CLIFFORD AND EDITH DISCUSS THEIR POST JAIL MARRIAGE

By reading Clifford Irving's memoir The Hoax, about almost pulling off the publishing ruse of  a Howard Hughes autobiography, I learned that the simple idea of writing the autobio turned into a complex scheme with twists and turns, and required innovation, some money, and some help. It required that he lie, especially under pressure.  There was something enjoyable about the adventure and reading about it too.

His wife Edith, knowing she had competition for Clifford, might have jumped into the game of it, just to show she was his partner in life. Willing to wear a disguise, travel, and cash altered checks made out to Hughes, she ended up serving time in Switzerland, but was allowed to paint while in prison.  When she came out, she and Clifford had an open marriage for a time, but did divorce.
