I believe that we need to know the difference between honesty and brutal honesty, which is aimed at hurting people. Practitioner's of brutal honesty will use the excuse "Well, I was just being honest." No they weren't. They were just being childish and unsophisticated, at worst rude and knowingly hurtful.
BE AWARE OF MANIPULATORS! AND DON'T YOU BE ONE!
