MISSY ASKS YOU ! WILL YOU SPEND THE HOLIDAYS ALONE ? LOVE YOUR OWN COMPANY!
If you haven't yet, it's time to make some plans so that you are not alone for the holidays, that is, if you don't want to be. (Many very busy people long to have some peace and quiet in solitude.) If you haven't, learning to love your own company is the key to solitude rather than loneliness.
The holidays offer many opportunities to keep in touch with local and long distance friends, even if it's just attending to your holiday card list and adding a personal note.
I'M A BELIEVER IN THE GOOD OLD FASHIONED, STAMPED, ENVELOPED, GREETING CARD, one with at least a short personal note. E-mail or e-cards will never replace the well designed papery card! Not among people with taste!
Are there any movies you've been wanting to see AT THE THEATRE?
Home DVD nights be banned! Time to take yourself out to the movies, the biggest screen, but don't indulge in the extra large popcorn which will put fat on your tummy that only Santa Claus would envy!
Is there something special you've been hoping someone else would gift you? Maybe it's time to indulge yourself a little. Buying something special for yourself, when you can afford to, is a wonderful way to stimulate our poor economy. Maybe you are or used to be a retail sales clerk on commission yourself?
If you are going to spend the days between Christmas Eve and New Years Eve alone and are thinking you might get depressed, think vacation. If you can't leave town, make this a time to become a tourist of your own town Now is the time to go to art galleries, museums, and concerts.
Don't forget to invite your friends.
It's not too late to create a wonderful holiday season for yourself!

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF : MY SHORT LIST OF MISTRESSES EXPANDING ALL THE TIME!
When I started this blog I had a short list of mistresses and most of them were in the Historical Mistress category but as time goes by more and more mistresses emerge in the news, often because they out themselves by writing books or are written about. After all, most mistresses are in secret relationships, as secret as those who keep the secret. After all, we aren't ready for polygamy to be legal. We're still struggling with gays being allowed to marry legally.
One of the discussion issues about Mistresses is defining who is or is not a Mistress. MOST OF THE WOMEN WHO ARE CALLED MISTRESSES IN THE PRESS are NOT! Of all of the modern women who have suffered due to this label is Monica Lewinsky, who was simply in an affair with President William Jefferson Clinton when he was in office, though she may have felt love for him that he didn't have for her. Strangely, it is his denial of her that has set her apart, and possibly made her unmarriagable. Every adulterer is not a mistress or mister, and not every mistress is an adulterer!
In History many mistresses of Kings and other Aristocrats were married (some would say Married OFF) or acknowledged financially. It was considered good for the family. (An example or two is Mary and Ann Bolyn.) Some men, including husbands (think Camilla Parker Bowles' husband Charlie) were tolerant or delighted that their women were of interest to men with power and those men with power sometimes sent the husband away on some official duty but often rewarded them.
These days many mistresses are self supporting.
These days some women are keeping men.
These days some women mistress for a time because it suits their time of life, and move on into marriage or singlehood on purpose.
These days when women have more power over their own lives than ever (though not as much as the feminists would idealize) some are choosing to be with men who cannot or will not marry them.
WHY?
I think it comes down to LOVE.
There isn't the benefits of marriage to a mistress that wives can have, and many a wife is staying in a loveless marriage for one reason or another, often financial. So whose to throw the first stone at another woman who has financial as well as other interests in a relationship?
Earlier in the year I said that I might go a couple months in 2012 without naming a Mistress of the Month and it never happened because there were too many mistresses in the news to ignore. This month I'll be focusing on the holidays and I hope you will be too!

MISSY's Q and A : SHOULD SHE ASK HIM TO PAY FOR HER EDUCATION?
Dear Missy,
I'm a college student and have been putting myself through with part time jobs. Since I started my relationship with "Jared" I cut my hours way back. I'm a waitress, and now I don't think I can afford to stay in school. Jared is an attorney who seems to be doing really well and I've never asked him for anything. He's given me some expensive gifts, jewelry and a watch, but nothing as practical as tuition. I don't know if I want to actually ASK, you know? Jared by the way is not married, but he has also told me he doesn't want to get married and prefers I be his mistress - his word not mine.
Alice in Vermont
Dear Alice in Vermont,
Well, Jared has made it a point of telling you that he doesn't plan to marry you, or maybe anyone. You should take him at his word. He also says he wants you to be his mistress. Have you ever asked him what he thinks the difference between a wife and a mistress is, or what his expectations are of a mistress - you?
Many mistresses do find themselves having to be or stay flexible so that they can spend time with their man. You must however take care of yourself, your education, and your career, unless he has arranged to support you and for a long time and as a lawyer he knows how to create the legal documents that can do that. As things are, first it will be dropping out of school and then it will be loosing your apartment or working full time to stay there. Seems to me staying in school is the thing for you to make happen and if selling the jewelry and watch would pay tuition I would.
So my first suggestion is that you talk to Jared and tell him that you have to take on more hours at your job in order to afford school and that you're sure he understands that. Then start working more. Within a few weeks he is going to realize that if he wants to see you and he wants you to live around his availability something is going to have to change. More than one mistress has been put through college by her man, so don't be shy about that just get the money in cash in hand and go pay the tuition with it first thing - if he offers. Don't even suggest that you'd be willing to quit school for him! If Jared takes his leave of your life because you can't be out with him and afford school, let him go.

2012 : MISSY LOOKS BACK ON THIS YEARS POPULAR POSTS AND THINKS AHEAD TO 2013
I'm not going to elect a MISTRESS OF THE MONTH this month.
Not that there aren't more mistresses to write about!
Instead I decided to look at the Google Blogger stats and write about some of the most popular mistresses and posts over the last year!
This may surprise you, but Jesse Jackson Sr.'s, Karin Stanford (sometimes the spelling of her given name is Karen and sometimes you see her surname as Stafford but I think Stanford is right) seems to be the most popular!
As for this blog, MISTRESS MANIFESTO, no other mistress seems to have gotten as many hits! That makes Karen the most popular mistress that I've included in my pantheon.
Next, when it comes to number of hits is a brief mention of BOB HOPE'S GIRLFRIENDS. (I'll have to do more on that subject in 2013!)
In 2013 I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO HEAR FROM MORE OF YOU and reach deeper into my mail bag! I'd love to give a few more people advice - or at least my point of view - but I know that so many of you are in the closet about your alternative lifestyle. I want to respect that, which is why almost all the mistresses I've written about are public, historical, or otherwise documented persons. I wouldn't out someone just because they wrote to me!
WE ARE STILL TRYING TO DEFINE "MISTRESS!"
We all seem to agree that a mistress is a kept woman who is involved with a married man and who receives substantial financial support from him, but we all know that a person, male or female, whatever their sexuality, can be a mistress (or mantress) without being involved with a married person. Some mistresses of very wealthy men will never have to work for a living in their lives, others are kept for a short period of time or are self supporting.
Yes, there are just so many different ways to be a mistress.
Yet there are some people that the media has or does label "mistress" who just never were. One of those people is Monica Lewinsky, who had an affair with President Bill Clinton while he was in office that appears to have been a one sided love. (You can read more about Monica by using the Google search feature installed on this blog! We can't wait to read the book she's working on!) A mere affair does not make a mistress!
Perhaps more than anything, being a mistress is a mentality, a way of looking at love and life, a choice for some and fate for others!

HOW TO NEVER LOOK FAT AGAIN by CHARLA KRUPP : WHAT TO WEAR IF YOU'RE BIG BUSTED : MISTRESS MANIFESTO BOOK REVIEW
Eat too much at Thanksgiving? Expecting to gain ten pounds as you nibble at all those holiday parties? Rather than wait for the diet to work, why not dress to appear slim?
One of my friends who's African American was looking at the cover of Oprah magazine recently and she said to me "This has to be Photoshopped." She meant Ophrahs' body on this particular magazine. The fact is that Oprah has the best dressers, stylists, makeup artists, and cosmeticians working with her on a daily basis, for her show and for photo shoots that land pictures on the cover of her own magazine so who, with all that, could not be coaxed into beauty? We all know part of big story is her yoyo dieting...

HOW TO NEVER LOOK FAT AGAIN
Over 1000 Ways to Dress Thinner - Without Dieting
Charla Krupp C 2010
This is a delightful and pragmatic book that has fashion strategies for all sorts of "fat problems" from your one end to the other. This book also has leads to good buys for products Carla personally buys. Here is one small example. (I know a lot of women want to have larger breasts and many have surgery to have that look, but there are also a lot of women who are naturally big breasted who can't find clothes to fit!)
Things that make you look fat with a Big Bust
1) Patch pockets over the breasts.
2) Tucking in tops.
3) Long necklaces that end below the bust.
4) Tightness across the chest.
5) Turtlenecks.
6) Excessive cleavage - pushed together breasts.
7) Tight T shirts.
8) strapless gowns, tops, and swimsuits.
9) Across the body messenger or shoulder bags.
10 Bulky Jackets and sweaters.
Some pluses : T-shirt smooth bras, wearing jackets and tops that reach the hipbone in length

LA IS THE MISTRESS CAPITOL OF THE UNITED STATES! TOP TEN MISTRESS CITIES
Ashley Madison site : MISTRESSES IN THE UNITED STATES "L.A. beat out Washington, DC (take that, Capitol Hill interns!) for the distinction, as well as Dallas, TX, and West Palm Beach, FL, among others. Within the confines of our fair city, the highest percentage of mistresses are concentrated where the wealthy have a lot to spend on their sidepiece dalliances -- in the 90210 zip code.
The founder of Ashley Madison, Noel Biderman, has some profound speculation as to why we're so cavalier about getting involved with married men here in the Southland.
"LA operates on an entirely different plane than most other major cities," he said. "Many women who live there have their sights set on other priorities besides just marriage and family, therefore pursuing a relationship with someone who already has a wife and kids suits their lifestyle perfectly."
Here is how the cities ranked:
1) Los Angeles California
2) Washington DC
3) Phoenix Arizona
4) Tampa Florida
5) San Francisco California
6) Dallas Texas
7) Raleigh (North or South Carolina?)
8) Milwaukee Wisconsin
9) West Palm Beach Florida
10) Louisville Kentucky
Don't personally know of anyone who met their person on the Internet but the Ashley Madison site is supposed to be very popular for women who are looking for a sugar daddy...

NAN BRITTON WRITES THE FIRST TELL ALL BOOK ABOUT SEX WITH A MARRIED PRESIDENT - AND A DNA UPDATE!
page 98
"When Warren Harding dies of heart failure in 1923, in San Francisco,.... "The Harding family made the mistake of cutting off financial support for Britton and her child. Britton had no choice but to write America's first kiss and tell book, THE PRESIDENTS DAUGHTER. Even if the book had not featured scandalous revelations about an adulterous president, it would have ignited controversy with its frank discussion of illicit sex, birth control and abortion. At the request of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, the police seized the unreleased copes of the book and the printing plates. Britton sued and won the write to publish her book which became an instant best seller.

PRESIDENT WARREN HARDING and CARRIE PHILLIPS and NAN BRITTON
page 92
"For 15 years, Carrie Phillips held out the delusional hope that Harding would quit politics, divorce his wife and marry her. Her great fear was that he would run for President - once in the White House divorce would be impossible..."
Harding assured her he wasn't going to run. So when he did, she admitted her affair to her husband, who, it is said, helped her blackmail Harding.
"Harding responded by writing a letter to Phillips offering her an ultimatum. He could retire completely from politics "to avoid disgrace in the public eye" and never speak to her again, or he could continue to run for president and pay her big bucks. He promised, "I will pay you $5,000 ( $57,000 today) per year in March each year, so long as I am in the public service." Harding's salary as senator was $7000. The president in the 1920's made $65,000. If he won the presidency, there would be plenty of money to cover Phillips' hush money payments..."
Meanwhile Harding had another mistress, Nan Britton, who had a child by him.

RACHEL GREENWALD : HAVE HIM AT HELLO
Who can resist a book with a subtitle "Confessions from 1000 guys about what makes them fall in love... or never call back"?
HAVE HIM AT HELLO is
C 2009 and 2010 Rachel Greenwald and published by Three Rivers Press
Have you indulged in DATE BREAKERS? We have her experience (she makes guys who she matchmakes give EXIT INTERVIEWS about their dates) to thank for a lot of advice that is probably right.
If you come off as a BOSS LADY you are way too controlling. IF YOU'RE THE PARK AVENUE PRINCESS maybe you should ask about him and his family instead of taking about what you bought at an expensive store that day.
I don't know about you but I think relationships are pretty simple to start. A person who is in love wants to know everything there is to know about "the one." But there is way to keep someone interested in you and that is to be interesting and the best way to be interesting is to be interested! - Missy

LARRY FLYNT and DAVID EISENBACH SAY THE SEX LIVES OF OUR POLITCIANS AND LEADERS SHOULD NOT MATTER : ONE NATION UNDER SEX
ONE NATION UNDER SEX suggests that maybe Abe Lincoln was bisexual and certainly Benjamin Franklin was a promiscuous person. Dolley Madison was notorious in early America for sleeping with three presidents, one vice president, and a multitude of congressmen and diplomats, Thomas Jefferson was outed for his relationship with slave "mistress" Sally Hemmings, Franklin Roosevelt's affair with Lucy Mercer almost broke his marriage and destroyed his political career, and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and his Associate Director Clyde Tolson were a homosexual pair of lifelong bachelors.

CARRIE PHILLIPS : MISTRESS of AMERICAN PRESIDENT WARREN HARDING : MISTRESS OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER 2012
UPDATE 2015 NBC NEWS - DNA PROVES PRESIDENT HARDING FATHERED CHILD OUT OF WEDLOCK with NAN BRITTON
EXCERPT:
PREVIOUS POST : CARRIE PHILLIPS, MISTRESS OF PRESIDENT WARREN HARDING
"Neither Harding nor the object of his adoration, Carrie Phillips, could have imagined that the affair they began when he was a lieutenant Governor and she was a lonely housewife would end with him in the White House and federal agents accusing her of espionage. Theirs is a story of love, passion, espionage, and sexual blackmail."
- page 86 of ONE NATION UNDER SEX "How the Private Lives of Presidents, First Ladies and Their Lovers Changed the Course of American History."
EXCERPT:
Genetic analysis shows that President Warren G. Harding ... fathered a child out of wedlock, with long-rumored mistress Nan Britton, according to AncestryDNA, a DNA-testing division of Ancestry.com.
Britton set off a Jazz Age sex scandal when she went public with her tale of forbidden love in the White House, boldly publishing her story in a 1927 best-selling memoir, "The President's Daughter." But historians long questioned her claims, and Harding defenders vilified her as a liar for nearly 90 years.
Based on DNA from Britton's grandson and descendants of Harding, the results are 99.9 percent certain, Ancestry.com said. The findings were first reported Thursday by The New York Times.

So goes the story, which authors Larry Flynt and David Eisenbach spent considerable book pages on, of President Warren Harding, a romantic, who began his affair in 1905 when he was 40 and Carrie Phillips, also married, was 30. The place was Marion, Ohio, a small town to live in and escape. Six years into the affair, Mrs. Florance Harding offered her husband a divorce, which he refused. He continued his affair while in the Senate. Phillips herself was outspoken about politics, in particular the war effort on 1917, and she was rewarded with FBI surveillance. People in Marion said she was a German spy! Harding couldn't muzzle Carrie. Their affair lasted 15 years!
Now as you may know, a Presidential Election here in the United States is just a few days away. Several Presidents have had Mistresses, and I don't mean a Monica Lewinsky type of affair either. I found One Nation Under Sex to be a very interesting book, so I'll be quoting it and provide a link to the official book page. I don't think either Presidential candidate -Obama or Romney - will have an affair or a mistress while President. They can't risk it, not after what happened with Monica and President William Jefferson Clinton, but Romney is from a religion that started out with polygamy, so...

RUTH KLIGMAN'S NEW YORK TIMES OBITUARY
It begins "Ruth Kligman, an abstract painter who for decades seemed to know everyone and be everywhere in the art world and who was the lone survivor of the 1956 car crash that killed Jackson Pollock, her lover at the time, died Monday at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was 80 and lived in Manhattan..."
Ruth was an artist herself, and I find that women in the arts are never as well represented in galleries or museums as men artists. I have met a number of men with aspirations in the arts and music who have been or are kept, at least for a time. They may not be married, their keeper may not be married, but they are financed, introduced to people who can help them, and generally supported in other ways. None of these men has seemed to be the least bit apologetic or insecure. They seem to feel that their talent deserves support. - Missy

MONICA LEWINSKY BOOK SOLD FOR TWELVE MILLION
MONICA LEWINSKY GETS 12 MILLION - YAHOO NEWS
A few months back I said that MONICA LEWINSKY was not a mistress to President William "Bill" Jefferson Clinton. No, their relationship was an affair. Special to her. Not so special to Clinton who distanced himself calling her "that woman." Never mind the age difference and the difference in power.
Today the breaking news is that she will be paid $12 Million for her memoir. I'm happy for Monica. She paid an unfair price for her affair, one of those being that if she were not a notorious woman she would likely have found love in all the right places by now. If she is condemned to singlehood or loneliness (and not everyone who is unpartnered is lonely or even looking for a relationship) then at least allow her to be well off for the rest of her life!

THOMAS KINKADE PAINTER OF LIGHT : "MISTRESS" AMY PINTO-WALSH
Maybe you've heard, but Thomas Kinkade, the artist known as "The Painter of Light," who was worth 60 million when he suddenly died of an accidental combination of booze and Valium. He had moved on and in with his mistress Amy Pinto-Walsh, much to the humiliation of his wife. Linking here to one of many article about another fight between a wife - in this case an ex wife - and a "mistress" in this case a woman who has a good career of her own and whose man came to live with her.
The press is using the term mistress, and once again I'm feeling that the term has been used improperly. In today's culture the term is often used to describe people who would be best called one night stands or affairs. In this case, Kinkade left a marriage and was planning another one.
"Pinto-Walsh, who was called a gold-digger by the estranged Mrs Kinkade, said after the painter’s death that the two were planning to wed after his divorce was finalised.
In April, lawyers portrayed Mr Kinkade's girlfriend as a ruthless gold digger who is out to 'tear down' the late artist's reputation and do irreparable damage to his family."

HELEN GURLEY BROWN PASSED AWAY RECENTLY
HELEN GURLEY BROWN, famous for being the editor of COSMOPOLITAN magazine for many years, passed away recently. The editorial decisions she made for over 30 years informed women that they could be sexual before they married, if they married at all, that they could have not just jobs but careers, and that it was great to be independent and self-supporting.
Helen was famous also for writing SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL, a book that was considered to be a part of the sexual revolution years ago (think early 1960's) when society began to change the expectation that a woman would wait until she was married to have sex.
Our lifestyles have changed a whole lot since then.
Contraception and Abortion are available like they never were in the days when becoming pregnant without marriage could ruin your life. (Unwed women were sent away to maternity homes to have babies and were often forced to give them up for adoption. Abortion was illegal and often unsafe enough to kill a woman. You had to be rich and connected to get the name and address of a doctor who knew what he was doing. Contraception choices were more limited and just for married women, so young unmarried women would fake an engagement when they went to the gynecologist. Most women did not have careers. Even if they went to college, their employment usually ended with their motherhood. Men usually made enough money so that their wives could be stay at home moms. Being a wife and mother were thought to be the great aspiration for any woman.
I wonder, but will never know for sure, if mistresses were more prevalent then than they are now. Helen tried it, with a man she did not love, for a short period of time, and hated it.

A MISTRESS AND A WIFE FIGHT OVER A PAINTING : MISTRESS RUTH KLIGMAN
Vanity Fair - September issue - devotes an article to the story - and so I elect artist Jackson Pollock's mistress Ruth Kligman, as September's Mistress of the Month. As I've said before, there are plenty of historical mistresses, but there are also plenty of modern-day mistresses and they keep making the news if not history!
You know, most Americans claim to loath mistresses. While gay pride parades go happily down the street, the mistress is hidden away. It's presumed that the man is married, that he's rich, that it's heterosexual, that it's "just a fling," that he has a madonna - whore complex. Mistresses are called "home-wreckers," even though the marital relationship may have been "wrecked" for years. Sometimes these things are true, but mistresses are too common for them to always be true. For some people being in a love triangle is simply an alternative lifestyle. It's not for everyone. It's not always for long. And some common ordinary, even conservative women, have found themselves there when they least expected it would ever happen to them.
Despite the denial, films, books, and news about mistresses are just so interesting. Maybe it's just a great fantasy for some people. Maybe it's a lot about sex. Maybe the fiction mistress is safely far far away in a make believe place that even a wife enjoys the read. It's when a mistress isn't make believe that the uproar often starts.
Reading author's like psychologist Dr. Toni Grant, we learn that there is a bit of "Courtesan" in every woman, if she chooses to coax it out. Reading Rabbi Shmuley Boteach we learn that married couples can keep their relationship alive by pretending affairs. Reading Robert Greene we learn seduction is an art and science and philosophy.
Some of our mistresses have lives that are cautionary tales. Some have had a great ride and don't want to get off the roller coaster.
Linking to an interview of author Leslie M. M. Blume, whose Vanity Fair article introduces us to artist Jackson Pollock, his wife, and his mistress!

MIMI SPENCER'S BOOK : "101 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU DIET" IS LUSCIOUS : MUSHROOMS!
Luscious! Doesn't that word make you think of food? I was just reading this book by Mimi Spencer, an award winning UK based fashion and beauty journalist. And it was so very wise and funny! It wasn't just about food sensibility. I was about having a sense about yourself. About what works and just doesn't.
Here is one of so very many passages I'd love to excerpt!
Including the pages entitled THE DOS and DON'TS of SHOES.
The book is C 2009 and published by Rodale.
Missy
On page 117 it says: "Favor mushrooms over meat: A study at John Hopkins Weight Management Center has come to the remarkable conclusion that eating meals made of mushrooms - lasagna, chili, whatever - rather than lean ground beef results in fewer calories being consumed at each meal. Meals made with meat averaged 420 additional calories and 30 additional grams of fat per day. Another study found that if men substitute a 4 ounce portobello mushroom for a 4 ounce grilled hamburger everything they ate a burger over the course of a year, and they didn't change anything else they could have saved more than 18,000 calories and nearly 3,000 grams of fat - the equivalent of 5.3 pounds, or 30 sticks of butter. That is a heck of a lot of fat but, one has to notice, quite a lot of mushrooms too. Perhaps take a modest approach, and make an occasional swap."

ROBERT GREENE : TYPES OF ANTI-SEDUCERS
Are you a Brute, a Suffocater, Moralizer, Tightwad, Bumbler, Windbag, Reactor, Vulgarian? (Of all of these it seems to me that the Vulgarian can most change their behavior!)
pages 134-135
"Vulgarians are inattentive to the details that are so important in seduction. You can see this in their personal appearance - their clothes are tasteless by any standard - and in their actions: they do not know what it is sometimes better to control oneself and refuse to give into one's impulses. Vulgarians will blab, saying anything in public. They have no sense of timing and are rarely in harmony with your tastes. Indiscretion, is a sure sign of the Vulgarian (talking to others of your affair, for example); it may seem impulsive, but it's real source is their radical selfishness, their inability to see themselves as others see them. More than just avoiding Vulgarians, you must make yourself their opposite - tact, style, and attention to detail area all basic requirements of a seducer..."

ROBERT GREENE : THE ART OF SEDUCTION : BOOK EXERPT
page 171 Excerpt
"Life is short, and should not be wasted pursuing and seducing the wrong people. The choice of target is critical; it is the set up of the seduction and it will determine everything else that follows. The perfect victim does not have certain facial features, or the same taste in music, or similar goals in life. That is how a banal seducer chooses his or her targets. The perfect victim is the person who stirs you in a way that cannot be explained in words, whose effect on you has nothing to do with superficialities. He or she often has a quality that you yourself lack, and may even secretly envy - The Presidente, for example, has an innocence that Valmont long ago lost or never had. There should be a little bit of tension - the victim may fear you a little, even slightly dislike you. Such tension is full of erotic potential and will make the seduction much livelier. Be more creative in choosing your prey, and you will be rewarded with a more exciting seduction. Of course, it means nothing if the potential victim is not open to your influence. Test the person first..."
Penguin Books C Robert Greene and Joost Elffers, 2001.
(The use of the term victim, is, I believe, if you read the book, almost charming, but maybe it's meant to be charmingly vampirish?)

KLONDIKE KATE PDF PROFILE
A PDF FILE ON KATE! It Begins:
"The woman who was eventually dubbed the ‘Flame of the Yukon’,
‘Belle of the North’, and ‘Klondike Kate’, in Dawson City, Yukon,
was born Kathleen Eloisa Rockwell in Junction City, Oregon, in
1875 but had grown up in Spokane, Washington. Her stepfather
had stature in the community and the family lived in a large
mansion until economic failures caused tensions in the home.
Kate grew up as a bit of a tomboy and often played with boys rather
than members of her own sex. Of a rebellious nature, her parents
sent her to boarding schools and convents but the young woman
either ran away or was expelled. In the 1890's, after her mother
had divorced her husband, mother and daughter moved to New
York where Kate had an unsuccessful attempt as an entertainer."

DECLARATION FOR MISTRESSES - Secrets
"I know how to keep a secret!"
There are secrets you shouldn't keep. If someone is in danger for their life or sanity, maybe because they are being abused, that's a sick secret. The Penn State molestation revelations are an example of many people keeping sick secrets that allowed the molestations to go on, all in the name of school reputation and the pursuit of football.
However, in life there are many secrets that you keep simply out of loyalty to a friend who has confided in you and secrets you keep out of loyalty to yourself.
These days most people don't have much privacy or respect privacy like they did even 20 years ago. It's almost as if the common person has come to not know or realize that they do have and should have a private life. Strangers, or people who are not close friends seem to think that they can ask you anything and are entitled to answers.
Not everyone wants to live as if their every move was being recorded on videotape or like on a Reality TV show.
Additionally, we have forgotten to keep our own council. If your relationship must remain private and you are not up to keeping it private, this is not a relationship for you. Remember that it is not your place as a mistress to "out" your man. It is up to him to tell his wife, if and when he thinks it best. Some wives may give a phone call to let you know where they stand, but don't you call them. SIMPLY, it is NOT YOUR PLACE!

PANTAGES THEATRE : IF NOT FOR KLONDIKE KATE IT MIGHT HAVE NEVER BEEN : DOES SHE HAUNT THE THEATRE NOW?
Linking to the site! Here is the part about Klondike Kate.
"The Pantages Theater, built in 1918 by Alexander Pantages, was partially funded with financial assistance from his mistress, Kate Rockwell. Known as “Klondike Kate” and “Queen of the Yukon” she brought grace and style to the dance halls and saloons of the Pacific Northwest. She held miners spellbound with her flame dance and took their breath away when she appeared in a $1,500 French gown. Her lush ballads brought tears to their eyes and inspired a shower of gold nuggets.
Between performances she would dance with lonely miners for a dollar a dance and drink champagne with them for which she received $7.50 a bottle. “We were vendors of laughter and music to men who were starved for beauty and gaiety,” she said. “And we give good measure for all the gold the miners showered upon us.”
In the first four months she was in Dawson, Alaska, Kate received a hundred proposals of marriage, though the only man she wanted to marry was Alexander Pantages, who in the end, took her money and broke her heart. After Pantages married a woman of higher social standing, Kate sued him but never fully recovered her financial loss. She struggled for the rest of her life to make ends meet.
Rumor has it that a ghost haunts the Pantages. No one knows for sure whether it is Kate or Alexander, but one thing we do know is you'll never have a chance to solve this mystery without visiting the Historic Pantages Theater!"

KLONDIKE KATE : YUKON GOLD RUSH MISTRESS : MISTRESS OF THE MONTH
Kathleen Eloisa Rockwell = Klondike Kate
While the weather is much too hot, we think of someone really cool, Klondike Kate.It was the Gold Rush... the 1890's... Yukon Territory.
Sometimes a mistress depended on her man to support her. Sometimes he depended on her to bail him out or give him the money to invest. Marion Davies did it when Hearst needed a loan. Maybe it takes a crisis to show that loyalty? That kind of "I believe in you" Love? Kate was instrumental in keeping her Mister in business, when he founded the Pantages Theatre!
Kathleen Eloisa Rockwell is celebrated today at Klondike Kate contests in places like Wisconsin, where ladies with some old time flash sing and imitate the dance hall Kate. As is usually the case, this mistress keeps us fascinated.
Thing about Kate is that she was apparently not so refined, maybe even rough and tumble. That was the personality and character that allowed a woman to succeed in the risky atmosphere of boom or bust.

ROBERT GREENE : THE ART OF SEDUCTION : ON CORA PEARL
BOOK EXERPT FROM "THE ART OF SEDUCTION" by ROBERT GREENE
pages 59-60-61
"Born Emma Crouch in 1842 in England, from a respectable middle class family but her father abandoned the family in 1849 for immigration to America. " One day in 1856, when Emma was walking home from church, a well dressed gentleman invited her home for some cakes. She followed him to his house, where he proceeded to take advantage of her. The next morning this man, a diamond merchant, promised to set her up in a house of her own, treat her well, and give her plenty of money. She took the money but left him, determined to do what she had always wanted: never see her family again, never depend on anyone, and lead the grand life that her father had promised her.
With the money the diamond merchant had given her, Emma bought nice clothes and rented a cheap flat. Adopting the flamboyant name of CORA PEARL, she began to frequent London's Argyll Rooms, a fancy place where harlots and gentlemen rubbed elbows. The proprietor, a Mr. Gignell, took note of this newcomer to his establishment - she was so brazen for a young girl. At forty-five he was much older than she was, bu he decided to be her lover and protector, lavishing her with money and attention...
"Frequenting all the right places, Cora soon ca me to the attention of wealthy French gentlemen. ...As money began to pour in from her various conquests (the Duc de Mornay, heir to the Dutch throne; Prince Napoleon, cousin to the Emperor), Cora spent it on the most outrageous things - a multicolored carriage pulled by a team of cream-colored horses, a rose marbled bath tub... But money could not buy Cora's loyalty; she would leave a man on the slightest whim...
Antics like this made Cora the toast of Paris, and she reigned as the city's supreme courtesan for over a decade, until the Franco-Prussian War of 1879 put an end to the Second Empire."

DECLARATION FOR MISTRESSES - Setting the Stage
"My home (and office) will be clean, decorated, and arranged to set the stage for a beautiful life."
Your personal style may be unique but there are some things about decorating and housekeeping that can't be denied. Clean and sweet smelling is always right, be it that you burn exotic perfumed candles, keep fresh flowers on the table, or spray from a can. Clean sheets, be they fine cotton or silk, are always right, as is a neat desk (just try to have it organized before you leave for the weekend) with tasteful art done by real artists (shop your local art fair), healthy plants, and the latest electronics.
You don't need a lot of money to have style or taste or imagination. There are plentiful ideas in magazines on decorating. Paint, slip covers, some new draperies and pillows can liven the appearance of you home or office. You can even change these seasonally.
Some of us have time when we don't have money and money when we don't have time!

MARRY MONEY ?
Money issues sometimes break relationships, married or not, and money issues sometimes make relationships too. Few people want to admit that they are out to marry money, yet everything they do would say otherwise. While we learn about Cora Pearl and other mistresses - courtesans - reknown not only for their beauty, their liasons, their antics, or their extravagant spending, investing, or losses, we are sometimes inspired or scared into more conservative money management.

COURTESANS and OLD AGE : BOOK EXCERPT : THE BOOK OF COURTESANS
Page 121
... "Many courtesans were very good at financial planning. More than a few were able to end their days on this earth in the style to which they had become accustomed... Still others relied on the generosity of younger courtesans for whom they arranged liaisons. And from the 15th century through the 20th, another way existed for a courtesan to face old age with dignity. Like any profession, the art was handed down. If she were fortunate enough to have a daughter, a courtesan could train her in all the necessary skills and thus ensure a means of support in her old age."
"If ... motherly love this tradition seems wanting, one must remember that, under the weight of the restricted and difficult circumstances that women endured in this period, much of what any mother bequeathed her daughter was of mixed value. Never the less, even if being a courtesan was considered by some as preferable to marriage, there were mothers who did try to avoid passing on their professions."

CORA PEARL SUITE AT THE GROSVENOR HOTEL IN LONDON : KATIE HICKMAN, BIOGRAPHER, ON CORA
Katie Hickman says Cora Pearl reinvented herself and was "good at the theatre of life." Cora dyed her hair blue and dyed her dog's hair blue too. (Think Madonna!) Linking to an article by Kickman, Cora's biographer, says "Sexiness and availability were never enough to succeed as a courtesan. Cora was also an extremely good business woman. At the height of her success she was said to have earned over 50,000 francs a month (£90,000). She owned several houses in Paris, a chateau, a world-famous stable; her jewels alone were worth over a million francs. Cora was one of the first women in Paris to wear couture (she was an early patron of Worth); make-up; lingerie. Best of all - and I speak as an Englishwoman - she bested the French at their own game."

AN ARTICLE ABOUT CONTEMPORARY MISTRESS VICTORIA GRIFFIN AND CORA PEARL
A very well written and thought out article on Victoria Griffin which mentions Cora Pearl, also a serial mistress, and the differences between the Courtesans of the 19th century and the mistresses of today. Linking to a 1999 article in The Independent.

CORA PEARL : READ HER MEMOIR HERE! : MISTRESS OF THE MONTH
photo from GOOGLE IMAGES
This month we celebrate the 19th century prostitute?/ courtesan/? mistress? CORA PEARL, born Emma Elizabeth Crouch.
Cora has been the subject of a number of blogs and articles on the net, and because she's so popular and so covered, I hesitated. Finding Cora's own memoir, which she wrote herself, on Google Books convinced me to go ahead and elect Cora. I'm linking to this book, which you can read on line. Cora's memoir was published in London but I think it was translated from French.
So click on the title or at the bottom of this post to the link, and you'll soon be reading it and learn not only about her life and her world view but the way women who started out poor lived in the 19th century!
Cora tells the story that she was 15 when she was taken to bed by a man who could have been 35, who she first saw in a market. Later, though she started out curious, she was disgusted. In Cora's day many poor women were considered to be unmarriageable because they didn't have a dowry or, out of innocence or hunger, they found sex to be the only way to resolve their destitution and couldn't marry because they had lost their virginity before marriage, even if they were molested or raped.
Today women, especially in Western Countries, have so many more opportunities to become educated, have businesses, or make their own way in life. Many women today have no need or desire for marriage. In those days even a honorably married woman, who became a widow and who didn't find another husband quickly, unless they inherited money, went to the street. (There were probably more loveless marriages in those situations than there are today.)
Cora was a serial mistress known for her dinner parties. She would have herself brought out on a large silver dish, naked and reclining on a bed of violets, as "desert." That Cora captures our imagination a century later says something about her appeal.
This month we'll read what other authors have also said of Cora.
