MIMI SPENCER'S BOOK : "101 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU DIET" IS LUSCIOUS : MUSHROOMS!

Luscious! Doesn't that word make you think of food? I was just reading this book by Mimi Spencer, an award winning UK based fashion and beauty journalist. And it was so very wise and funny! It wasn't just about food sensibility. I was about having a sense about yourself. About what works and just doesn't.

Here is one of so very many passages I'd love to excerpt!

Including the pages entitled THE DOS and DON'TS of SHOES.

The book is C 2009 and published by Rodale.
Missy

On page 117 it says: "Favor mushrooms over meat: A study at John Hopkins Weight Management Center has come to the remarkable conclusion that eating meals made of mushrooms - lasagna, chili, whatever - rather than lean ground beef results in fewer calories being consumed at each meal. Meals made with meat averaged 420 additional calories and 30 additional grams of fat per day. Another study found that if men substitute a 4 ounce portobello mushroom for a 4 ounce grilled hamburger everything they ate a burger over the course of a year, and they didn't change anything else they could have saved more than 18,000 calories and nearly 3,000 grams of fat - the equivalent of 5.3 pounds, or 30 sticks of butter. That is a heck of a lot of fat but, one has to notice, quite a lot of mushrooms too. Perhaps take a modest approach, and make an occasional swap."

ROBERT GREENE : TYPES OF ANTI-SEDUCERS

Are you a Brute, a Suffocater, Moralizer, Tightwad, Bumbler, Windbag, Reactor, Vulgarian? (Of all of these it seems to me that the Vulgarian can most change their behavior!)

pages 134-135

"Vulgarians are inattentive to the details that are so important in seduction. You can see this in their personal appearance - their clothes are tasteless by any standard - and in their actions: they do not know what it is sometimes better to control oneself and refuse to give into one's impulses. Vulgarians will blab, saying anything in public. They have no sense of timing and are rarely in harmony with your tastes. Indiscretion, is a sure sign of the Vulgarian (talking to others of your affair, for example); it may seem impulsive, but it's real source is their radical selfishness, their inability to see themselves as others see them. More than just avoiding Vulgarians, you must make yourself their opposite - tact, style, and attention to detail area all basic requirements of a seducer..."

ROBERT GREENE : THE ART OF SEDUCTION : BOOK EXERPT

page 171 Excerpt

"Life is short, and should not be wasted pursuing and seducing the wrong people. The choice of target is critical; it is the set up of the seduction and it will determine everything else that follows. The perfect victim does not have certain facial features, or the same taste in music, or similar goals in life. That is how a banal seducer chooses his or her targets. The perfect victim is the person who stirs you in a way that cannot be explained in words, whose effect on you has nothing to do with superficialities. He or she often has a quality that you yourself lack, and may even secretly envy - The Presidente, for example, has an innocence that Valmont long ago lost or never had. There should be a little bit of tension - the victim may fear you a little, even slightly dislike you. Such tension is full of erotic potential and will make the seduction much livelier. Be more creative in choosing your prey, and you will be rewarded with a more exciting seduction. Of course, it means nothing if the potential victim is not open to your influence. Test the person first..."

Penguin Books C Robert Greene and Joost Elffers, 2001.

(The use of the term victim, is, I believe, if you read the book, almost charming, but maybe it's meant to be charmingly vampirish?)

KLONDIKE KATE PDF PROFILE

A PDF FILE ON KATE! It Begins:

"The woman who was eventually dubbed the ‘Flame of the Yukon’,
‘Belle of the North’, and ‘Klondike Kate’, in Dawson City, Yukon,
was born Kathleen Eloisa Rockwell in Junction City, Oregon, in
1875 but had grown up in Spokane, Washington. Her stepfather
had stature in the community and the family lived in a large
mansion until economic failures caused tensions in the home.
Kate grew up as a bit of a tomboy and often played with boys rather
than members of her own sex. Of a rebellious nature, her parents
sent her to boarding schools and convents but the young woman
either ran away or was expelled. In the 1890's, after her mother
had divorced her husband, mother and daughter moved to New
York where Kate had an unsuccessful attempt as an entertainer."

DECLARATION FOR MISTRESSES - Secrets

"I know how to keep a secret!"

There are secrets you shouldn't keep. If someone is in danger for their life or sanity, maybe because they are being abused, that's a sick secret. The Penn State molestation revelations are an example of many people keeping sick secrets that allowed the molestations to go on, all in the name of school reputation and the pursuit of football.

However, in life there are many secrets that you keep simply out of loyalty to a friend who has confided in you and secrets you keep out of loyalty to yourself.

These days most people don't have much privacy or respect privacy like they did even 20 years ago. It's almost as if the common person has come to not know or realize that they do have and should have a private life. Strangers, or people who are not close friends seem to think that they can ask you anything and are entitled to answers.

Not everyone wants to live as if their every move was being recorded on videotape or like on a Reality TV show.

Additionally, we have forgotten to keep our own council. If your relationship must remain private and you are not up to keeping it private, this is not a relationship for you. Remember that it is not your place as a mistress to "out" your man. It is up to him to tell his wife, if and when he thinks it best. Some wives may give a phone call to let you know where they stand, but don't you call them. SIMPLY, it is NOT YOUR PLACE!

PANTAGES THEATRE : IF NOT FOR KLONDIKE KATE IT MIGHT HAVE NEVER BEEN : DOES SHE HAUNT THE THEATRE NOW?

Linking to the site! Here is the part about Klondike Kate.
"The Pantages Theater, built in 1918 by Alexander Pantages, was partially funded with financial assistance from his mistress, Kate Rockwell. Known as “Klondike Kate” and “Queen of the Yukon” she brought grace and style to the dance halls and saloons of the Pacific Northwest. She held miners spellbound with her flame dance and took their breath away when she appeared in a $1,500 French gown. Her lush ballads brought tears to their eyes and inspired a shower of gold nuggets.

Between performances she would dance with lonely miners for a dollar a dance and drink champagne with them for which she received $7.50 a bottle. “We were vendors of laughter and music to men who were starved for beauty and gaiety,” she said. “And we give good measure for all the gold the miners showered upon us.”

In the first four months she was in Dawson, Alaska, Kate received a hundred proposals of marriage, though the only man she wanted to marry was Alexander Pantages, who in the end, took her money and broke her heart. After Pantages married a woman of higher social standing, Kate sued him but never fully recovered her financial loss. She struggled for the rest of her life to make ends meet.

Rumor has it that a ghost haunts the Pantages. No one knows for sure whether it is Kate or Alexander, but one thing we do know is you'll never have a chance to solve this mystery without visiting the Historic Pantages Theater!"

KLONDIKE KATE : YUKON GOLD RUSH MISTRESS : MISTRESS OF THE MONTH

Kathleen Eloisa Rockwell = Klondike Kate

While the weather is much too hot, we think of someone really cool, Klondike Kate.
It was the Gold Rush... the 1890's... Yukon Territory.

Sometimes a mistress depended on her man to support her. Sometimes he depended on her to bail him out or give him the money to invest. Marion Davies did it when Hearst needed a loan. Maybe it takes a crisis to show that loyalty? That kind of "I believe in you" Love? Kate was instrumental in keeping her Mister in business, when he founded the Pantages Theatre!

Kathleen Eloisa Rockwell is celebrated today at Klondike Kate contests in places like Wisconsin, where ladies with some old time flash sing and imitate the dance hall Kate. As is usually the case, this mistress keeps us fascinated.
Thing about Kate is that she was apparently not so refined, maybe even rough and tumble. That was the personality and character that allowed a woman to succeed in the risky atmosphere of boom or bust.
