CATHERINE JAMES - BOB DYLAN - and the RECENT ACCUSATIONS AGAINST HIM

DAILY MAIL - CATHERINE JAMES / BOB DYLAN 2007 MEMOIR  link to the article

Taking a pause here to address the accusations that Bob Dylan had an inappropriate sexual relationship long ago.  If he did it was not with Catherine James.

I saw the article linked above in Daily Mail - a British publication that has an Online presence.  Although I included CATHERINE JAMES in my month about GROUPIES,  I felt that it was also not appropriate for the Daily Mail to link Catherine James in this article - to even bring her up - in order to float more speculation against BOB DYLAN, who is included here because of his long relationship with RUTH TRYANGIEL, to whom he was required to provide a financial settlement.

I read Catherine James' memoir years back before including her in that month's GROUPIES feature, and basically, she never said that Bob was anything but honorable. Catherine James had a hard life, beginning with a cruel narcissist mother, one she had to survive.  As many teenagers did, she headed for what excited her, the burgeoning rock and roll scene in what is now West Hollywood - the Sunset strip.

Her depiction of Bob Dylan was of him being kind, almost big brotherly, and driving her home - and home was an orphanage. James became a groupie and admits to having sexual relationships with a number of rock stars.  Bob wasn't one of them, even if she had him up on the pedestal.

I have to say his. There is a difference between a 14 year old teenager being forced into an arranged marriage or anyone being forced into sex slavery,  or a 14 year old being molested by a step father or teacher, and the choice some young women made, though often this was unknown to their parent or parents, to be groupies.  The world had just started being a different place when contraception, significantly The Pill, became available, and part of what was Women's Liberation was sexual liberation.

RUTH TYRANGIEL : THANKS FOR THE UPDATE in COMMENTS BUT...

A while back I got an interesting comment about Ruth Tyrangiel, the mysterious musical muse of  singer-songwriter of fame, Bob Dylan. She was the person I elected to be Mistress of the Month in August 2013. (You can find those posts in the archive - see the sidebar.)

The problem with posting this comment is that while it was interesting, as the person stated that Ruth was renting a house in his or her neighborhood and that there was a son living there who looked a lot like Bob and Ruth is rumored to be the mother of one of Bob Dylan's children, it didn't give me any reference. There was no way to contact this person.  It didn't say what neighborhood that was - was in Los Angeles?  New York? How does this person know that the house is rented?  I understand that some information that comes in to me is someone's personal knowledge and they could be right on and that information might not be published anywhere else so it would be a scoop but I just can't without learning more. Still, I will keep this in mind and see if I can find confirmation another way.

Missy

UPDATE  December 2020

Got another comment confirming this which I have not published. Hey, it's OK with me if Ruth is renting a house, and all that.  I'm not going to track her down or invade her privacy or try to invalidate any agreement she might have with Bob Dylan. He was just in the news for selling a 600 song music catalogue so it sounds like he's cashing out.  A friend mentioned that he has so much money, what's he going to do with more?  I said, "Well, there are his children." So I did a little more internet research and found mentions that he may have many more children than those he had with his first wife, or the one - acknowledged when she became an adult - that he had with his second.  I should say SECOND KNOWN.  There are rumors that Bob Dylan has had secret marriage(s) and may be the father of up to ten children.

But remember, MOST OF THE TIME, I reference other authors, journalists, and writers to promote someone to MISTRESS OF THE MONTH or to have a mention on this blog.

So - if you leave a comment I will not publish it if you start out with DO NOT PUBLISH. And I will write down a link you send and look at it later.

Thanks Again!

Missy

FURTHER COMMENT ON THE THOUGHT PROVOKING COMMENTARY RECENTLY SENT TO ME AND PUBLISHED BY ME BELOW!

There is always a presumption that a wife is hurt by learning that her husband (we'll presume she calls him that because they are legally wed) is "cheating" on her with one or many "other women." Why is it called "cheating?"  Well, because it is assumed that one person has to be all and everything to another person and anything they may have with someone else short changes them.  But does it?

When it comes to women who know they are marrying someone who is likely to have many women in his life, I think some of them do not mind or at least think it will not matter. perhaps because they themselves want the liberty, or they get into it understanding that they are with a man who will not or cannot be their one and only. Are all men like this?  No, I don't think so.  It may also be about a chapter of their life and not their entire life. I think it depends on keeping the conversation lively between you and anyone you might partner with. You really do have to speak up about your own feelings and boundaries. As well, there are married couples who decide to stay married but open their relationships. For instance, I think what Will and Jada Pinkett Smith say about their relationship is important. They are candid about it while so many others in the same situation pretend they are in a traditional marriage.

There are or have been both biological and financial reasons why a woman wants a partner to be loyal and faithful to her, especially if there are children involved. But with the huge number of women who have "baby daddies" or no daddies at all for the children they are bringing into this world, maybe that's old fashioned thinking.

Thank you for the insightful and heartfelt commentary!

CATHERINE JAMES : DANDELION : MISTRESS MANIFESTO BOOK REVIEW

CATHERINE JAMES OFFICIAL SITE Catherine James

Bob Dylan took her out of the orphanage but played the older brother she never had. Not just one more young girl who ran away to Sunset Strip, or got caught up in the Rock Gods who courted her, a bit more of a flower child than a Groupie by my way of thinking, Catherine James survived a abusive childhood, but, not quite out of it was left to raise her only son, fathered by a British rock musician with Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine, when she was 16.  She lived by her wits after he financially abandoned them.

Mom was a Malignant Narcissist, Dad beat Bruce Jenner to the change. Catherine James relied on the Universe to provide at times and proved that you don't have to duplicate the way your parents raised you, that you can better them, even if you live in a house in the woods that's barely standing or your car doesn't run or the jobs you take are odd.

Like a number of Rock Goddesses, she was beautiful enough to model, and despite having a very hard life, has found goodness in it.

One of several books I've read by former Groupies, there's something of a delicacy to James that defies her obvious inner strength.

NANCY LEE ANDREWS : PHOTOGRAPHER MISTRESS OF RINGO STAR : MISTRESS OF THE MONTH

 NANCY LEE ANDREWS

Picture from Nancy Lee Andrews Photography...
(What a gorgeous "older" woman!)

Nancy was born May 14, 1947.
Nancy married Edwin Barnes in 1990.

CLICK HERE TO SEE A GREAT PHOTO OF NANCY ANDREWS FROM 2011

Like Beatlemate Paul McCartney's wife, Linda Eastman, Ringo Starr had a rock n' roll photographer in his romantic life, for several years.

Nancy Lee Andrews published this book in 2008.  In some promos of the book, she is described as a "half Sicilian and half Cherokee" Ford model working in Manhattan in the 1960's and 1970's. Her relationship with the ex-Beatle's drummer gave her access to the rock and roll stars she photographed.  The pictures in the book were taken for a decade beginning in 1970.

She also published this limited edition book of all Ringo photos taken in the mid 1970's.

*******
When their relationship was over, Nancy Lee Andrews went after Ringo Starr for Palimony, according to a new book, called "RINGO - With A Little Help" - and according to one interviewee in the book, Ringo did right by Nancy financially.  And you know, I expected that of Ringo.  I think he's a decent man.

NO MENTION OF NANCY IN THIS ONE!

I looked all over the web for more information about the Palimony case. I even read this new book on Beatle's law suits trying to find out more, but there was nothing in "Baby You're A Rich Man," about lawsuits outside of the music business.

On the web, on Getty Images, there are pictures of Nancy and her famous Palimony Lawyer, Marvin Mitchelson, but I've been unable to verify that whatever money she got from Ringo was actually the result of that level of legal action, unlike the information previously linked to on this blog when I covered Ruth Tryangiel, the mistress of musician Bob Dylan, which was legally negotiated.  In the book one interviewee suggests that Nancy's real motive wasn't money but - how shall I say this - that she felt betrayed by Barbara Bach, a model she once thought of as friendly - and thought Ringo needed a wake up call.

(I'll think on that!)

A woman is involved with a man long term.  She may be living with him.  If they don't live together, they are spending a lot of time together at his place or hers.  They go on vacations together.  They consider themselves to be a couple.  They hold themselves out to be a couple to others. Their friends, family, and business associates all know about them and go places and do things with them.  It's not a sneaky, secret relationship.  They may even be engaged to be married or at least talking about it.  Maybe there has even been a proposal and a ring that is worn.  Well, all their friends think they will marry eventually.

No one is thinking this woman is a Mistress.

Then, one day the man meets someone else.  He suddenly feels he has met The One, and he will marry that Other Woman, as soon as he can.  Leaving his Ready Steady Go woman wondering what the hell happened, in shock, in pain, and maybe even in some serious economic need. Wondering what, if anything, she ever was to him, not wanting to consider that maybe he cheated before, maybe she was never the only one, what the hell.

After years of reading around the subject and writing this blog I no longer think that we can and should only apply the term "Mistress" to relationships that are occurring in adultery.   (The press should also stop calling a woman a "Mistress" when there is no relationship, like when she slept with a married celebrity and then told or got caught by the tabloids.)

So, was Ringo married when he and Nancy Lee got together?  No. And was she?  No.

But then, why the Palimony suit against Ringo when he didn't follow through after their  years together that seemed to be headed towards marriage, but ended when he fell in love at first sight with Barbara Bach, who he has been with ever since...

PALIMONEY is actually rooted in the 19th century.

Breach Of Promise.

It may stun some of you, but a hundred and more years ago, when a woman was engaged to a man and he cancelled the engagement, it was considered a Breach of Promise.  She was to give back his ring. (She wore it but it wasn't really hers until the marriage was a done deal.  Though maybe no other woman would want to be the next to wear such a ring with it's bad vibes and association with another woman, engagement rings were not gifts but the way of confirming that Promise.)  The couple also were to RETURN EACH OTHERS LOVE LETTERS; there was no tacky revenge postings on the Internet.  People with class acted honorable. It was a much higher level of privacy expected and respected.  What they wrote and what they said was forever between them and it was expected that they would both keep their private business private.  No one with any manners who expected to be eligible to marry again would be so mean to rub salt into the wounds.

When the engagement had been announced in the papers or was known to the set of society one belonged to, the Broken Engagement had the potential to ruin a reputation.  Most of all it was assumed that during the period of loyalty and faithfulness prior to marriage that she (and he?) kept to, she had been OFF THE MARKET, a waste of her valuable time, when she should have been IN THE MARKET for MARRIAGE, that means meeting or being introduced to other men rather than tied up with one.  After all, unless you were an heiress, (and most inheritances were given to sons, especially the eldest son), you had to marry and be supported by a man, or waste away as a Spinster.  That time off the market was valuable time because while a woman was in the commitment that the engagement was, she could not date others.  There wasn't much one could do to save face when their Intended changed his or her mind so far into it and certainly it was better to have a broken engagement than a bad marriage but sometimes the man was banished from society, at least from the set he'd been associated with.

These days Breach of Promise type lawsuits seem to occur only when the actual wedding is cancelled after a serious expenditure of non refundable money.  (You read about the wedding feast being donated to the homeless by the stood up bride.)

Nancy Lee Andrews, and other women, have asked their rich exes for money, or sued for Palimony when they took significant time off from their owns means of support, be that modeling or photography or whatever, or their ability to make a living suffered, but Nancy Lee at least turned her treasure of photographs into books she sold.  Ringo's Breach of Promise meant not being able to live the life of financial ease that she had become accustomed to as his girlfriend/fiancée/Mistress.

A Mistress, as a companion who sometimes travels on business or for pleasure with her man, can't be there for him and also be punching a clock or be expected to be at the office full time. Nancy Lee traveled with Ringo and she was there for him, but she was also behind the camera.

RINGO STARR DID RIGHT BY NANCY LEE ANDREWS
when he left their relationship
to be with Barbara Bach
according to this book which is a primary reference
for this months MISTRESS OF THE MONTH.

I thought the title of this book, was snide, though the author, Michael Seth Starr (no relation to Ringo), is well respected for his past and present writing.  Help as in "this guy needs it.  He can't do it alone." What is true is that, Richard Starkey, as the Beatles' loyal drummer and sometimes singer who, like the other three Beatles, found himself in need of a second and third act after amazing worldly success in that band at an early age, did go through a tough time.

The story of Ringo's attempt to figure out what was next for him has its successes and failures, and mostly he has come out on top, with his long second marriage, to once upon a time James Bond movie actress, Barbara Bach, a music career solo and separate of the Beatles, a charity that he is devoted to, and even being the focus of a special show at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

GRAMMY MUSEUM - RINGO STARR PEACE AND LOVE
I went and loved the show.
There was happiness in the air there.

I've always suspected that it was Ringo who was the peacemaker of the Beatles. Ringo is the one who all three others kept in touch with in the years after the band broke up and they all went their own solo-career ways.  His signature has become "Peace and Love."

The Nancy Lee Andrews days were, however, not always his best days, though you can find many photos of the couple on Google Images and other Internet sources, with and with other musicians and Beatles, looking happy and having a great time.

Ringo took to hard partying with certain of his musician pals, mostly drink but drugs too, in particular cocaine, and Nancy, at the end of their relationship, even as he had met Barbara, was assigned to be his "minder," the term used here to mean, someone who travels and keeps tabs on an out of control addict, so that he won't get into any real trouble.

Ringo, it's reported in this book, and elsewhere reported along with Barbara, did get rehab.  He must have been disgusted with his life at that point and hit the very scary rock bottom, because he has been sober successfully since and is even a Vegan!  All good things for Ringo, who prefers to be known as Richard Starkey, his family name before fame.

Nancy Lee Andrews proves to us that being a Mistress is not often a life long commitment  and that a woman can get back to having a career whatever her romantic status was.

REPORTAGE ON RUTH'S LAWSUIT AGAINST BOB FROM EXPECTING RAIN

EXCERPT: FROM REUTERS: "Woman Wants $5M +"

LOS ANGELES--A woman who says she lived with Bob Dylan for nearly 20 years is suing the folk-rock superstar for at least $5 million plus an unspecified amount of palimony.

In a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior  Court Wednesday, Ruth Tryangiel said she was  always available to Dylan during their years together and that he had promised to marry her.

Tryangiel also claims she helped Dylan in his  business decisions and assisted writing some of  his songs. The lawsuit says Tryangiel is entitled  to $5 million based on property acquired while  they were living together and income from song  royalties and other sources...

... The suit said that early in their relationship,  Dylan and Tryangiel had agreed to represent themselves to the public as man and wife, and to share any income earned while they were together.

On the palimony issue, the lawsuit says, "Plaintiff and defendant enjoyed and maintained  during the course of their relationship a certain standard of living, which standard of living  defendant promised to main for plaintiff the rest  of her life."

Tryangiel alleges breach of contract, fraud, deceit and intentional infliction of emotional distresses, saying she has suffered "humiliation,  mental anguish, emotional and physical injuries, loss of energy, severe tension and profound shock  and anxiety."

RUTH TYRANGIEL: BOB DYLAN'S MYSTERIOUS MISTRESS MUSE : MISTRESS OF THE MONTH AUGUST 2013

Through these pages you'll find Mistresses who died penniless and exiled after being with Kings and Princes, and Mistresses who did well enough (or were smart or lucky enough) to live off the gifts they were given for being a man's companion in their youth for the rest of their life.  You also read a lot about famous and infamous mistresses. The mistresses (and a few mantresses) that you've read about are generally well known.

RUTH TYRANGIEL, however, is a mysterious mistress muse.  Most of us only know about her because she sued the world famous singer-songwriter Bob Dylan for palimony*  and there was a settlement out of court, generous enough for her, if she's smart and lucky, to live the rest of her life very well off.  Most of us only know about Ruth because she is, last we heard, living in retirement in New York (mostly) from the undisclosed settlement that her lawyer brokered for her with Bob's.  (A few years back she sold her home there to actress Renee Zellweger.)

Though involved with one of the world's most prolific and respected singer-songwriters, BOB DYLAN, for seventeen to twenty years of their lives, few outside Dylan's intimate circle of family and friends, knew about Ruth.

She kept a low profile and Bob tries to keep his private life out of the media, very successfully.  With the women he has married and/or had children with, he believes it is best to shield them from fame.  He's the provider who goes out into the world and brings back the goodies, but Ruth claimed in her law suit that in all the years she knew him he only gave her one gift - an orange.

Was this a case of Bob wanting Ruth to prove that she loved him only for himself?  I'd say she succeeded!

During that time he was married to his wife Sara, with whom he has four children. Bob and Sara divorced and then he married again - but not Ruth.  (Bob Dylan is rumored to have fathered at least seven children, and possibly one son with Ruth.)

Ruth said in her statement that he promised he would marry her.

I first heard her name less than a decade ago when I met one of those people who explained to me that her surname means DOOR ANGEL in Hebrew.  Still, I had no idea that when this person said "involved" with Bob Dylan," that we were talking a MISTRESS, a MYSTERIOUS woman who was involved with a ENIGMATIC MAN.  I hadn't read any of the books about Bob Dylan in which she is mentioned.

Ruth MilesTryangiel is so mysterious I had to really dig to come up with some information about her for you. There are far more mistresses that will live their lives unknown to the world, like Ruth, than the famous and infamous ones.

*See my previous posts about Michelle Triola Marvin who sued actor Lee Marvin for not providing support for her after living together as if man and wife, the suit that coined the word "palimony."

UPDATE MAY 2017
I recently picked up a simple comment which wouldn't publish - guess there's a glitch.  It said, "I wonder if Bob really loved Ruth."  I bet he did, but then I think there are so very many ways to love. When a man has a long involvement with a woman well, that says a lot. Consider that Ruth, as far as we know, was only photographed publically with Bob once.  No doubt they had some sort of understanding that she remain in his private life, and not his public!  That's my opinion!  Missy

In addition I also want to mention that someone sent me information on Ruth that I have no way of proving, without a name, reference, or link.  If that's YOU, please provide me a way to check out that information!
