COMING UP : THIS ROCK AND ROLL MISTRESS GOT DITCHED BY ONE OF THE FAB FOUR

and she sued for PALIMONY...

FAMOUS ROCK STARS often have mistresses. In the past here at MISTRESS MANIFESTO I've covered RUTH TRIANGIEL, Bob Dylan's mysterious muse and mistress who sued and won, and JERRY HALL, the mistress of sexaholic and cheap skate Mick Jagger, who accept a measly amount of money after a split we can't call a divorce because her marriage to Mick was declared invalid.  (Great news her marriage to Rupert!)  I've also covered the mistress of John Lennon, selected by his wife, Yoko, MAY PANG - who was left unemployed and with no good bye money at all.

Who could this be?

PROFESSOR XIE ZOUSHI SUGGESTS POOR CHINESE MEN SHOULD SHARE A WIFE?! MISSY HAS SOME STRONG OPINIONS!

DAILY MAIL - CHINESE MEN SHOULD SHARE A WIFE?

(check out my previous posts on CHINESE MISTRESSES!  Use the search feature embedded in the side bar to search within this blog using the word China, or for September 2015  Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi, or for January of 2011, Chinese concubines and Mistresses!)

EXCERPT:

A Chinese economics professor has made the daring suggestion that China's poorest bachelors should group together and share a wife.

Xie Zuoshi, a professor at Zhejiang University of Finance in eastern China, made the proposal in a post on his personal blog reported People's Daily Online.

The post was in response to the recently unveiled statistics that predicted China will have 30 million more men than women by 2020...

MISSY'S OPINION!

China's one child policy, which resulted in MILLIONS of female fetuses being aborted in favor of having just one SON, this incredible and horrible sexism in Chinese culture (which used to be played out by forms of infanticide such as throwing female babies down wells or smothered to death simply because it used to be that the FIRST CHILD had to be a SON) has now resulted in about 30 MILLION MEN who have no choice of brides.  Possibly this is an economic problem only, but not probably.  Where there are so fewer WOMEN, women do have a greater choice of men.

But a friend who once moved to ALASKA because she was so very tall, though beautiful, that she was not being asked on dates, came back to America and said, "There are men in Alaska but the problem is that Alaska is in the men..."

I suspect that  while CHINESE WOMEN can be pickier than perhaps ever before, choosing a husband isn't only about money but also CLASS and TRADITION, such as parents doing the matchmaking, as well as issues such as PHYSICAL APPEARANCE and DISABILITY, and LOCATION, factoring in.

Maybe the Professor was being practical, but the article doesn't seem to mention what he thought WOMEN might think about HAVING TWO HUSBANDS in CHINESE CULTURE.  It's true that there have been some cultures in which a woman had two or even many husbands AT THE SAME TIME, all living together or close by, but I've taken the anthropology class; most often these men are BROTHERS and basically, she does NOT have to sexually satisfy ALL OF THEM.  Instead, the genetic and economic issue means that the brothers total a smaller number of children to support though this shared wife, because the WIFE is very much stuck at home doing FEMALE SPECIFIC work.  And if you sleep with a bunch of brothers, maybe none of them are going to know for sure that they are or are not the father of a certain child.

Also, American men are IMPORTING CHINESE WOMEN AS BRIDES to live here with them and become U.S. Citizens and wealthy Chinese women are also coming right here to HAVE 2nd and 3rd children!  (I recently saw a group of them being given a tour of a garden together, with one man who spoke some English as the guide.  How rare to see a bevy of young Chinese beauties, all seven or more months pregnant, sans wedding bands, walking through the garden!)  I've previously read that Chinese men are importing South Korean women to marry.

So if you happen to be a CHINESE MAN WITHOUT ANY PROSPECTS FOR MARRIAGE (or if you happen to be Professor Xie Zoushi), may I suggest that some people will have to LEAVE CHINA to marry? As in the history of the United States, a starting point is to find Cousins here in the U.S. to sponsor you!  Further, you may have to give up on the idea of marrying another person who appears Asian!  As there is a surplus of women all over the world who want to be married and who are attracted to men outside their own race or ethnicity, this is also a possibility.

And, of course, some of you never married Chinese men, actually will prefer to remain unmarried, but have one or many Mistresses through your life time!  Just like the old Emperors!

STUDY SUGGESTS WOMEN BEING BISEXUAL IS BETTER FOR POLYGAMY

DAILY MAIL - FEMALE SEXUAL FLUIDITY REDUCES CONFLICT - MEN WITH MULTIPLE WIVES  by Cheyenne Macdonald For Dailymail.com

EXCERPT:  About the scientific opinion of Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa, Evolutionary psychologist.

The analysis revealed that women are more fluid in all of the proposed facets.
And, the study confirmed his predictions, including one which proposed that women who experience increased levels of sexual fluidity have a larger number of children, and that women who experience marriage or parenthood early in adult life also experience increased levels of sexual fluidity.

The researcher says this suggests that women’s sexual fluidity may have been evolutionarily selected as one method for facilitating polygynous marriages, in which a husband can have more than one wife.

‘Even though humans have been mildly polygynous throughout evolutionary history, polygynous marriages are often characterized by conflict and tension among co-wives,’ Kanazawa writes.

‘I propose that occasional sex among cowives may have reduced such conflict and tension, and increased their reproductive success. Female sexual fluidity may have evolved as an adaptation to facilitate it.‘

The researcher also acknowledges earlier research which explains that historically, women left their homes in order to marry, while boys stayed in their natal groups for their whole lives.

OPINION from MISSY

Don't you just LOVE it when they call all the women who are sharing a man WIVES...
I'd like to know more about this study.  For instance, did all the WOMEN who were sharing a man, live with him or even KNOW they were sharing him?  Don't you just LOVE it that they call bisexuality or POLYAMORY "fluidity?"

BLONDE by JOYCE CAROL OATES : MISTRESS MANIFESTO BOOK REVIEW

This was a book I stayed home to read over one entire weekend because I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.  So I cancelled all else, didn't even bother to cook or even bath, and was well rewarded for sticking with it.  There was a mastery of the writer's art of telling a story here that was so good that there were times reading it when I broke down in tears, or got "the chills," and scenes that stuck with me for days after I closed the last page which was nothing less than a triumph.

I know that Oates did a lot of research of her own, not just leaning on books claiming nonfiction that have been written by this actress who has captured the world's imagination, so those of you who have read a lot of Marilyn-themed books as I have would probably have that same urge to think : Finally someone has gotten it right!

This book was a finalist for the National Book Award, which means that it is literary fiction that was highly regarded by those in the know.  Like many people I was lured to read it by the cover (there have been many different cover designs) that are extremely suggestive of MARILYN MONROE.  So one thing a reader should not skip is the disclaimer at the front of the book that says that this is a work of fiction based on Marilyn Monroe, meaning that the author, JOYCE CAROL OATES is having her creative way with the Marilyn Monroe story.  And to be honest, even if you had never heard of MARILYN MONROE, you could think "Ah, the story of an actress of the late forties and 1950's in Hollywood," and you would still be moved.  Excellent!

ANY MISTRESSES YOU WANT TO RECOMMEND I COVER?

I'm interested in my reader's suggestions.  I often find articles in the news or find inspiration in films or books that I follow through on by doing some research before I elect a person to be MISTRESS (or MANTRESS) of the month.  I'm especially interested in hearing about any Men you know of who have been or are being KEPT by a woman or a man, as I think Men in this lifestyle are more IN THE CLOSET than Women.  Missy

DECLARATION FOR MISTRESSES : Authenticity

"Whatever roles I must play in this life, I bring forth authenticity, knowing myself well, and knowing when I'm being real and when I'm acting."

My meditation on MARILYN MONROE makes me think that Marilyn's growing problem was that the woman she was, with intentions of being a working and famous actress, was at odds with her way in, being a "sex goddess."  But in life many of us do play the role we are expected to play when it's not who we really are, often because we do not have a better opportunity and think of it as a means for survival, or we think of it as only temporary. But if we go on living at great odds with ourselves we feel a lot of pain and we can start to loose our sense of self, our sense of being a unique and worthy individual.

MARILYN MONROE and JOHNNY HYDE : BOOK EXCERPTS from C. DAVID HEYMANN

From the book "JOE (DiMaggio) AND MARILYN - LEGENDS IN LOVE" by C. DAVID HEYMANN

... "It can be said that without Johnny Hyde, whom she'd met at the Racquet Club in Palm Springs in 1949, there would have been no Marilyn Monroe.  More than twice her age, he fell passionately in love with her, fled his family (including a wife of long standing) and set up a household with Marilyn on North Palm Drive in Beverly Hills. Repeatedly, persistently, he asked her to marry him, but just as persistently she declined insisting she loved him but wasn't in love with him.  He never the less wooed her by being kind, talking to her about openly about his intimate life, and listening to her stories about hers...  Above all, she stayed with him because she felt he really needed her.  Then in December 1950, Hyde suffered a massive heart attack and died.  Once again a father figure had vanished into thin air.
(page 50)

"The mere mention of Johnny Hyde's name by Solotaire (Joe DiMaggio's possibly best friend), brought tears to Marilyn's eyes and concomitantly caused DiMaggio to explode in a fit of anger of the sort that was fast becoming all too familiar to Monroe.

"Do we need to discuss all of her fucking ex-lovers?" he yelled.

"This Hyde jerk sounds like just another Hollywood vulture out to get laid."

Marilyn had heard enough.  Now it was her turn to vent.  "Johnny Hyde was a lovely, warm, caring man," she said.  "He gave me more than his kindness and love.  He was the first man I'd ever known who tried to understand me.  How dare you question his integrity."

Then, with neither malice or regret, Marilyn embarked on a lengthy account of the men in her life that had played instrumental roles in her personal and professional development.  The list, from Joseph Schenk, co-founder and chairman of the board of Twentieth Century Fox, to Fred Karger, her former vocal coach and lover - seemed endless to DiMaggio, but having been properly and thoroughly chastised by Marilyn for his outburst, he sat there and listened.  "He took it like a man," George Solotaire later told his son.  "Then again," he added, "What choice did he have."  (page 51)

MARILYN's 90TH BIRTHDAY is NEXT MONTH!

ACTRESS, SEX GODDESS, and IN JUST ONE RELATIONSHIP*
MISTRESS
OF HOLLYWOOD AGENT JOHNNY HYDE
A while back I made a list of women who were not mistresses and I put Marilyn Monroe on that list.  So let me start out by explaining my error.

I've read so many books over the years about Marilyn Monroe (and people surrounding her, including the Kennedys), books based on research, interviews, speculations, theories, and interpretations, of this most fascinating woman.  I've read more books about her than almost any other celebrity, and considering that, until recently, I never saw her in a movie, that's saying something!  (I finally did watch a couple of her movies on DVD, and while I see how talented, sexy, and well she did in them,  I tend to think of them as set ups for song and dance. What they did capture was her sparkle, her allure, you could even say, her light.)

I'm perplexed by Marilyn Monroe.  I seek to understand her, while not a fan. I came to the opinion that Marilyn was, at various times, a free spirit (promiscuous), ahead of her generation when it came to sex without marriage, a woman who had many affairs and sometimes more than one lover during the same general time period, a pin up and party girl.  I also came to believe that she'd been on the casting couch and that she might have even been prostituted (or chosen to) at some point in her life. She also had other hard womanly experiences such as painful periods, endometriosis, abortions, a miscarriage, and her own emotional and mental issues aside from a unstable childhood. She had been aimed into a teenage marriage that didn't prove to be the refuge that she would spend a life trying to find in other marriages.

She posed for nude calendars for the money and admitted it.  She was on the cover of the first Playboy Magazine; that magazine's founder, Hugh Hefner, plans to be put in the vault next to hers when he dies.  She might have been bisexual, or at least experimental, but perhaps her many marriages testify that Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jeanne Baker) really wanted to be married. Her lack of success with marriage might also testify that she didn't really want to be married, as in with one person her whole life.

Marilyn came out of nowhere. How orphaned she really was is a question, but it is true that her mother spent much of her life in a mental hospital. When Marilyn was married first young, almost as a solution to Marilyn as a problem, no one, not her mother, foster parents, or far away family, could financially support her for long.  I've met many people who admire her more for that than they ever could an actress who came from somewhere.  (One gentleman I met actually broke down and sobbed when we were dining out, after I asked him which actress of his youth he loved the best.  "Marilyn, because she was an orphan like me!" he said.)

So as a married teenager with a husband away at war, she went to work in Burbank, California, in a factory, as part of the World War II effort.

She modeled.  She didn't make enough to pay the rent and keep a car and take classes she needed to develop her talent.  She worked ambitiously to be discovered and to develop that persona that wasn't Norma Jean.  One critique I read of her said something like, "Marilyn only had sex  (i.e. with men who could help her career) so she could WORK."

She may or may not have been murdered or overdosed accidently on pills, and as time goes by the idea that she had affairs with President John F. Kennedy, while he was in office, and maybe also his brother then Attorney General, Robert Kennedy, too becomes more accepted as truth.  (She is called a Mistress of the President.  Wrong.  She was just one of his many affairs.)  She was friends with stars like singer Frank Sinatra and she associated with Mobsters - as in the Mafia. She named a pet dog Maf, as in Mafia.  Her early and mysterious death helped make her an icon, someone who's image is sold and resold over and over again..  Marilyn Monroe became more famous after death than she was while she was living.

But I was wrong that Marilyn Monroe had never been a MISTRESS, a Kept Woman, and now that I know more about that relationship, I see she quit it because she just wasn't the type.

JOE (DiMaggio) AND MARILYN - LEGENDS IN LOVE by C. DAVID HEYMANN
the primary reference for this month

Of all those books I've read, it's this book I'll be excerpting from this month, a book about Marilyn and her relationship before, during, and after marriage with Joe DiMaggio, as we focus on a very early Marilyn Monroe, circa 1949-1950.  Joe was aware he was dating a woman who'd been with lots of men but he was jealous - a bad combination.  Here we find a Marilyn who was loved by her agent, Johnny Hyde, a man who wanted to marry her, and left a long time marriage for her, but she refused.  She lived with him at his home, was supported by him, and he did all he could for her career.  He believed in her. And then he died.

JOHNNY HYDE : The man who kept Marilyn was Vice President of the powerful William Morris Agency.

JOHNNY HYDE
(1895-1950)
He was so short that not-so-tall Marilyn towered over him.
Marilyn's height is also a question but I'd say 5'7.

FIND A GRAVE - Johnny Hyde - See pics!  His Find-A-Grave profile also has a picture of him dancing with Marilyn.

Marilyn Monroe, a "sex-goddess" and a more determined actress than she is often credited for, seems to have never found anything close to lasting happiness in any relationship.  Despite her unstable and impoverished upbringing, one not so unlike what many children experience today,  despite her beauty and talent and personality, she became a drug addict - to prescription pills.  In my opinion she was also the victim of psychotherapy and psychiatrists who should have lost their licenses if not gone to jail.  She suffered great pain in her 38 years, probably more than most people could bear, this is true.  Though she and Joe DiMaggio were one of the most famous odd couples ever, it is also my opinion that he may have been the only man who truly loved her - besides Johnny Hyde, though he was also obsessed, wanted to change her to suit him and, once he'd lost her, eventually, tried to be more flexible.  For she had agreed to remarry Joe, as this book presents.  Their wedding day was to be, on that fatal August 18th when she died instead.  Though he is known to have sent roses to mausoleum regularly, soon after her death, when Marilyn was there in place in her crypt and his business with the cemetery was over, he visited there for the last time.
