THE PRESS, SOCIETY, and KEEPING AN OPEN SECRET - DORCAS HARDIN and PAUL MELLON

Page 343  Like all of JFK's sexual affairs, Paul Mellon and Dorcas Hardin's arrangement was never covered by the press, although it seems that everyone in D.C. knew about it.  "Dorcas was fun!  Easy.  IT was a very open relationship," recalled Janet Bruce, David and Evangeline Bruce's daughter-in-law, who had been one of a party of four women, including Dorcas and Polly Wisner Fritchcie, who went on a shopping tour together in New York.  Jim, the Mellon's chauffeur, had driven them around.

Katherine Graham reportedly threatened her reporters to ensure a kind of official privacy for Paul's affair, saying, "If a single line appears in (the) paper about this, that reporter will be out of a job before the ink is dry on the page." Graham had publically acknowledged her friendship with Bunny only by noting its breach, calling her "mu then-friend Bunny Mellon" in print without saying what had happened.  Graham protected Paul and Dorcas, which thus in a sidelong sense protected Bunny as well...

Who were Bunny's real friends in D.C.?  Jackie Kennedy topped the list even before she became First Lady; after she moved to New York in 1964 she remained Bunny's closest confidante until her death thirty years later.  Evangeline Bruce was an ally and a closemouthed one.  Bunny did talk to her family and friends about Dorcas, but when she did so she cast the affair mostly as a tiresome joke...

A note that Katherine Graham was the owner of several publications but most noteworthy the Washington Post.

PAUL MELLON HAD DORCAS HARDIN - BUNNY MELLON HAD A CAVALCADE OF GAY COMPANIONS

Page 98 ...

In Dorcas Hardin he (Paul Mellon) had rediscovered that laughter, sex, coziness, and empathy.  Dorcas seems to have released in Paul the certain knowledge of who he wanted to be, the man he felt he truly was.

Page 99 ...

For Paul, being "Careful to allow each other to develop our own interests" meant Dorcas. For Bunny,, it meat a long cavalcade of interesting ad talented men - almost all gay, except, perhaps, for Jean Schlumberger, the jewelry designer who, by all reports, occasionally slept with women who, like most of the others, had a male life partner, Luc Bouchage.

***

It would seem that Bunny had a series of unrequited crushes.

DORCAS HARDIN : MORE THAN THREE DECADES AS MISTRESS OF BILLIONAIRE ART COLLECTOR and HORSE BREEDER PAUL MELLON : REVISITING DORCAS

In May 2018 my topic here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO BLOGSPOT was DORCAS HARDIN : Mistress of Billionaire Art Collector and Horse Breeder Paul Mellon.  It's time to revisit Dorcas Hardin as our Mistress of the Month since more information has come out!

DORCAS HARDIN

1911-2006

A terrific new book came out titled I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise by Mac Griswold in the fall of 2022. (Mac is a woman by the way.)  I waited weeks before a copy from my library was available to read. I could truly understand why it was on a librarian's choice list when I read it.  I believe that author Mac Griswold had access to Bunny Mellon and the family, first though social connections that went back, and then uncovered much that had not been revealed before about Mrs. Mellon, including her awareness and adaptation to her husband having a mistress.

Bunny Mellon, who started life out as Rachael Lambert, an heiress, was the wife of Paul Mellon. He was her second husband and she was his second wife. Mellon is estimated to have been worth at least 3.3 billion in today's money. In his book about his life, and in general, Paul Mellon was careful with his words and not one to be too revealing.

Bunny was an immensely talented and self-taught garden designer as well as an art collector who, with her husband, donated a vast collection of important works - paintings and sculptures - to the National Gallery of Art, which was founded by Paul's father Andrew Mellon. They lived a life of extreme privileged and there was nothing she could want for if it could be bought with money. She lived to design outdoor spaces - the natural world, as well as interiors - to make them look effortless and comfortable and her clothing was custom designed by the most famous designers, her jewelry the most fabulous. However, her second marriage, proved to be one that left her wanting for love and companionship, and went sexless.

According to Griswold's book, the first half decade or so of the relationship between Paul and Bunny was highly charged and erotic, but then Paul decided to go into therapy and soon enough vacated the marriage sexually and otherwise. He decided that Bunny should remain Mrs. Mellon, but they lived lives that were essentially separate, joining together for social events. Society was wise to their arrangement perhaps, while in general they were far too elite for the public to know - or understand - due to the discretion of those in their class.

This fine book gives us the opportunity to know a bit more about Dorcas as well as Bunny and her attitude towards Paul and his mistress. So as I like to do I'll be excerpting the parts that deal with that. You can easily summon up the month of May 2018 in the archives and read what I posted back then about Dorcus, Bunny, and Paul which was based on a different book. Our understanding of Dorcas Hardin will expand as we learn more about the woman who kept company with Paul Mellon for many years, and it could be argued, was the true love of his life.

Here is how she is described in Mac Griswold's fabulous book from page 97:

"Dorcas was fabulous looking, tall, not thin but not fat either - well-rounded, I guess you'd call  her, " said one of my Foxcroft classmates whose family was friendly with the Hardins. "She had auburn hair in a pageboy, was pretty, and was always stunningly dressed and incredibly chic, She gave great dinner parties,  Despite her profound deafness ( Dorcas learned to lip-read to compensate.), "she wanted to be with people all the time." She was a beloved D.C. society figure.  "She was naughty and fun - always laughing.  I mean she was somebody's mother, but she was still a kick ... There was an amazingly good energy around her all the time.  And she noticed how you felt; she would say, "What's the matter with you?" then pat your cheek."

Dorcas was also alert to small things, to fashion statements perhaps not yet considered appropriate but that were fun and edgy. "When y younger sister wanted to get her ears pierced,: said a diplomat's daughter who worked in Dorcas;s boutique in the summer of 1972, "and our mother said no, Dorcas said, "Of course she should get her ears pierced."  Others remember Dorcas's great eye and her ability to be plainspoken without causing offense: "If you picked out clothes that didn't suit you, Dorcas would say, "No that doesn't look right."

***

Bunny ordered her clothes custom and had no need to buy clothing from Dorcas' boutique though Dorcas ordered in fashions from many of the world's most celebrated designers for her clientele.

Notes:

Bunny and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis were best friends. It is noteworthy that Jackie invited Bunny to design the rose garden at the White House as well as the grave of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Bunny was old enough to be Jackie's mother and it could be said that Jackie had a better relationship with Bunny than her own mother and Bunny a better relationship with Jackie than her own daughter.

Before we move on, here is an article from Town and Country on the extraordinary friendship between Bunny and Jackie TOWN and COUNTRY ; JACKIE AND BUNNY EXTRAORDINARY FRIENDSHIP

Interested in Jackie Kennedy?  President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his mistresses? They, as well as Little Edie Bouvier have been the subject here at Mistress Manifesto in the past.

THE END IS A NEW BEGINNING : A NEW MARRIAGE AND A MOVE WEST

Isabel Rosario Cooper moved out of the hotel in D.C. and may have been evicted from it. Soon she was living in another hotel in New York City.  A investigative journalist who was interested in exposing MacArthur to criticism for political reasons found Isabel and she showed him the love letters. It seems that this journalist was integral to a negotiation in which MacArthur didn't get away with stranding Isabel financially. $15,000 is said to have been the amount of settlement. Using an on-line inflation calculator this would be about $325,000 today. General Douglas MacArthur wanted the woman he once wished to possess to move back to the Philippines but she did not.

Now she did sail back to Manila for a visit. Then in 1936 when she was about twenty-six, she arrived in Seattle, Washington state, from Manila and she would never again set foot in the Philippines. She claimed American citizenship based on her father's American citizenship.

"It is telling that MacArthur's last communication with Isabel Cooper includes both a ticket and a job ad.  The classified ad column - "For women" - lists a variety of occupations deemed appropriate for women in 1934, ranging from commission sales and demonstrations of various products (food, Christmas cars, cosmetics), care taking for a young attorney and son), food services, nursing, and office work.  It reflects his thinking that Isabel Cooper was a kept woman, no more, that there would be no more generosity to support her life of leisure. Isabel Cooper could get a job. (Excerpt pages 25-26)

************************************
Missy here:  This makes my blood boil. It tells me that General Douglas MacArthur was a narcissist. He was the seducer and he was the one who abandoned her. However beautiful or charming she was, Isabel was very young and he was old enough to know better. He wanted to use up her youth and vitality and derail her career and the way he treated her, the whole Go Get a Job thing is insulting and horrible.

*******************************

"The domestic arrangements are tacit, but clear; MacArthur relies on his mother to provide him with the comforts of home while he ensures her well being. He turns to Isabel Cooper for sex and emotional fulfillment, but also to buttress his fragile ego.  Her role is not just to be adored but also to admire him.  Her presence is an indicator of his virility. Even though she is not officially his hostess, enough people in Washington know of her presence to conclude that MacArthur's sexual prowess must reflect his military rank."  (Excerpt page 26)

Instead, in 1938, she married a law student who she had met while living in Washington D.C. Franklin Kennamer. The Great Depression had begun in 1929 and World War II is coming. The marriage doesn't last. She has gone from being Isabel Kennamer to Belle Cooper.

But by 1941ish Belle Cooper was living in Hollywood, ready to give her career as an actor, dancer, and singer another whirl and took on another name for acting. She asked the same journalist who had helped her get a settlement from MacArthur for any help he might have - any connections he could offer. She continued to report into him and by 1951 when she was 40ish she had finally landed a film role of some significance in "I Was An American Spy." The film's story touches her personal life with MacArthur because he was the person who gave the Medal of Honor to the woman who was the spy during World War II. This worries her and she begins to reinvent the relationship, considering him to have been a father figure. However, the film was not successful and this was the best role she ever got.

Three months after her divorce from Kennamer, she married again, in 1944, to Milton Moreno. And then again in 1946 - no divorce between them recorded. She is thirty-seven. There is no record of this man in her life. Her may have been a batterer. There were reports of her showing up to work with bruises. Did he take off?

SHE FOLLOWED A TRAIL OF LOVE LETTERS : HE CALLED HER BABY GIRL - DARLING OF MY LIFE - and MY BELOVED

Excerpt:

"On the ninth of December, 1930, a young woman disembarks from the President Fillmore, which has just docked in New York City after a long ocean voyage. Isabel Cooper has finally arrived from Manila, having come to the United States at the behest of her lover, General Douglas MacArthur.  She is eighteen, or twenty-one, or somewhere in between.

She follows a trail of love letters strewn across the Pacific, written by MacArthur and posted from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kobe, Yokohama, Tokyo, Honolulu, and San Francisco.  They mark his route home after being recalled from his two-year assignment as the commanding general of the Philippines Department.  They also mark the intensity of his ardor for the charming, worldly Filipina performer he had met the year before.  (How worldly could she be as a barely legal woman in 1930?)

Just weeks before Isabel Cooper's arrival, the fifty-one year old MacArthur is promoted to the rank of general, ordered to Washington, D.C. and appointed by President Herbert Hoover as the chief of staff of the United States Army.

MacArthur installs Isabel Cooper in a suite at the Chasleton Hotel, conveniently near his State, War, and Navy Building office.  His redoubtable mother, Pinky, lives with him in the official chief-of-staff residence in Fort Meyer, Virginia.  He lavishes Isabel Cooper with gifts, mostly clothes. Their liaison is not a secret to Washington insiders -- it is his mother that he wants to keep in the dark."  (pages 15-16)

(Her letters back to him do not exist.  Did he destroy them?)

Quoting one of the letters Douglas wrote to her:

"My love encompasses you and enshrines you deep in my heart... I kiss your dear lips and press your soft body to my own... I long for you so that the memory makes me feel ill and faint." (page 19)

LUCY MERCER RUTHERFURD : FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT's MISTRESS WHOSE EXISTENCE WRECKED ELEANOR and ENHANCED HIS LIFE

LUCY MERCER RUTHERFURD
1891-1948

Their relationship never really ended, though after they ended the affair and she married another man, it may have been a deep friendship; Lucy Mercer managed to attend his Presidential Inaugurations (four of them) as Mrs. Rutherfurd; she'd married an older rich man after Franklin said he could not leave his marriage. She called him at the White House, using the code name Mrs. Paul Johnson. She came back into the President's life and visited him at the White House, Hyde Park, and Warm Springs (The Little White House) when in her 50's and fifteen years after their affair. She was there at Warm Springs, the Polio rehab resort that Roosevelt purchased and turned into a non profit, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt died.

When they first met, she was an upper class woman living in genteel poverty who needed to work to pay the rent and help her mother. Lucy Mercer was hired by Franklin's wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, to be her social secretary, thus entering the Roosevelt home as an employee. She was 18 and had just finished school in Europe. She was paid $30 a week - not bad for the times. She was ladylike and some thought her bearing regal.

Lucy began her relationship with the future President of the United States before Polio crippled his legs. Before he entered politics.

Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife and eventual First Lady of the United States, is a feminist icon today but back in the day she was primarily a loyal and dutiful wife and mother who was defined by the expectations of Upper Crust Society and Christian womanhood. Eleanor was just fifteen years old when she went to Allenwood, a private school in England, to be educated, the founder an "out" lesbian. At eighteen she came to New York and debuted in 1902 as marriage ready, a spectacle she dreaded and fled as soon as she could. (Shades of our Mistress of the Month Edie Bouvier - Mistress of the Month - August 2014). No great beauty and unsure of herself, Eleanor was destined to do charity work and be a wife and mother. She joined the Junior League and would later work with the poor in a Settlement House but as Camilla Parker Bowles (our Mistress of the Month for May 2010 and April 2016) and  Pamela Digby Churchill Harriman (March and April this year), also experienced, finding a husband was the reason for being a debutante. Importantly, in 1902, President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was more related to Eleanor than Franklin, but the families had high expectations since one of their own achieved this most important office.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt came from one of America's oldest families Old Dutch and Protestant. His mother's wealth kept him in line with her expectations. He was a Preppie, graduating from Groton and then onto Harvard where he was most known for his athletics, his membership in The Fly Club, a graduate of the class of 1904.

It was FDR's dominating mother who threw him a three day house party at their estate, Hyde Park. Eleanor and her maid stayed the duration. Their connection as cousins wasn't first cousins as their common ancestor lived five generations earlier and she was more closely related to Teddy, the President. He was still at Harvard, not yet in Columbia Law School. Perhaps FDR wanted a broodmare of a wife and nothing more at that age. Oddly, when their surprising engagement occurred, it was his mother who was so against the marriage that she asked them to keep it a secret for a year. For the rest of their lives just about everyone thought them to be an ill matched couple. When the marriage fractured upon the revelation l of his relationship with Lucy Mercer, it was his mother who was against divorce.

Though he was tall, handsome, and known for his energy and she was plain and awkward, her looks being commented upon as such for her entire life, both had their own incomes. Eleanor brought to the marriage an annual $8000 a year (about $169,000 in 2008 dollars), while he brought $5000.  This was not enough for the lifestyle they wanted and his mom provided the extras such as private school educations for their children. The couple destined for an enduring but not happy marriage wed March 17, 1905. She was 20 and he was 23, both likely virgins. They both left others with broken hearts - or at least others who were interested. Their wedding was shared with New York - a parade even - attended by New York Society. But the poor Mercers did not attend.  Lucy Mercer was just fourteen years old.

Tall, blue eyed, with almost blonde thick hair, with beautiful skin and voice, poised and chic, Lucy Mercer was hired (as May Pang, May 2012 Mistress of the Month had been by Yoko Ono, ex Beatle John Lennon's wife) to be an in home secretary. Franklin had begun his law career and four years later was still a clerk - nothing illustrious to brag about. He went clubbing - the Knickerbocker, Harvard, the Yacht Club, without Eleanor and started thinking about politics, even dreaming about the American Presidency.  After bearing two children, his mom, in 1908, bought them a brownstone in New York and decorated it - right next door to hers - leaving Eleanor to feel she had no home of her own. Summers for Eleanor and the children were spent at Campobello Island, also dominated by his mom. The Roosevelt's were starting to live separate lives.

In 1913, eight years married, FDR achieved his first step towards the Presidency, when he was sworn in as assistant to the Secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson. He wasn't going to be home much.  Eleanor's social obligations to visit other women increased her work load as she was expected, in those days so long before social networking on the Internet, to physically call on others to say hello. She could leave a card or end up spending hours. She had to make about thirty (30) calls each afternoon, visiting other wives of government officials. Lucy Mercer and her mom were now living in Washington D.C.  When in late 1913 Lucy Mercer was hired part time to help Eleanor as her Social Secretary, the children liked her too.  By now there were five.  So did Franklin, who also started giving her work.  He was 34 years old.

By 1916, World War I era, Lucy and Franklin were in love. He kept delaying his visit to Campobello Island. In 1917 Eleanor was still oblivious and having Lucy over for dinners and including eligible men as guests. But the dutiful wife pickled up a vibe and fired her.  Five days later FDR found the way to keep her around.  He got Lucy hired as a Yeoman  (or Yoemanette) 3rd class (F) Serial 1160, in the Navy, with a year taken off her age of 26 to his 35.  She was enlisted.  In uniform now, she also earned enough money to pay the rent for her and her mother.  She still went to the Roosevelts home and did work for Franklin in Eleanor's absence.

Among the gossips in their family and social circle the affair was known. Certain people were providing them places to meet up and invited them to social events as a couple.  Yet Lucy in 1917 also met Winthrop Rutherfurd, an older and rich man, a widower with six children who needed a mom. As the passion of their relationship heated up, Franklin and Lucy became reckless.  Lucy was a Catholic and there was speculation that the two were just sweethearts, not sexually involved.  But shortly after Lucy got promoted as a Yoeman because of her perfect work, she was suddenly discharged from the Navy by Special Order of the Secretary of the Navy. Clearly some people thought what Franklin was doing to Eleanor was wrong and wanted to break them up.  As a result Lucy had to go work for Franklin at his office and he he had to support her.

In the summer of 1918, with World War I keeping him busy, he left town for a couple months.  Eleanor found the letters that Lucy had written to Franklin in his absence. She was utterly devastated, injured emotionally, psychologically, and physically, and become so ill she could not stomach even a Communion wafer. He arrived home ill so she waited till he was well to confront him.  She offered him a divorce.  Adultery at the time was considered tolerable but divorce not.  Now her ally, Franklin's mother said she would cut him off financially if he divorced.  What of his political ambition?  FDR lied to Lucy, saying that Eleanor would not give him a divorce. Nor did he explain that in order to avoid divorce he had agreed to give her up as well as never again sleep in the same bed as Eleanor...

Winthrop Rutherfurd was a great catch though 29 years older than Lucy Mercer.  In 1919, the handsome and debonair man who once courted Consuelo Vanderbilt before she married the 9th Duke of Marlborough (Blenheim Palace), was in his late 50's.  He had homes in Washington, New York, Paris - and an estate in New Jersey.  He was one of their set.  Once friends with Eleanor's father and President Theodore Roosevelt, her cousin.  He supposedly had affairs until he settled down to be married near 40 years old in 1902 to the Vice President's daughter. She had died.

In 1920 Lucy was engaged to marry him and didn't want Franklin to find out in the newspapers so she asked that he hear about it in passing during a social visit of some mutual friends.  Apparently when Franklin did hear about it, he was as we say today, tweaked.

In her marriage to Winthrop, Lucy found love and position. The six children Winthrop had prior to their marriage loved her.  She and Winthrop had one child of their own, a daughter. The relationship endured until his death.

But, she and Franklin kept in touch.  He had a massive cerebral hemorrhage and she packed up and left - perhaps not wanting to be found there at his end where his family should be. She called from the road to learn he had indeed died.

And so the saga went.  Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. He left half his estate to his wife, Eleanor, and half to, not Lucy, who was well to do in her own right due to her marriage, and half to Missy LeHand.  Lucy died of Leukemia at the age of 57, on July 31, 1948.

DORCAS HARDIN OBITUARY in THE WASHINGTON POST

Makes no mention of Paul Mellon...WASHINGTON POST - January 20 2006 DORCAS HARDIN

EXCERPT: "Known for her sunny personality and her sense of style, Mrs. Hardin was described in a 1949 Washington Post article as the "best dressmaker designer" in the city. In 1954, when it was difficult to come by designer clothing in Washington stores, she decided to open an exclusive dress shop that would cater to the city's prominent women.

Her small, tony boutique, called Dorcas Hardin, opened on Dumbarton Avenue in 1954. She carried clothing by designers Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Ben Zuckerman, James Galanos and Pauline Trigere at a time when their creations were otherwise available only in New York."

A note: Bunny outlived Dorcas

LA IS THE MISTRESS CAPITOL OF THE UNITED STATES! TOP TEN MISTRESS CITIES

Ashley Madison site :  MISTRESSES IN THE UNITED STATES "L.A. beat out Washington, DC (take that, Capitol Hill interns!) for the distinction, as well as Dallas, TX, and West Palm Beach, FL, among others. Within the confines of our fair city, the highest percentage of mistresses are concentrated where the wealthy have a lot to spend on their sidepiece dalliances -- in the 90210 zip code.

The founder of Ashley Madison, Noel Biderman, has some profound speculation as to why we're so cavalier about getting involved with married men here in the Southland.

"LA operates on an entirely different plane than most other major cities," he said. "Many women who live there have their sights set on other priorities besides just marriage and family, therefore pursuing a relationship with someone who already has a wife and kids suits their lifestyle perfectly."

Here is how the cities ranked:
1) Los Angeles California
2) Washington DC
3) Phoenix Arizona
4) Tampa Florida
5) San Francisco California
6) Dallas Texas
7) Raleigh (North or South Carolina?)
8) Milwaukee Wisconsin
9) West Palm Beach Florida
10) Louisville Kentucky

Don't personally know of anyone who met their person on the Internet but the Ashley Madison site is supposed to be very popular for women who are looking for a sugar daddy...

A WONDERFULLY WORDED ARTICLE ABOUT MONICA LEWINSKY and PAMELA HARRIMAN and BILL CLINTON

Tripped across this article from 1998 by Maureen Dowd who is a respected journalist and fabulous writer. Now please read the whole thing, linked above, but here is a snippet:

"Bill Clinton's Presidency crystallized with one courtesan. It shattered with another.

His plans to win the White House came together amid the Aubussons, Baccarat, seven-foot-tall sterling torcheres and 18th-century hand-painted Chinese wallpaper in the Georgetown drawing room of Pamela Harriman. His plans for a great legacy fell apart in the windowless hallway near the Oval Office with Monica Lewinsky."
Check out my previous posts about Pamela Digby Churchill Harriman:

Commentary: If you read about Pamela Digby Churchill Harriman, you will know that though she was born to wealth and station in life that Monica Lewinsky was not, even she had her awkward period. As a depubtant in England she was considered to have a bit too much baby fat and to not have been the most popular. Things changed for her when she married the son of Winston Churchill, though he was a lousy husband. She had one child - a son - lost the baby fat and went from there. Eventually Pamela, the camillian, who had not been thought all that well of by the Kennedys, converted to Catholocism to marry a man she was mistress to. When he married someone else, she stuck with the religion. She became a fundraiser for the Democaratic party and for Bill Clinton...
