It was proposed in 1832 that Kamanele, the Governor of John Adams Kuakini, would be the most suitable in age, rank, and education for his Queen. Kamanele died in 1834 before the wedding take place. Instead, Kamehameha III chose to marry Chiefess Kalama Hakaleleponi Kapakuhaili, of no relation. Kalama's father was a harbor pilot Naihekukui, giving her a much lower ranking family background. After his sister's death in late 1836, he married Kalama February 4, 1837, in a Christian ceremony, Kamehameha and Kalama had two children. ... Both died as infants. He and his mistress, Jane Lahilahi, a daughter of his father's advisor John Young, had twin illegitimate sons; Keoua who died young, and Albert Kanulakea, who lived to adulthood (1853-1902).

ELIA KAZAN : AN EXCERPT ON WHEN BARBARA'S SON WAS BORN

"On the second of January, 1962, I flew to Stockholm to publicize a film I'd recently completed, Splendor In The Grass.  The big studios were still doing things in style in those years, and we stayed at a hotel where we were attended by servants who looked as if I should be serving them.

On the day after our arrival I received a cable from New York  City informing me by a prearranged code, that I'd had a new son by a woman not my wife.  I can't remember that I was flustered. I went to a press conference and did my best to "push" my film."

At the time, Barbara continued to be married to her first husband, Larry.  The relationship with Kazan was a bit off and on, but ultimately, after the death of his first wife, Molly, who had been married to Elia for many years, he was free to marry Barbara.  Despite his having had many affairs of shorter duration while married to Molly, and while involved with Barbara, Elia married Barbara.

Missy here: Ultimately I feel that Elia Kazan was not a man who could be faithful to any one woman. He had earned respect as a film director and certainly met a lot of women, famous and not. I keep wondering though how much the sexual revolution and a new urge for sexual exploration and "loving the one you're with" had to do with the choices that these people made to accept what would have been considered to be marital infidelity or adultery just a few years earlier.

Are we "liberated" by having sex with whomever we wish? Does a man prone to Mistresses get a new one after he marries one?  I'm not sure we have the answers to these questions a half a century later. 

SUGGESTIONS NEEDED! SPANISH MISTRESSES! KEPT SPANISH MEN?

I would love my readers to leave the names of SPANISH (or "Hispanic") Mistresses, including women in Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, preferable with references to articles or books about these people. This is a subject that is sadly neglected at Mistress Manifesto BlogSpot. Now, there may be some literature out there published in Spanish that I can't read without a translator, but if the work is on Google Books, that might work!  Another option might be books read on YouTube videos, or YouTube Documentaries.

When I look at my stats and see the countries that my readers are coming from, well, I just know there are many people reading (perhaps secretly) in Spain and Spanish speaking countries!

"A practical guide for every guy WHO WANTS TO BE ONE, for every girl who wants to BUILD ONE!" (Woo! this sounds promising!)

This book is straightforward, hilarious, and I love the living color "dime store novel" or "potboiler" art illustrations throughout!

Is the advice wise? Well, let's just say that a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down!

And even if you HATE the message at times, you are too busy laughing at Felicity Huffman's and Patricia Wolff's way of sockin it to ya, to really complain.

How far do they go? How about telling you ladies to trim those pubies!?

Chapter 5 stands out! It is One Page, One Word. The title is WHEN DO YOU BECOME A BOYFRIEND AND WHO DECIDES ?

The chapter reads "SHE DOES!"
Woo! Woo! Woooooo ooo o!

CORA PEARL : READ HER MEMOIR HERE! : MISTRESS OF THE MONTH

This month we celebrate the 19th century prostitute?/ courtesan/? mistress? CORA PEARL, born Emma Elizabeth Crouch.


Cora has been the subject of a number of blogs and articles on the net, and because she's so popular and so covered, I hesitated. Finding Cora's own memoir, which she wrote herself, on Google Books convinced me to go ahead and elect Cora. I'm linking to this book, which you can read on line. Cora's memoir was published in London but I think it was translated from French.

So click on the title or at the bottom of this post to the link, and you'll soon be reading it and learn not only about her life and her world view but the way women who started out poor lived in the 19th century!  

Cora tells the story that she was 15 when she was taken to bed by a man who could have been 35, who she first saw in a market. Later, though she started out curious, she was disgusted. In Cora's day many poor women were considered to be unmarriageable because they didn't have a dowry or, out of innocence or hunger, they found sex to be the only way to resolve their destitution and couldn't marry because they had lost their virginity before marriage, even if they were molested or raped.

Today women, especially in Western Countries, have so many more opportunities to become educated, have businesses, or make their own way in life. Many women today have no need or desire for marriage. In those days even a honorably married woman, who became a widow and who didn't find another husband quickly, unless they inherited money, went to the street. (There were probably more loveless marriages in those situations than there are today.)


Cora was a serial mistress known for her dinner parties.  She would have herself brought out on a large silver dish, naked and reclining on a bed of violets, as "desert." That Cora captures our imagination a century later says something about her appeal.

This month we'll read what other authors have also said of Cora.
