow their lead?
Seven years ago in June 2011 CoCo Chanel, the woman said to have been responsible for dramatically changing the fashion and style of womens' wear, was our Mistress of the Month. You might want to go back to that month for an overall more balanced view. As for other Nazi Mistresses, I spent a whole month on them in November 2017.
This book seems to make the case that CoCo was, rather than once in her twenties a love sick woman who struggled with the early limitations of desperate poverty, a more of an experienced and worldly Mistress of more men than previously revealed in films and books. Throughout her adult life she had relationships, she loved, she was sexual. Her men were of various ethnic backgrounds that influenced her designs. Instead of thinking that the early heartbreaks left her focused only on designing clothes, and perfume, we can think of CoCo who was a woman of business with a sense of responsibility to her employees and family, not just herself. The most convincing part of the book is that she took a trip to Germany and indeed met a Nazi leader herself.
A little later in this month of posts, I'll write more about the relationship CoCo had with the Nazi Spy that I learned from this book. I would like my readers to ask themselves if they have kept a relationship going with a man after learning something negative about how he conducts business or treats other people.

STEVEN SPIELBERG's FILM SHINDLER'S LIST : EMILIE CATCHES HER HUSBAND ONE MORE TIME
Shindler's List is the film called Steven Spielberg's Opus.
If you haven't seen the film, it's a must.
If you haven't seen the film, it's a must.
The original title of this post was STEVEN SPIELBERG's FILM SHINDLER'S LIST : EMILIE CATCHES HER HUSBAND ONE MORE TIME and the video is gone.
In the film Oskar Schindler's wife comes to visit him and his Mistress is there with him and quickly leaves. All he has to say to his wife is how embarrassed the woman must be. For the purposes of the film the Mistress is seen as a sexual being, as if she is only there for sex with Oskar. Is Emilie Schindler accepting or long suffering her husband's infidelities?

RIGHTEOUS GENTILE OSKAR SCHINDLER's MISTRESSES : AURELIE SCHLEGEL, EVA "MARTA" KISZA, and GISELLA SCHEIN
OSKAR SCHINDLER
The Untold Account of His Life, Wartime Activities,
and the True Story Behind the List
by David M. Crowe
Westview Press - A member of Perseus Books Group
(The primary reference for this month's subject)
That list of women's names up there on the title needs an explanation.
OSKAR SCHINDLER, the man who is credited with saving about 1100* Jews from certain death during the Holocaust, by having them work for him at his factory and insisting they move with him to another, the subject of a film called "Schindler's List," often called director Steven Spielberg's Opus, was a womanizer. He never took his marriage vows to Emilie Pelzl seriously. (I don't think most men who have a Mistress are also having one-nighters, flings, quickies, affairs, or are as insensitive to their wives as this man!) He had a whole lot going on at all times. Oskar Schindler was complicated. He was possibly addicted to risk. He somehow made the time for several Mistresses, women with whom he had long relationships with, and his wife, whose book I will include this month, knew it all along.
EMELIE PELZL was 20 and Oskar was a little younger when they met and were married quickly, her farm family more prosperous than his, but both households effected by the terminal illnesses of a parent. Other than attraction and the innocence of youth, it's difficult to know what was behind the marriage really, perhaps pragmatism. Oskar's father was alcoholic and so was he, a lifelong ailment. I have to wonder if he was self medicating a mental illness. As a new husband, Oskar used most of Emilie's dowry to buy an exotic car manufactured originally for the Shah of Iran, without consideration for her, a car that would be the one they escaped from their factory in when the War, World War II, was over.
From the very beginning of their marriage, and for the rest of their lives, Oskar Schindler had the pattern of a charming sociopath, apparently sexually gifted and attractive, a "Whatever it takes," and "Where's the money?," kind of man who changed his side to the side that was winning more than once. This is important because there is controversy over if he should have been judged to be a Righteous Gentile (1962 in Israel), ultimately selfless, or not. Officially, he is, as there were many survivors who spoke up for him. I do believe it's possible that the atrocities that he witnesses created a profound change in him. Yet when it came to women, his was a never-ending series of adventures and misadventures.
These last few sentences are my opinion, my take, on this perplexing man, rooted in this book, and the author, David M. Crowe, researched extensively, and was eager to let us readers know how the truth and the film varied. In fact, the film did what it was meant to do, got much right, and took artistic license as screen writers and film directors and movie studios almost always do. I've personally watched it a half a dozen times. In fact, it was watching the film again, and seeing the scenes in which Oskar Schindler, and his associate, the certifiably evil Amon Goth, who headed the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp, where he indulged himself in daily indiscriminate killing, interplay and have their mistresses, that inspired this month's topic.
I wanted to know "Who were those Mistresses? We're they all really spies? How involved in the murder of Jews and other people taken prisoner were they? Is this another story about powerless women who are trapped in the role society expects of them?" And so I began to read around the subject, many articles on the internet, as well as some book recommendations. I'll include the Mistress of Amon Goth, Ruth Irene Kalder, in this month's reading. Additionally, there are a couple women whose names would not fit on the title bar above who Oskar Schindler is known to have had as girlfriends and Mistresses..
*************
In somewhat of a chronological order here are the MISTRESSES of Oskar Schindler that we know about and a little background for each:
Oskar and his wife Emilie met in the fall of 1927 and married March 6, 1928. At the time he was a traveling salesman. They moved in with his parents and younger sister where Emilie was overburdened with family care while he was gone for business. In 1928 Oskar was racing motorcycles. Emilie would spend her life being the dependable, responsible, hard working, and stable one.
*************
Oskar's many jobs included running a driving school. Then spent 18 months in the Czechoslovak army, went back to the sales job he had when he first met his wife, and during 1931-1932 was arrested for public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, assault, and other misdemeanor charges several times.
In 1938, now about 30 years old and just out of prison, Schindler applied to be a member of the Nazi Party. He was accepted as a provisional member February 2, 1939. They overlooked his character and arrests apparently, though he told the truth about having been. He had to prove he had no Jewish blood and that Emilie was not of Jewish blood. From this point his paid work and party affiliation seem to be intertwined. It is thought that Oskar Shindler's assignments lead to the Nazi invasion of Poland in September of 1939.
*************
1939 - Oskar and Emilie moved to Moravska Ostrava but he kept a separate apartment. Emilie lived in their house from 1939-1941 and then joined him in Krakow.
IRENA DVORZAKOWA lived in the separate apartment, which Oskar paid for, though she did work for a steel manufacturing company. April 1945 was the last he came there, probably the end of their relationship, but she did not move out until late 1945 or early 1946.
During this period of time, it's possible that Oskar was a spy. (In my opinion he could have been a double agent, maybe even a triple agent.)
**************
Ewa , the Polish form of Eva, was a Czech from Silesia, an area that had been taken over by Poland in 1939 ( Pg 121) She lost her job as a teacher and then made her living smuggling goods across the Polish - Czech border. Though she was engaged to be married, in about 1943, she became Oscar's Mistress. The Polish authotires were suspicious of all the trips she and Oskar made. She decided to flee to Czecholosvaliea with her fiancée, but the police shot him and killed him when they tried this escape. She was put into prison in Lvov. When she was released she went to live with Oskar. Called "His Wartime Mistress," he set her up in a small shop selling the enamelware that he made such as kettles and bowls.
Called Marta, she was complicit in a maneuver in which Oskar took advantage of his Nazi Party affiliation and contacts and in October of 1939, he decided to take over the business of Shlomo Wiener, the owner of the largest kitchenware, ironware, and cutlery businesses in Poland, which he and his brother Julius ran. What Oskar did was premeditated.
He had the business signed over to him, returned the next day to tell them he was the Trustee of the business and Marta his representative. He told Shlomo not to show his face, and had Julius teach him how to run the business. He paid the two men a monthly salary a bit less than they had paid themselves, and showed up with Marta every day to talk the business with Julius. (Julius would later call Marta "a soulless puppet, necessary only for official purposes" (Page 128)
Then, the day came in which the generally respectful Oskar, changed, and became verbally abusive and even physically abusive. Julius was beaten severely by the Gestapo, and black and blue and bleeding, was afraid to leave his house. Soon Oskar cut the brothers off financially, and so they no longer had the means to live. The Weiners later believed that Oskar helping Jews live in 1944 and 1945 was only to create an alibi for himself! (Page 126)
Marta went to parties with Oskar that Amon Goth threw, lavish parties where there was plenty of food and alcohol, with the death camp he ran down the hill. (The scenes in the film "Schindler's List" don't begin to reveal his depravity, for which he was eventually tried as a war criminal and sentenced to hanging.
EVA "MARTA" and her brother, along with 7 Jewish workers hoping to find relatives in France or Switzerland, along with Oskar and his wife, escaped when the war ended from the factory, using the car he had bought from his wife's dowry years before, and a truck. (Page 467) On the road the women feared being raped by Russian soldiers. Eventually the party separated.
*********
GISELLA SCHEIN
AKA GISA

Watch for the upcoming review of the book Where Light and Shadow Meet by Emilie Schindler, Oskar's wife, on the mistress- accommodating marriage. Oskar took both his wife and Gisa out of the country. But did he take either of them back to Europe with him?
Overall, Oskar Schindler seems to have been out of control of his life in so many ways, I have to remind myself that it is possible that beneath all this personal chaos, he had a heart, and eventually a deeper understanding of his life and times.C 2017 Mistress Manifesto BlogSpot All Rights Reserved

KING GEORGE I and HIS TWO MISTRESSES : THE ELEPHANT and THE CASTLE! OR WAS THAT THE MAYPOLE and HIS HALF SISTER ?
When England's Queen Anne, who bore 17 children, died without any children alive to take her throne, England went looking for a relative who would promote the Protestant succession. George I came from Germany to England to be crowned King of England and Scotland in 1714. He had been married to his first cousin Sophia, Princess of Celle, and it was not a happy marriage. She had a fling, her lover was disappeared, and she remained imprisoned in a castle until she died in 1726! Maybe the fact that George had two mistresses pushed her into an affair of her own?
Instead of his wife playing Queen, one of George's mistresses did.
George I arrived in England from Germany barely able to speak English and he never enjoyed popularity among the people. He had been invited by the Whigs (a political party) and he pretty much let them do as they wished, as long as they kept him informed. His two mistresses that he brought with him kept company with him until he died.
The two women were subject to nicknames, not just because they were also not well liked, as they were considered greedy and dull and weird, but because the two of them had drastically different looks.
Reading around the subject, you should know that the portly one, nicknamed The Elephant (surely behind her back!), Charlotte Sophia von Kielmansegg, was actually George's illegitimate half sister, sharing Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover as a father. There are those who say that theirs was never a sexual relationship and there are those who say the British court did so know!
(By today's standards she is certainly not a skinny woman!)
Since the two lovers could not marry, they had three children together who were illegitimate, but these children, daughters, all got titles. They were Anna Luise Sophie von der Schulenburg Countess of Dölitz, born in 1692, Melusina von der Schulenburg Countess of Walsingham, born 1693, and Margaret Gertrude von der Schulenburg, Countess of Oeynhausen, born 1701.
After George's death Melusine kept a pet raven which she believed was his soul, reincarnated. (There's a lot of lore about birds and souls in central and eastern Europe.)
All which goes to show you, that you need not be beautiful, in shape, have a sparkling personality, or much else going on, and you can still be a mistress! You just have to meet the "right one!"
*(As you may know the present husband of Princess Caroline (Monaco), Ernst August, is of the Hanoverian line and if history were different could be on the throne of England). If you're interested in reading about THE MISTRESSES OF THE PRINCES OF MONACO go to the January 2015 posts in the MISTRESS MANIFESTO archive!)

MAYBE WE WILL ALWAYS WONDER HOW MUCH EVA BRAUN KNEW
Most of us today loath Hitler and Nazism, but there are still people alive today who were in concentration camps, who lost their families, who were victimized by the Holocaust and they can tell you that there was a time when plenty of people hated Jews enough to allow a mass extermination of them.
Hitler could not do what he did with lots and lots of cooperation.
Today there are those who deny that any of it happened, or who say that it was all greatly exaggerated. And there are those who say that EVA BRAUN was loved by Hitler because she was naive, a country girl at heart, innocent in her way.
Is it true?
Did she have any power in her relationship with Hitler?
IS SHE THE WOMAN WHO COULD HAVE STOPPED THE HORROR by whispering in her man's ear, "Baby, please no."
How many mistresses have power in their relationships?

MISTRESS OF THE MONTH : EVA BRAUN MISTRESS OF ADOLF HITLER - MASTERMIND OF THE HOLOCAUST
from oddee.com identified as public domain from
THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
***********
"The historian takes the character at the center of her book seriously, and in the material she has analyzed, there is credible evidence that Braun was more to Hitler than an "attractive young thing" in whom the dictator "found, despite or perhaps because of her unassuming and insipid appearance, the sort of relaxation and calm he was seeking," as Hitler's personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann later claimed.
"In his will, which Hitler drew up in 1938, Braun's name appeared immediately after that of the Nazi Party. Under the provisions of the will, the party was to pay her a substantial, lifelong pension, to be drawn from his assets..."
